Wow! Am I reading this right? You were in braces less than 1 year?

Good for you and glad you love the result.

I went in today for my first post-debonding check up. I was expecting to get my lower bonded lingual retainer, but alas, my lowers are still not perfect.

I did get my x-rays and I was terrified when I saw them!!!

It looks like that lower central incisor's root is GONE!

Image

Anyone else think I should worry? I didn't see the pix until I got home, is this something I should point out??? There's nothing they can do about it, I suppose....

I go back in 4 weeks to check my lower's alignment and hopefully set up the retainer bonding appointment.

Your teeth look fantastic! Congratulations on finishing!

As to your root - definitely bring it up with your ortho and/or dentist. That's what the roots look like on all of my front lowers, and it's actually why I got braces - to fix my bite so that my uppers aren't banging on my lowers every time I bite down. I don't think there's anything they can do to get the root to grow back, but at least for me, now that my teeth don't slam into each other, the roots won't deteriorate any further and I'll be fine (knock wood). Maybe you're in the same situation? Let us know what your ortho says! And congrats again - I especially love the retainer!

My husband reminded me that with the pan-x ray, there is a slight visual obstruction in that exact place caused by the little thingy (technical term LOL) that you bite on...I am hoping that's the problem!!

Also, on the not quite done front, I got my lower bio-form retainer dimpled (like invisalign!) so that it would move my lower teeth even more. Boy did they hurt this morning when I took that retainer out!!! This process is very interresting!

To answer your question, Denise, the ortho didn't look at the x-rays while I was there. The assistant took the pictures and only varified that they came out clear...no "reading" of them took place while I was there. :?

I will certainly ask at my next appointment.

It looks like, when looking at those roots, that they kinda "stop", then there is some
darker area and then they seem to appear again but in a much lighter contrast.
I see this continuation on your left incisor for example, being almost of an equal
length of what you see above this darker area. I made the contrast of your pic some
higher and then one can see it better. Maybe you are right about this bite-on-thingy.
You may very well have there a clever husband ...

I got an answer to my root question (see above).

I forgot to ask my ortho when I was there last week. funny how important this was back in March and how I completely forgot about it until today.

My daughter (12) was at her ortho appointment and I was sitting downstairs on their couch knitting a sock (yes....I knit socks). Then my daughter came down with the assistant and they said they needed to check on an x-ray before we left.

The doc came downstairs with her pan-x-ray and showed me how her lower roots seemed to be too small (looked EXACTLY like mine). I immediately said, "OH MY GOSH! Mine looked like that, too." He then showed me the little x-ray they took today and her roots are VERY long. I asked him what was the deal and he said that the pan-x-ray doesn't always show those roots well, something goofy about the machine that is fairly normal in a lot of them.

Just another example of too much information to an under-educated patient!

Now you (and I) know!!

Hi Jennielee

Glad the root problem turned out not to be a problem.

I just wanted to say that your teeth look so fantastic now you must be so delighted.

Congratulations again.

By the way I used to knit a lot and recently (as part of my attempt to kick smoking, which I sadly failed at) I knitted some baby bootees for a colleague's baby.

Regards
Joney
