Do the fillings survive???

Hi Everyone,
Well, I've about 2 years to go before I get my braces off, but I was curious to know whether any of you lucky people who are now "naked" lost any fillings when the braces were removed?
The reason I ask is that I've got fillings in EVERY tooth and I'm worried that they'll all get yanked out when my braces finally come off!!
I've read that sometimes the enamel can get taken off by accident, so will the fillings survive????
Thanks,
LUCY xxx

The glue for the brackets and bands don't stick well to the fillings. Plus they crack the glue away from the brackets, then scrape the glue off your teeth. So the likelyhood of a filling being removed with the braces is pretty low. I have fillings all over the back of my mouth and didn't have any problems when my braces came off.

Not sure how late I am on this but I'm glad I came across it. I was wondering the very same thing. I have 2 fillings on my back molars my ortho put crowns on them both to support the MARA I have. I was wondering how in the world is he going to get those crowns off (that by the way have a ton of glue or paste or whatever you want to call it) without ripping my fillings out.
See the crowns had holes at the top which is there so the ortho can have a way to pull them off when it's time and to ensure no food could get down around the teeth, he filled the holes with the cement. I can only hope that he's done this a million times and knows what he's doing.

I am worried too...
I have one second molar that is like a barrel. half of the side "walls" are still there but otherwise the tooth is full of filling material. It will be replaced by a crown later. The life span of this filling is max. 5years.
This tooth was lucky not to get root canal done but I bit worried if this toothe will join the braces and break when removing the braces.

I believe when they take the brackets off, they clip away at the cement and then pop them off. This leaves a layer of cement that they dremel down. If anything, you'll have an extremely thin layer of cement over any fillings which can then be polished off by the ortho or your dentist. Also, the molar bands come off surprisingly easy.

I hate to put a dampener on this, but I had to have 3 fillings replaced after I got my braces off, as they got pretty battered when the molar bands were taken off. Two of the teeth have had fillings in since before I was 20 (I'm now 42) so the fillings were very old.
After my braces came off, I went to see my dentist to get an idea of the work that might need doing. As I had exhausted my limit on my dental cover (due to having had jaw surgery), I asked him to prioritize the work so that I could budget for it, and he told me to have a rest until this financial year when my insurance cover restarted and to give my still numb teeth some more time to recover. So even if you do have to get some fillings replaced, there seems to be no particular urgency on it. (in my case anyway).
Btw, I got my braces off on the 2 Feb 2007, and had my 3 fillings replaced on the 5th July. Last week I had my root canal finalized (I had a temporary filling put in a tooth before my jaw surgery last August), so all the dental work is now behind me (for the time being).
Next on the agenda is my 6 monthly visit to the periodontist (in October) when I'm expecting to be told that I will need a gum graft.

I have my share of fillings in my back molars. Mine all survived which I was very happy about. I just had a dental appointment this week after getting my braces off a month ago. One tooth with a huge composite filling was my big worry but it survived. The dentist though perhaps I'd need a crown when my braces came off but turns out, at the immediate moment, I don't. I was scared to death as they removed my braces thinking I would stick my tongue around in my mouth and find filling gone!

So it seems as if it can go either way depending…. My fillings have been there since I was 6 years old and I’m 29 now so that’s a long time. Not to mention the 2 molars that have the fillings are baby teeth!
I know what you’re thinking, how in the world do I still have baby teeth. Well I do and my dentist let me know that if I loose them at this point I can consider them lost. In the past, every dentist I’ve gone to tells me that my fillings look great and that whoever did them did a wonderful job so hopefully they will survive debanding day.

Indalee,
There are a lot of us around here who have baby teeth at an "advanced age". I had one pulled just before my braces went on - at age 53.
my ortho used a drill

for me debanding was very easy, painfree.
they used some kind of drill that cut one side of the band and it simply came lose.

I had some fillings on the sides of 2 of my molars, the bands went right over them so I wasn't suprised that I lost them when I was debanded.
They are real sensitive to cold and the earliest my dentist could get me in to redo them won't be for almost 3 weeks

I know I'm chiming in a little late here, but I had my braces removed last Friday and left with all my fillings!! I have fillings in almost every back tooth (big ones), and I was really concerned about the molar bands coming off, but it was no big deal!!

Wow....I was wondering if my crown would be coming off with my one molar band too! It will need to be re-done anyhow, but the thought of it coming off on debanding just made me sad. Good toknow that it should stay on!

I have 3 fillings in my front teeth, and one cavety was pretty deep. And I had problems with sensetivety(espeically there), so I went to the dentist and had to have one filling changed. It was no big deal, and they managed to do it without doing anything to the braces... Allthough the anasteticha(local), was quite painfull...Because there are so many nerves where he(dentist) had to work. But it was fine really. They said it had to do with the braces or something. I think they didn't manage to fix it properly either when my teeth were closer/more crowded(before braces), and it was quite deep, so that might had have to do something about it anyway(even if I did not have braces). But if you experience anything unusual, I'd let my orthodontist/dentist know...By the way: You are much more likely to get caveties when you have braces, so take extra good care of them.. Don't drink juice(without food), or soda, and cut down on sweet, and anything with a low Ph...I should practice what I preach, but well. That's the advice they usually give....
Good luck with your treatment!
