Comfort Covers...Reviewed...

#16 Post by **shinyhappybraceface** »

I purchased two sets of ComfortCovers from Dentakit so I thought I'd give my feedback on them...

I bought them, not because of a musical instrument, etc., but because I have a new boyfriend. I thought this product might help...

They are made of strong, clear plastic. They're flexible enough to go over the top of your braces - I put them on by starting at the middle, as the directions say, and moving toward the back. I needed to trim mine down to fit properly. I found that I needed to hold the top and bottom sections apart as they don't really slide over the brackets.

I got the top one on without much problem although, having tried this on my second day in braces, my teeth hurt terribly when I was done struggling to get the top one on.

The bottom one was out of the question at this point in my treatment. I'm afraid that there was too much crooked crowding for me to get the cover over the brackets. It just kept popping off as soon as I got a section to snap on. :(

I'll say that the claim that they are for "'braces newbies' who want a little extra help in those first uncomfortable weeks of orthodontic treatment" is probably accurate if your teeth aren't terribly crooked, but otherwise, you might have to wait to get the best out of this product.

Hope this helps! :D
The future is no place to place your better days. ~DMB

Yes, I've heard that if your teeth are very crooked (at the beginning of treatment), they might not stay in place as well as when they are a bit straighter. Perhaps I should add some wording to that effect to the product description. I don't want to mislead people.

We'll also be carrying a "lip protector" very soon which fits onto the wires and covers the brackets from the front (doesn't wrap around them), which may work better for some people. However, if your teeth/brackets are really really crooked, that might be difficult as well. In those cases, wax might be the best bet. It's hard to say. Some people have success with these types of products and some people don't. It's a very individual thing.

Any other suggestions for this problem :?: :?:
I have the exact same problem. For a long time, I would end up causing a cut on my lips from pulling. When you first wake up, try blowing air through your mouth with it closed...like puffing your cheeks. That has really helped me!

This thread is old, I realize! I just wanted to give my two cents worth on the "Comfort Covers" that are on the DentaKit site. OMG WHAT A LIFE SAVER!!!!! My ortho decided to put on the bonded brackets and leave me without an archwire for a week. (I theorize that I must have ticked her off!!! ) These things are W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L! So if you find yourself in a similar situation, get some. Overnight them, heck....buy them a window seat if you have to. They work!

Just a question about the comfort covers... Does anyone know how long they last?

I would suppose atleast 6 months. They certainly are not a disposable item. They are made of vinyl that is fairly thick.

If you are getting your braces soon, get some. They will be a relief for your lips at the end of the day.

I just got some of these and would like to comment on them. Personally I didn't like the Comfort covers at all. I bought them thinking my mouth would be pretty sore after a few days and would need a break. I also ordered a pair for my son since we were both recently braced.

Both of us found that they were difficult to snap on, PLUS the fact that our teeth were very sore, made it next to impossible to put them on without great pain. We both gave up and decided to coat our teeth with the braze eze instead. So basically I spent $15.99 for nothing.......I don't see us using these ever again.

Did you try running them under warm to hot water to soften them? They work best when trimmed down a bit for length. I also cut out little pieces of the side chanels to make room for the elastic hooks.

I'm sorry that your experience so far has been poor, but I can assure you that once on, the feeling of the smooth plastic vs the rough feeling of (especially self ligating) brackets is worth it. My braces have been on a month, I still put these on at night to give all of the little sores a break.

Does anyone else have an opinion on these, good or bad?

Hey you know what? I decided to try your advice and run them under hot water. My mouth is really sore today and I swear I had wax everywhere. I put these on and ahh.....what a relief! I think Lynn should post this tip on the Archwire site with this product. It made it so much easier to get them on when they were warmed up, and I think it is a great suggestion for people like me who would've never have thought to do this.

My mouth truly thanks you! and I can truly say that I will be using these much more now! Thanks so much!

I am very happy this worked for you!!!! I knew that once you had them on, you would be delighted! I hate having to take them off in the morning....back to scratchy!

Lynn tends to read a great deal if not all of the posts, so I am certain she will see our suggestion.

I hope all goes well for the two of you!

Thats sorta funny....as I got up this morning I was thinking. Hmmm....I wonder if I can wear these all day, if anyone would notice. I decided against it, but man my mouth felt so much better with them on, and I definitely slept better as I wasn't scraping my lips on the braces while I slept.

Again....thanks for the suggestion, these were like a dream come true for me yesterday! Warming them makes a big difference! Especially on sore teeth!
