Three years after...

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Three years after...

#1 Post by pickleweezlel »

Hi guys, I was on this forum a few years ago, when I was 17/18 and had braces. I had them for a year and got them off exactly three years ago. My ortho gave me plastic retainers, because she was convinced that having a metal wire at the back of the teeth was really bad.

Well, we're three years further and the following has happened: My retainer broke in half because I clinch my teeth, my ortho has disappeared off the face of the earth, and my teeth have moved back to their original position. So all the touble, time and most of all money I spent was for nothing. And I still have the horrible teeth that drove me crazy in the first place.
To make matters worse I'll be working as a television-presenter soon, and my smile really needs to be ok... :-(

Does anyone know what the best way for me would be to go about this? It would be perfect for me to have braces that I can take in and out, so it doesn't interfere with my television-work...

Thanks guys,

x
Pickle

Hi !

I am still around here on the boards. You may remember me. I still know about
your case, and you stopping treatment a bit too early. So sorry to hear the results
did not last. I would now try to see some orthos and ask those specific questions.
Maybe it is possible with a removable appliance. But I think clear braces could work
too. You could start a trend. Since I have braces, I notice all the time how so many
people on television have such bad teeth. So many BV's (translated, it means very
well known Flemish Belgians) should really have a treatment.

Pickle, I´m with Clo on this one: why not show off your braces on TV?! In Finland there was this very popular weekly TV show last year. The hostess gracefully wore her braces almost as long as the show was on and I never noticed anyone even make a comment about them. I think that TV show must have been a Big Deal for many teenagers: to see a young woman ignoring her braces on TV and having fun with all those celebs! To see that braces don't automatically turn you in to Ugly Betty. Indeed, you could be a Belgian trend-setter!

Some pictures from the Maria Maria TV show: http://yle.fi/mariamaria/?id=kuvia

Only in the very last shows she finally was brace-free and gosh her smile is gorgeus!
Case: Impacted canines, crowding & crossbite.
Treatment: SARPE 2004/10/6, RPE 2004/9/28 - 2005/1/31, w-arch until 2005/11/22, impacted canines extracted 2005/5/18.
Braces on: top 2005/6/2, bottom 2005/8/30.
Braces off: 2008/6/9.
Retainers, phase one: expanding Hawley retainer 24/7, bonded retainers on top & bottom.
Retainers, phase two: Hawley on top, bonded both top & bottom, positioner for night time use.

Hi, Pickle! Nice to have you back on the boards.

I was here too when you made the tough decision to stop treatment early. So sorry to hear things have reverted back to their original positions. If Invisalign isn't an option, what about clear ceramic brackets? I remember when Tom Cruise had his braces during television interviews and you had to look really hard to notice them.

I agree with Clo and Joplin, too. If all else fails, start a trend! The most important thing is to do what you can to improve the health and longevity of your teeth.

Good luck!

Chris

Hi Pickle ! :-1

Just wanted to add, if you need help with the clenching issues at night, look into www.sleepright.com. (splintek makes it) I wished that I had found this while I was in braces, and even with my essix retainers, this nightguard is a god-send. I would have bitten through my essix retainers without them or at least poke holes in them. You can where it with regular braces too.

Good luck to you!

P.S. So nice to see us old-timers (post braces) posting. :D :-1
