Retainers and fillings

I wear a clear (Essix) retainer on my top teeth. I've never had cavities before, but now my deep grooves in my teeth are developing staining and cavities. I will be needing fillings.
I called my orthodontist and asked what would need to be done, and the receptionist told me that I will need a new mold done/new retainer made every time I have a filling done in my teeth. That means I'll be spending around $125 each time I have a cavity!
Does that seem right to you? Shouldn't a dentist be able to make the filling fit in the retainer or shouldn't the ortho be able to adjust the essix retainer?
I am so confused! I am not going to spend that much money each time I need a filling done on top of the filling cost!
(P.S. I need the clear retainers because it helps with grinding. So Hawley retainers are out of the question.)
Any advice would be appreciated.
