Got my braces off, need to wait a week for retainers

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Got my braces off, need to wait a week for retainers

#1 Post by AlexJones »

I need to wait a week before going to pickup my retainer now!

Is my dentist a moron or what???

It's day 2 and I can notice my top front teeth shifting a tad as well as the bottom front shifting.

I've had braces for 4 years

My question is... when I get my retainers on, will they shift my teeth back into the original position since the mold they took, my teeth were straight?

Good grief! What a rude comment!

It's not uncommon for there to be a week between being debanded and getting retainers, since many orthos do prefer to take the impressions without the brackets in place, and many orthos rely on outside labs to fabricate the retainers. And for most folks who have this wait, the results are fine - as you said, the retainer is fabricated to the impressions that were made when your brackets were first removed, so will pressure the teeth to reverse any slight movement that happens in the interim.
LOL

I apologize for that comment, and after reading your post and much of the board, I see now that 7 days is not much time at all, and anything done to them in that time the retainers will fix. So I am happy as hell right now :)

My teeth look AMAZING!

I'm also on day 3 of Crest whitestrips Pro effects, and holycow... Let's just say... best 50$ I ever spent!

I got them, but they don't even feel tight.. just like.. i dunno.. I barely feel they are there, especially on the bottom.. are they tight enough? can I make them tighter myself by adjusting them with a screwdriver or something?

You didn't mention which type you were getting - sounds like the Hawley (acrylic plate with wire in front of teeth)? If you should notice any movement, it's comparitively easy for your ortho to make minor tweaks to a Hawley that can correct little discrepancies. But like I said, if he's happy, there's no reason to expect problems.
Yes, I guess they are Hawley, and all along I thought these were Essix retainers lol. They even have the little springs on the back on the lower retainer (which isnt activated right now)

Can I tighten these up a bit myself though? What would I need to do that

I got my braces off on a thursday and had to wait until monday or tuesday for my retainer. No joke, my teet hwere shifting after just two hours out of braces. I was freaking out, but its normal and once i got the retainer in, all went back to being great within hours. Your teeth will be fine. I know how you feel, but it will take a lot more than one week to cause damage
