Question Regarding Retainer

Hi everyone,

I apologise in advance if this question has already been answered but I've pretty much gone through all of the threads on The Naked Tooth and none of them seem to answer my question.

My braces came off on Tuesday (22nd Jan) and I'm pretty happy with my teeth given my ortho wasn't exactly the best at telling me how my treatment was going. Another thing that concerned me was my bottom teeth weren't 100% straight and he told me it didn't matter  as long as my bite was right. Anyways, the braces are off now and I love it!

Here's my concern. The people that make the retainer for my ortho have been on holidays over Christmas and didn't come back until 21st Jan. When I made my debanding appointment I figured I'd do it the day after they (the retainer making people) returned so I could get my retainer either on the same day as the debanding or the next day. Turns out I won't be getting my retainers until Saturday morning

Is it possible that my teeth will shift a lot between now and Saturday?
I am really worried that they will.

In the event that they do shift, will the retainer move them back?

Sorry for the long story but this is really bugging me.

Thanks in advance! :)

hi there

I am gonna be completly honest with you.... I had mine off and the day after I had my retainers put in and I had notice that one tooth had moved outwards.
It probably depends from case to case, you may be fine... can you have a word with your ortho ?

Thanks for replying lizzy

I spoke to his receptionist and told her to call me immediately once they come in.

Originally she was going to book me in for Friday afternoon but because I work, and they close by the time I finish, that's why she gave me the Saturday morning appointment.

They don't seem to have moved but my bite is feeling a bit weird.

Arghhhh - I hate being paranoid!

With wearing the retainer, has your tooth moved back?

hi

The retainer didnt move it back but they could have shaved a bit off the retainer to move it back if I wanted them to. Doesnt really matter for me know because my teeth shifted with my hawley retainer on and so now I have the fixed brace back on.

Dont worry, this isnt the case for everyone, I think I need a fixed retainer... currently seeking advice on this website.

Its an awful feeling isnt it, you almost think you must be imagining it.

Try not to worry or you will drive yourself mad.
Can you get a day off work maybe and go and demand an appointment ?

Lilpikachu, I replied in another thread (will you miss braces), but here goes again.

First up, don't worry about it.

I had a week between getting braces off and picking up my retainers (essix). Yeah, things shifted a bit, but once the retainers went on, it was only a matter of hours before they'd shifted back into place.

Thanks for replying both of you :D

I would demand an appointment but there is no point if the retainers are not there for me to pick up. Only one more day until I get them. In the meantime I keep clenching my teeth to make sure they're okay. Paranoid much?

That said, I do think they have shifted somewhat - more the bottom teeth though as it feels like my bottom teeth are touching my top front teeth - maybe I'm just imagining it.

Thanks for the reassurance lionfish. I think I had expectations that my retainer would be ready sooner as my sister got braces and her retainer was available for pickup that very afternoon - she wears an Essix one whereas I will be getting the Hawley one. We both went to different orthos though.

Will keep you updated on the situation :)
