My braces story! 26 - GOT BRACED TODAY! *with pics*

#1 Post by lauren »

Hi everyone!

I have a blog (listed in my signature) but it has pictures of me on it, so I'll just post some of the text here and you all can check out the pics if you care. I'll likely update it more than I update here, though. :)

Hi! I'm Lauren, a 26-year-old professional photographer in the Washington, DC area. On top of my wedding and portrait photography work, most of my money comes from working full-time in a position for a nonprofit association.

The story of my teeth seems somewhat simple. I have a genetic defect of sorts that has left me with one too few teeth on the top and one too many on the bottom.

These are the teeth that are affected:

Image

So, what does this mean for me? It means that neither my top nor my bottom teeth line up in the center. This is more visible on my top teeth, which only has one "front tooth". Pictures on my blog.

I also have an open bite, meaning only my back two teeth touch. When I bite down, none of the rest of my teeth touch. This isn't noticeable in pictures, as it appears generally that my teeth touch - but they don't.

Over time, this has gotten worse, most recently lending itself to a gap between my two front teeth that began quickly opening last September and by December was quite large. it's hard to tell from straight on, but I could have fit a nickel between the two teeth.

In December, I visited the dentist for the first time in over 10 years and had the teeth bonded together, the gap closed, 8 fillings, one almost-root canal, and a chip I've had since I was 8 closed.

Last week, due to pressure and pain coming from one of my wisdom teeth on the bottom (it's crowded down there! The ones on top, due to the extra space, came in with no problem), I had all of my wisdom teeth removed. I immediately began feeling shifting in my teeth.

After encouragement from my dentist and years of feeling unhappy smiling in pictures, I'm finally getting braces!

Knowing that I was finally ready to look into braces was half the battle for me. I've been avoiding it for years. In college, I refused to smile in pictures with my teeth. Refused. Literally, there's not a single picture of me between the ages of probably 12 and 22 with teeth in the picture.

Eventually, I met Brian, my now husband. On New Years Eve, December 31 2005, my friend Sarah encouraged me to smile with my teeth for pictures. "You have to prepare for your wedding! You don't want to look unhappy in your wedding pictures!", she said. So, I obliged, and got over that huge mental block.

However, the teeth stayed bad, and I continued to only post "at a distance" and "good angle" photos of myself online for friends to see. I view my teeth as my worst physical flaw, and one that really gets to me. I never realized how lucky I was that my worst physical flaw is one that is so (relatively) easy to fix - with braces!

Right before having my wisdom teeth removed, my husband mentioned that if I wanted, I could have an orthodontist consult. I had been talking about it on and off for a year and had obsessively researched, but had never actually had a consult.

I wanted invisilign, and if not, then lingual.

I had a consultation with Dr. Neal Kravitz, who I chose despite him being 45 minutes from my house, because he is a specialist in adult braces and cares about the aesthetics of adult orthodontics, having been an adult in braces himself while he was still a dental GP. My decision to go with him was solidified when I found out he's one of the top lingual braces providers in the country, VERY well respected among his peers, and teaches orthodontics method and research across the country.
His website: http://www.kravitzorthodontics.com/

I also liked his bedside manner and the fact that he is always reachable and answers every question with patience.

My consult was great. He went over every single aspect of my teeth after taking a number of pictures, and went over my options. It looked like this:

My 1st choice: Invisilign: Not an option due to my open bite and compicated extra/missing teeth situation.

My 2nd choice: Linguals: An option on the top; not on the bottom (fine with me as I don't smile with my bottom teeth). $8500 for the combo. 18-20 months treatment.

My 3rd choice: Ceramic: My best option, as it'd be easier for my ortho to fit a fake tooth "flapper" on the top until I can get a permanent fake there. $6500

My 4th choice: Metal: like ceramic, an option, but I didn't want these due to their high visibility.

I was pretty bummed not to be able to get Invisilign but really battled between the Linguals and the Ceramic. The price difference meant a lot to me and some linguals provide longer lasting lisping effects than "regular" front braces. But, at my age, and as I'm constantlyl meeting with clients and their parents regarding hiring me for their wedding photography, I was concerned with looking like a "12 year old" or people judging me.

