Tips on how to prepare for debanding?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Tips on how to prepare for debanding?

#1 Post by braced4asmile »

I will be debanding next week and was wondering if any of you pros have any advice. I have 2 very sensitive teeth which they always seem to have trouble closing the doors on (Daemons). I am quite nervous that those teeth will squeal with pain. The techs are already drawing straws of which one gets me thanks to my sensitive teeth. The ortho is also planning on shaping a few of the teeth. Oh, the sound of the grinder!! I am planning on taking a pain pill prior to the appointment.

Any other suggestions?

Take Advil.

That's all I've got.

It went VERY quickly. I had 2 Damons resist removal and it hurt at the time, but it was, overall, forgetable.

Take 2 or 3 Advil 30 mins before your appt.

Don't forget to report back to us!!!

Hi Braced,

I was just debanded yesterday (mostly ceramics with a few metals in the back) and had a few ceramics that were very difficult to remove. Like an idiot, I forgot to take some pain drugs before I went in, so I had to deal with it.

I don't want this to sound worse than it was, so I will tell you first that I'm a big wimp and I made it through just fine and am no worse for the wear. It wasn't completely painless, but it was also for the most part, tolerable.

I had an upper lateral that was very sensitive and I thought at one point she was ripping my whole tooth out. :-(( It brought tears to my eyes and I had to take a few moments to compose myself again. But as quickly as the pain came, it also went away.

I had some lower front teeth that were also very sensitive and they put on my bonded retainer to give those teeth some extra support before removing the brackets. The ortho came to remove those brackets and between him having the "magic touch" and the support from the bonded retainer, I didn't feel a thing!

Another thing that will test your patience is when they "sand" off the remaining cement from your teeth. They constantly blow air onto your teeth while they file away that cement which also can cause sensitivity.
it's not too bad, but you do get a little zap once in awhile.

Maybe a good idea to prep would be to use toothpaste for sensitive teeth (if you're not doing so already) to "toughen them up" prior to debanding.

Good luck to you & I hope I didn't scare you!

You'll have your mouth open for awhile, so as usual drink some water before hand and maybe use a little chapstick so your lips so get dry!
Of course pain killers will help!
I also have really sensitive teeth but the whole process wasn't as bad as I imagined. A little pressure and it they were gone. I only experience real pain on removal of one molar band because it clipped the gum.
Just try to relax and think about how happy you'll be to be brace free!

Have fun and keep us updated!
