Sandy's Story

#1 Post by slharding »

I've been creeping around the AW board for a bit now, since I started this little adventure. I figured it was time to share my story as it started and as it continues!

My brace story started when I was sixteen. I had this one baby tooth that just wouldn't fall out, and the adult tooth started growing in above it. Well, at 16, I was certainly NOT going to have braces, thank-you-very-much!

Fast forward 6 years later...

The darn tooth fell out, leaving me a lovely gap (incisor?). I made an appointment at an ortho who I was told did free consults. Due to working over the summer, I ended up cancelling my June 08 appointment in favour of a September one. My appointment came, and I said yes, brace me up! A few months of records appointments, wisdom teeth and 2 more extractions later and finally, 17 Dec 08, my early Christmas present to myself arrived - self-ligating front 6 ceramics on top and metal throughout the rest.

Any hints on what to do with pictures? How can I put some up? Help would be appreciated :)

So, lacking any 'before' pictures, I was planning on putting up some day 1 pictures. Alas, that will be later. Getting the brackets put on was so little hassle, it took only about 35 minutes. My ortho basically puts them into a mouth guard type thing and puts that onto my teeth. Pain and hassle free method compared to what I watched on Youtube prior to going! I'm lucky enough to be stuck with these little bumper things on the back of my front teeth which prevent me from biting down at all on my back teeth. Yuck. Best part? My wonky incisor came down in less than two weeks and my teeth looked awesome!

8 weeks later, this morning, I went for my first adjustment. No pain at all, though I can feel some dull achy pain now, 5 hours later. They switched from a nice thin wire to this seemingly monstrous square wire which (since I asked) fits better into my self-ligating brackets. They also wired my last two teeth on the top, so I've got a bit of a pokey wire on one side. My front 8 teeth or so are all wired together in a fun windy pattern to "keep them from moving".

Worst news of today - the darn bumper things aren't coming off for awhile still. I'm most upset since eating salad is a huge pain, and it's my favourite!!

Welcome, Sandy! Hey, your braces went on one day before mine did! Pretty neat. :D
It's great to hear about all the movement you've experienced in these two months. Hopefully you'll only have to wear those awful bumpers for a short time longer and then can get back to eating salad!

As far as photos: You can upload them to somewhere like tinypic and then just post them here using that "Img" button at the top of the post/reply field. Just click "Img", paste the url to the photo, and then click the "Img" button again to close the tag. I hope that helps!

Christmas dinner was hard! Luckily I could eat solid food by then, but I did a pre-apology to my grandfather sitting across from me - I couldn't chew with my mouth closed!