In the long run, though, my doctor made it easy on me. He promised that if the ceramics bothered me a ton, I could always "upgrade" to the linguals and he'd eat the cost of the ceramics. This helped my decision a lot - because I know myself, and likely I'll be fine with the ceramics. The mental decision to get braces is the hardest part for me. Plus, the easier treatment and financial benefits won me over.

So, I'm paying $6500 on a payment plan over the next 20 months.

I'd imagine I'll start some time in the next few weeks, but first we're waiting to hear if my husband gets offered a new job - wish him good luck!

My bite!

#2 Post by lauren »

Used the scanner at work to scan some of the pics taken by my orthodontist on Saturday. This should give you an idea of my bite and what I am working with! You can see how off-center I am and how skewed my midline is.

Hi Lauren,

Congrats on deciding to get braced! :D I can't say I've ever heard of missing/extra teeth before. That's pretty rare! I checked out your blog and, no, it's not noticable in those pictures but, from the scanned pics from your ortho, I see it now. Just curious...will you be getting an implant for the missing tooth on the top? and will they be extracting the extra one on the bottom?

Sending good vibes for you husband! :D ~~~~~~~~~
Keep smilin'! :)

Hi Jenny! Thanks.

I of course am my own worst critic and I notice the horrible midline issues constantly.

They'll make space for an implant up top; I'll have a "flipper" in the mean time attached to a retainer of sorts so that it appears that I have a tooth there. I am not sure how much an implant costs even! :(

They will put braces on the bottom BEFORE extracting my tooth, apparently. Their goal i guess is to have the gap there as little time as possible. But yes, they're extracting! Rather than having an implant up top I asked if they could just take out my other little top tooth, lol, and just have 2 missing teeth up top. Unfortunatley my arch would then be too small, which makes sense, I guess. ;)

Hey Lauren! Thanks for visiting my braces story. I agree that it was hard to even notice anything wrong with your teeth in those pictures on your blog. Sounds like you have a unique teeth situation going on, but you'll be thrilled with the results I'm sure once all is said and done. Post lots of pics. I'll try to keep up with your progress. I'm on here a lot these days since none of my friends IRL have had braces for years and don't really care to talk about them.

I'll definitely post lots of pics! I'm a cam whore. :)

I usually live on Livejournal but apparently there aren't any active braces communities on there so I'm here for the count! :)

Lauren, your teeth look beautiful and you will be happy with whatever type of ceramic brace that you get. I have a similar problem with my maxillary midline being shifted to one side; no one seems to notice but it is really noticeable to me. I have to say that, after going through a year and a half of invisalign, braces were quite a shock. I thought everyone would comment and notice my teeth. It took me about a week to realize that not that many people notice and if they do, they don't care and will only have positive things to say. So, I think the hardest part of the whole procedure is just getting over the self confidence/ self image issue that comes along with the braces; it won't take long to realize that it doesn't make people think any differently of you. You will love the changes that you will see with the ceramic braces and should feel good about your choice. I found out through experience that invisalign cannot correct more complex issues like yours and mine, and I have heard that linguals are also a little less consistent in their results. Good luck on your braces adventure, I hope everything goes well!

Thank you so much for stopping by! :) I was really moved by your story not just because of your feeling that the ceramics are visible but because it made me not be too upset that I couldn't get invisilign - it sucks that you're having to go through braces after all of that! I'm happy to just get them - and get them off. Especially because I want to move out of hte area in December of 2010 and don't want to switch orthodontists!

I'm so super nervous!

I finally set my b-day!

Schedule:
Yesterday: got my hair cut and dyed light brown (I'm a natural dirty blonde but I highlight it, but I wanted something more low maintenance)
Tuesday: I get my spacers!
Wednesday: 2 year wedding anniversary and surprise location dinner :)
Saturday: anniversary date, not sure where, it's a surprise!
Next monday: B-day!

I'm so nervous and afraid... I hope it works out okay. :(

OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Well, today is my 2nd wedding anniversary! Yay!

The down side is, yesterday I got SPACERS. I'd heard they weren't fun, but my orthodontist promised I'd be okay and it wouldn't be a huge deal. "I hope so", I said, "because I don't want to have to have a steak smoothie for my anniversary dinner."

