Is it normal for retainers to scrap your gums slightly?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Is it normal for retainers to scrap your gums slightly?

#1 Post by Cyborger »

So I got my braces taken off yesterday. Everything went ok except that my upper retainer hurts when it's put on or taken off. I think it's because of the gum between my two front teeth. When they came together, it caused a little line to form on my gums. My ortho suggested getting a frenectomy but I'm not sure about it. There seems to be a lot of slicing and dicing going on. Sorry if it seems like I answered my own question. I'm just guessing. The suggestion for a frenectomy was given before I got my retainer so it could just be a case of getting used to them. However the bottom retain goes on and comes off just fine.

And i have a sore on the roof of my mouth from the retainer...(Idk if its to slack and it rubs against a certain spot)

My next appointment is on the 11th of April so ill ask my ortho about it.

It hurts the gums just over the two front teeth. I have a plastic retainer btw.

It's like when I'm slipping them off they seem to press against my gums.

I have hawley retainers top and bottom.

Putting them on and off can hurt a big but once they click into place its fine if it wasn't for the lisp when speaking I wouldn't notice I had them in.

And yes taking out my lower ones always hit against my back right molars so I have a spot that is always sore.
