do teeth or your bite settle/ improve after braces?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

do teeth or your bite settle/ improve after braces?

#1 Post by Anna5 »

Hello!

I read from a few of you that the teeth/ bite still need to settle after braces, and that it is possible that your teeth are going to look better some time after debracing than on the day you were debraced. Is this true?
My ortho said the same, that after debracing my teeth will be going to settle and my bite may even get a bit better than right after debracing. Some of my upper teeth don't touch so well my lower teeth yet, my ortho said there is nothing he can do about this now, but that when my bite settles after braces nature itself might resolve this problem.

Anybody with this experience????

Excellent question. I'm wondering the same thing. Anyone know if your midline can still settle as well? Mine is almost where it needs to be while wearing elastics but then shifts a little when I take it off, but my ortho thinks everything is good to go.

My knowledge on the topic only comes from what my ortho has said.

He says that teeth will absolutely settle after getting braces removed. He said clinically any teeth movement up to 1mm (nothing more) is considered natural (don't know if I agree with it.. but that's what he told me a few days ago).

Also I mentioned to him while I wear retainers and take them off my bite changes.. He says this is perfectly normal and with time it gets better.

It's weird to tell people but 6 months after I got my braces removed my teeth actually looked better than when I first got them off.. That makes me question his judgment on when I got my braces off but the end result looks really nice so, good call on his end?

My bite absolutely got better after the braces were removed. Initially y molars didn't touch each other comfortably, but they do now. But I cannot tell if the appearance of my teeth has changed.
