did my teeth shift between braces and retainers?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

did my teeth shift between braces and retainers?

#1 Post by fff »

Minutes after the braces came off I noticed a small gap between my front teeth. the assistant who made the molds for my retainers did not seem to know what she was doing and by the time she made a good mold my teeth had been without braces for almost 30 minutes.

That was last month.

So far I've had the retainers for 1 month and as soon as I remove them I see a gap between my front teeth. It's almost like the retainers are hardly adding pressure to the front teeth. I wonder if the problem is that the retainers I was given were made from molds of shifted teeth.

What am I supposed to do? I feel like I wasted thousands of dollars on something that did not work.

Can teeth really shift in only 30 minutes!? I'm just wondering.... because if that's the case then how do people with Invisalign get on? :?

I hope someone will be along soon to offer advice for you.

The gap between my front tooth opens in minutes. It's a small gap, a few millimeters wide, but it's there.

I'm also hoping someone will offer advice

It cant be a few millimeters, a millimeter is a LOT (10mm = 1cm)

They might shift a tiny bit but it can't be several millimeters, that would be a LOT. A hawley can correct the shift, and many times shift can be avoided totally by having a bonded placed right after you have your braces removed.

I have to wait 10 days between having a bonded removed and getting a hawley to fix some tipping and my ortho assured me that my teeth would not move significantly in 10 days.... if there is any movement it will be corrected along with the tipping.