I got them put in yesterday - and OMG THE PAIN. First it just felt like a big thing stuck between my teeth, but now it's HORRIBLE. It got worse quickly last night to the point that I took a Vicodin and 800mg Advil to be able to sleep. My teeth all feel SO SORE - especially the ones in the front, surprisingly, as the gapping action in the back is shoving pressure toward the middle.

This is made worse by the fact that a)I have an extra tooth on the bottom so it's already crowded down there and b)my top front teeth are attached by concrete and a wire in the back so they can't move separately. I feel like they're going to crack.

I did eat last night, though. The chewing pain hurts but almost in a good way - like it's circulating blood flow or something. It's SO PAINFUL but seems helpful. Sort of like when someone gives you a deep tissue massage on a pinched nerve. You hate it but know it'll be better..

I'm convinced these are nothing but a torture device designed to make braces seem like the least painful thing ever. Because right now I'm BEGGING for brace day, so that these suckers come off.

Five more days to braces!

For those who don't know - spacers are put on to wedge space around your molars enough to put a metal band around them on brace day. They don't get regular brackets like your front teeth. The spacers will be on until brace day (unless I decide to take them off with pliers - which is looking more and more attractive as an option!)

First, congrats on your anniversary! I forget what the traditional 2-year gift is. Do you guys pay any attention to that? :) I can't wait to find out where your secret surprise weekend away was. Do you have any hints at all?

I'm so sorry your spacers hurt! You're right about the chewing; it is increasing the blood flow to the area which is good. The first day or two I had braces, I got baby teething rings and threw them in the fridge for a bit. The coolness combined with the chewing was divine. You might want to try the same with a teething ring or even with a damp washcloth.

The picture of your lower arch is really interesting! It looks like you Photoshopped the hands in there. Cool effect.

I hope you feel better soon. On day 2 and 3, I was convinced that I'd never stop feeling sore in my mouth, but each of us in our own time do return to normal and even start to see movement. You're well on your way!

Hi :) The traditional 2 year gift is cotton! Now that I think about it, no, I didn't get him anything like that - darn! Now I need to run to the store after work. :) Can't break tradition after only 2 years!

I did find out where the trip was - it was a road trip to Ocean City, MD to go to the beach for the weekend. I found out because my stupid mother in law wrote us a letter with cash in it that said "here's money for your anniversary trip to ocean city!". She knew it was supposed to be a surprise. I'm not sure what she was thinking, but I'm the one who opened it (addressed to both of us) and Brian wasn't even home :( We're both really upset. We actually ended up cancelling the Ocean City trip and deciding on staying here in DC and renting a hotel for the weekend, going to a super nice dinner, and to see a show at The Improv and seeing the zoo and the museums (which we never do cause we're so used to the area that we're over it!).

Tonight's dinner at Ruth's Chris - we'll see how eating works!

And, I didn't photoshop in the hands - I had my macro lens on my camera and it just only focused the front, lol.

Hi Lauren,

First off, sorry to hear the spacers are causing you pain. I didn't have spacers so I can't say I know how you feel but I've heard they're worse then the initial discomfort of braces. If you can get through spacers, braces will be a breeze!

Congrats on your 2 year anniversary! :-)o That's too bad about the surprise getting spoiled but I'm sure you'll enjoy your other plans. :D I never followed tradition when it came to buying gifts for my yearly anniversary. My husband always just wants some sort of new tool! I had no idea 2 years was cotton...hmmmm, what in the heck would you buy? You'll have to let me know what you buy  .
Keep smilin'! :)

Sorry to hear that you are in so much pain Lauren! That first night and the second day were the worst of it for me (I think I mentioned this in your anniversary thread), so hopefully your pain goes away quickly too. Enjoy your 2nd anniversary. My 3rd is coming up in a few weeks, good times! My hubby is a Brian too. Sorry your surpise got ruined, but you'll have a great time regardless.

Lauren! I'm so glad that you replied to my story. I'm excited to follow yours as well, especially with all our similarities (another one I found: OBAMA!).

And UGH, I definitely know what you mean about the spacers. I want to rip mine out RIGHT NOW.

Can't wait to see pictures when you get braced!

Now, a question for the photographer side of you: Canon or Nikon?
