I hate my retainer and want a bonded upper one

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

I hate my retainer and want a bonded upper one

#1 Post by QKate »

Hi,
I got my braces iff yesterday and my teeth look great.
But I have a HUGE problem with my retainer. I got a bonded one on bottom which feels fine.
My ortho was really weird about communicating about the uppers- I had thought intil they took the molds that I would have a bonded on top.
Then he said that may break ( due to my bite maybe?) and made me a plastic regular one.

I hate it. Mostly because it feels that I am sucking on a piece of plastic all the time. I have it out right now as I am eating a cookie.
But Ireally want to keep my teeth in place and even feel weird eating wihtout it.
I also have lots of boneloss so I need something stabele, and taking it in and out feels unstable.

Anyway- I am having the hardest time communicating with my ortho and his staff on this.
When I asked many times if I could get the bonded one they kept kindof yelling at me- and acting all weird.
So I just want to say- if the bonded one breaks once a yr I can deal with that, or did he mean it would break right away?

Did anyone else want the bonded one but were unable?
I totally got used to my braces and they were not that bad.
But this retainer is horrible I hate it so much!

I think what I have is a Hawley- I didn't know the name.
It is the classic one.I hate the feel of sucking on plastic!

Congrats !
eh, I mean to have finished.

A Hawley is a retainer with an acrylic plate on the palate and a wire in front of
the teeth. It is possible that indeed maybe a bonded one is better for you. But
I think that everyone who gets a dental appliance, always needs to have some
patience. Don't decide right away. A lot of members hated so very much a new
thing in their mouth in the beginning, and later on had to admit all got better
very rapidly. I would advise to try this for some weeks. The chances are high
that you soon will love your retainer because it feels comfortable, gives your
teeth good support and is removable so that you still can savor that feeling of
total freedom.
