How long does a hawley retainer last?

#1 Post by jrm »

I've been wearing a lower hawley retainer for nearly a year now to stop shifting on my bottom teeth. There is no problem with the retainer, but I was wondering how long a retainer can last if kept in proper care.

Mine is going on 5 years with no problem.
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

I've seen them last 15+ years, but have heard that 5-10 is the norm. Just keep brushing it and if you happen to lose it, make sure you get a new one right away. I've seen so many cases where the retainer gets lost and it is not replaced and the patient relapses.
