What did your ortho do to signal the end was near?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

What did your ortho do to signal the end was near?

#1 Post by cmclin »

I have been in treatment for about 18 mos now. This week I had impressions and xrays done. On my next regular visit the brackets will be repositioned for tweeking purposes. My impressions look great and my smile is straight. However the xrays showed the bone area has not built up enough to make him comfortable enough to do anything different for the next 6 weeks. He said the teeth would move and create gaps so everything stayed the same on this visit.

Anyone experience this at some point in your treatment? Do all orthos go through this to decide the final countdown? Or do they say "hey-looks great" and decide to take them off at will.

And what should my expectation be from here? I assume whatever repositioning needs to be done will take 6-12 weeks and then is that the end? Just curious.

my ortho just said "everything looks great. We'll peel them off at your next appointment." My treatment was around 20 months and 3 weeks.

mine put in a finishing wire in month 11 that hurt more than anything else during the last 12 months of treatment. and this last adjustment, he smiles and told me that if all goes well, we are aiming to have them off before Valentine's Day... that's if I am to be as good about keeping my appointments as before, and I wear my elastics... in other words, if I behave and my teeth cooperate.... OMG can't wait!!

I think the varies a lot from ortho to ortho...
I have to go to a different place, the wonderful day when Im going to take mine off. So he'll probably do the xrays there(thats why i have to go there i guess, that's like he's MAIN office) anyway, it would suck to go all the way over there and be so prepared to take them off, and hear: uhm no your xrays looks bad..
lol..I hope not!
so i decided when I find out ill be "taking them off", I'll only post here, and tell my parents(cause theyll have to drive me over there), nobody else. would really be hard if he said: an other 6 months..ah..

My Ortho has been telling me I'm almost done since June. When I asked what that meant he said in Fall sometime. I guess things didn't go as fast because it's the New Year and my braces are still on. At my last appointment he told me everything looks good and at my next appointment he'd tell me how much longer I need to wear them. I sure hope that means a couple of weeks rather than a couple of months. Initially he told me 18 mnths, so it's not like I've worn them longer than quoted, I just thought they'd be off early. Oh well, a few extra months will be worth it in the long run.

What my ortho did was he tweeked the 5 teeth he wasn't happy with. Six weeks later when I went back he examined my bite as normal checked those teeth and then asked me if I had any areas I wanted addressed. When I didn't he told me I would be back in 6 weeks for my molds for retainers.

My ortho looked at my teeth and basically said "They'll be coming off soon" to which I responded "How soon is SOON?" - he said "Next appointment".

I was kinda surprised as he'd never really said anything about my progress before and I had actually missed going to appointments for about three months prior.

He told me in November that they would come off but I didn't get debanded until Jan 22nd as the people who make my retainer weren't coming back from vacation until Jan 21st. I don't get my retainers until Saturday!
