Nearly there, but one tooth too tall?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Nearly there, but one tooth too tall?

#1 Post by sean83 »

6 weeks today I'll be de-braced, so I think I'm now entitled to post here! Not sure if anyone has covered this before but one of my lower incisors is a little "tall" and sticks up above the rest (see my www link). I was told he'd fix this on the big day, but that sounds nasty to me! Any experiences of this sort of thing?
It's all gone a bit dental...

Sean,

I have the same situation on my top teeth. At my last visit, I told my ortho I didn't like the way it looked and he said he was going to shave the tooth down to the same level as the tooth next to it on the day my braces are removed. I had no idea this is how it worked. I thought they should all be level now, but he said it was more important the teeth lined up along the gumline.

Six more weeks for me too, then we'll see how this all turns out.

That is true. Aligning the gum levels is often the goal with either polishing down the edge or buildung up the tooth depending on whether the tooth is too tall or too short.

I just finished Invisalign, and one of my top front teeth was longer than the other (due to the other being a bit chipped, and he polished (was more like griding!) them right up so they're almost even now, and look great.
