Even though I have one less tooth than most people and have had all my wisdom teeth extracted years ago, my teeth are too crowded. Despite what my family may, I do NOT have a big mouth
So at the age of 45 I finally got the courage to go to the orthodontist. I had 4 bicuspids extracted - no pain except from the novocaine. I was awake for the whole thing.
Braced on October 1. They did brackets on the molars. That night 2 of the brackets on ceramic crowns popped off, so the next day they put in spacers next to the crowns and I go back next week to get them banded.
Here are a few pictures. Since I am missing one upper incisor, the canine on that side is pointed. Also, the teeth below it are terribly crooked. One of my front upper teeth sticks out way too far and has bothered me cosmetically since I was a teen.
Here it is Saturday evening and I just had another bracket pop up. It was on a crown on the other side of my mouth. I knew it was loose this morning. The molars on the right side still hurt when I try to chew anything.
Today is kinda weird - after I bite down, the teeth on the upper left feel "tight". The feeling goes away quickly. There is less pain when chewing now.
Since I work from home a lot, today was my first day back in the office with my braces. I'm not real close to my co-workers so I had not told them about the braces. One of the men noticed and said "WHY???" as if I had just chopped off a finger.
Why? Because my teeth are crowded and crooked and I'm tired of it!
Another of the men said that I sound like I had been drinking at lunch. lol
Today I had to go back to get bands put on a few molars that have crowns on them. It was a little uncomfortable but not bad.
My biggest problem is what to do with my upper lip while I talk LOL. It seems to get stuck on the top of the wire and that feels weird. Probably doesn't look as bad as it feels.
Hi Pitterpat, dont worry about how many teeth you do (or dont) have. I worried about this endlessly but you shouldnt. I am a woman of 6 feet 2, so am a pretty large framed lady, but all my teeth dont fit in my mouth! I had my upper canines extracted as a child and to have my ortho treatment now (aged 47) I had to have another 2 big molars extracted on top and premolars from the bottom as i was still crowded. Thus, I only have 24 teeth in total, which I think is about what you have. Halfway through my treatment my gaps are closing nicely and things are looking pretty good. I had a sticky out front incisor like you and also triangular shaped arches like you. I now have curves and you will too! and your teeth are going to look just great.
I had the people ask me 'and you are doing this why exactly?' Just tell them 'because I want to and I can!' Some people just dont get it, they would prefer to spend the money on a car etc. I also have had speech problems and developed a lisp a couple of months ago but its now fine as my tongue has got used to less room! I also lost a bracket last week and I am still not sure I didnt eat it!!!
Back to the office today because the lig popped off one of the brackets and the wire popped out. Glad the office is near where I live and that I work from home a lot. This particular bracket also has a bumper on top to keep me from biting down it. This is actuallly the third bumper they have put on it! Yikes. I swear I am not trying to destroy it.
One advantage of getting braces at an "advanced" age is that I stand out among the other patients. Even though it is a busy office, they know me at sight already.
Hello Piterpat! I'm 41 and will be getting braces on 11/4. I'm having two wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow and then my two eye teeth pulled 10/31!
I can't beleive someone asked you why! This is such a personal decision and we shouldn't have to explain. I feel like that is the response I've been getting when I tell people I'm getting braces. What do they think like is over now that we're a lttle older??
Sorry...just had to vent.
Looking forward to seeing your progress. I will post pix when I have some.
