Easier to Speak With?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Easier to Speak With?

#1 Post by gunter8888 »

Are Essix retainers easier to speak with?

I am about 2-3 months from being done with braces and I believe my ortho told me that I will be getting a Hawley up top and a permanent retainer on bottom. This sounds great to me except for during work day. I have had 2 Schwartz Appliances during my treatment and they are a lot like Hawleys. I have found it somewhat difficult to speak normally with the appliances in place. I like the Hawleys and from reading here they seem to last longer and hold up better. So I was wondering if it would be worth it to ask for Essix to wear just while I am at work. BTW - My job requires almost non-stop talking so speaking clearly is a big deal. Has anyone else had Hawleys for home/night time and Essix during the day?

When I first got my braces off, I was given an essix retainer. To me it was a bigger change, because of not having any where the hawleys do. It's really not that hard to get used to it, it also depends on your palate how deep it is. But yeh, Meryaten pretty much said the same thing I just did.
[/quote]not sure if that is just an ortho preference thing or what ...

I'm not so sure on that myself. When I talked to my ortho about this, she never specified that part.

Never had a problem talking with either one.

The essix is alot less bulkier feel in your mouth. More natural.

However, the hawley can be tweaked for any adjustments for wayward teeth. Although I've learned there are some things that can be done to the essix that permit changes.

You can always interchange them day and night, just be aware if he tweaks the hawley to make some changes, you'll probably need another essix.
