underbite after treratment?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

underbite after treratment?

#1 Post by ivy »

Hi, first post here. My son completed his ortho treatment a little less than two years ago, with good results. He just turned seventeen. Like most of our family, puberty hit him late, and he has just within the last year gone through some significant changes, like his voice finally dropping, adding several inches to his height, and so on.

Over the past few weeks we noticed his lower jaw seems to have become more prominent, and his front teeth now meet, which they never used to do. He says it does not bother him when he eats, and his retainers (which he's been wearing faithfully) still fit, but what if this continues? Will he develop an underbite? Will he require more orthodontic treatment, or worse, surgery? I might add that there's no family history of underbite whatsoever.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I'll mention it to the ortho when I go in for my next appointment (I'm doing Invisalign), but I'd like to hear from others.

hmm just thought i should reply to this. i never had an underbite as a kid but when i was in my teens, i'm guessing during the period from age 15-18, my lower jaw started to grow like crazy until i had a mild underbite.
you should really get your son to see the ortho and see what he says..

on another note, i'm regretting my choice of treatment!! Extracted two lower teeth but now i think surgery would have been better. Sigh, in a dilemma!
