PinkPixie1588's Quest for Straight Teeth

#1 Post by pinkpixie1588 »

Hi All!

I've been lurking around in here for about the past month. I've probably read hundreds of threads and a lot of your personal braces stories. I was really inspired by everyone's stories and seeing the progress really made me feel confident that I was making the right decision in getting braces. I'm hoping I might be able to give someone that same extra push!

So, here goes:

I'm 20 years old. I'm from Vermont, originally, but I'm about to finish my junior year in college in Rhode Island. I always wanted to have perfectly straight teeth, and as I got older I became much more aware of my crowded lower teeth. I remember telling my dentist about it and he told me that while he did see mild crowding, it wasn't something he would refer someone to the orthodontist over and that it would not be covered under insurance as it was strictly "cosmetic". That's where there's a long pause in my story. I spent the next 8 years or so getting a little twinge in my gut every time I saw someone with a perfect smile, wishing I could be one of them.

When I was 19, I went to a cosmetic dentist. One of my new obsessions was the fact that my upper laterals were quite a bit undersized (both width-wise, and length-wise). It made my whole smile seem off proportionally, and I was really self-conscious about it. Otherwise, I was pretty happy with my teeth. When I expressed this to the cosmetic dentist, however, he told me that there wasn't anything he could do (by way of veneers or bonding) on one of the sides because one of my bottom front teeth was basically rotated so it was in the way. He suggested I see an orthodontist.

But, I was leaving for France for 5 months (study abroad), so that was going to have to wait. Finally, after I got back and settled in, I made some phone calls to get referrals from local dentists on which orthodontists they preferred (this wasn't my area, remember). I made a consultation, went in, and got a great vibe from the office. It was clean, warm, the staff was great. It's a very small practice, one orthodontist and his assistant/receptionist. He answered my millions of questions and we scheduled another day for molds/xrays. A few weeks later, I was going in for the review of my treatment plan. As it turns out, I have the crowding on the bottom teeth and my laterals are undersized, but my biggest problem from a functional standpoint is my 50% overbite (turns out my first dentist was wrong, it wasn't strictly cosmetic). The orthodontist is going to fix that, and collaborate with the cosmetic dentist to decide how much space he is going to make so the laterals can be built up later.

This was a tough decision for me because 1) I have no insurance coverage for dental, let alone orthodontics. 2) My parents will not be contributing, I'm on my own financially (including college tuition). 3) By normal standards, aesthetically, my teeth aren't that bad. I've seen a lot worse. So spending so much time, money, and emotional stress on this was a hard choice to make. All I can say is I want to keep my teeth for as long as possible and the crowding and things I don't like will only continue to get worse with age if I don't fix it now. This next year and a half might be a bummer, but I'm sure I wont look back and regret having done it.

Today, April 30, 2009, I officially had the top braces put on. They're clear (Radiance) brackets. I went with the pearl ligs instead of clear or white; the smoke seemed a little too dark, though. He was actually nice enough to put one on of clear, one of white, one of smoke, and one of pearl so I could see and decide which I preferred. If it turns out they stain too much, I'll change to smoke, but I don't anticipate it being a problem. I don't smoke, drink coffee or teas, or eat anything like curry or mustard. Again, we'll see.

As for the bottom braces, he's anticipating 4-5 months until he can put those on, because he needs to wait until there is room to put on the bottoms so that they don't scrape against the back of the top teeth (due to the overbite). Those will be metal. Treatment time, altogether, is estimated at 18 months--total fee of $5280, including consulation, xrays and molds, braces (even if it ends up taking longer than planned), and retainers. I'm hoping it goes more quickly than that, which he said it may, because apparently smaller/more delicate bone structure tends to be less stubborn in moving, etc.

So, I just had some tuna on bread for lunch and have yet to feel any pain. I feel like my lip is a little puffed out on top but my orth said that will begin to correct itself. I'm going to post pictures very soon, but I just wanted to get this all written out just in case I begin to feel a lot of pain soon, and don't feel like typing a bunch--this way I only have to add pictures.

Thanks for reading!! I'll keep you posted on my progress :)

Congrats! You're on your way to a straight smile! Seems like it took a while to get there. 18 months isn't too bad, hopefully it'll be quicker though! Can't wait to see some pictures!

Congrats on taking the journey with us. Keep us posted on how things are going. This is a great site to share your story, vent when needed, and ask questions. Water and wax will be your best friend. Stay hydrated and things will not scrape as bad and use the wax when needed it helps tons!

Ok. Finally got pics. I got the first ones from my orthodontist so those are a lot better quality than the one I have of the braces on.

As far as pain goes, I didn't think it was bad until I was eating oatmeal and bit (gently) into the little fruit piece. OMG was that bad. I haven't chewed anything since and the pain when I'm not biting together is not bad at all. Very dull. This is great news because I normally do NOT tolerate pain well.

Treatment's going to be around 18 months, but the bottoms aren't going on for another 4-5 or so.

Welcome and congrats on getting braces. Your teeth are really white :) You already have nice teeth and they are going to look so amazing when your braces are finished!

Thanks for the support, everyone! It's so addictive reading everyone's stories and seeing the progress. I should be prepping for finals and instead I find myself saying, ok, I'll just read one more...

Actually, I've never been skiing (shocking, I know!). I guess it's one of those things where, growing up, I always knew it was an option, but I never got around to trying it. It's a pretty expensive hobby..too much so for me. It is still on my list of things to do eventually, though!

As for changes so far, I'm about 4 days in, today I managed to half-chew some watermelon (a good transition food, I think...you can smoosh most of it on the roof of your mouth (if it's ripe) and then gently chew the rest with your back teeth (which in my case, hurt a lot less than the front). Other than that, I've been eating a diet of ice cream, yogurt, oatmeal, and jell-o. I know that chewing is supposed to make the pain subside more quickly, but I'd much rather wait it out and be in dull pain for a few weeks than sharp pain everytime I force myself to chew for the first few days.

As far as the pain goes, I haven't had any sores or pain in my lips. Not really sure why. Maybe because I don't have hooks or anything? I'm glad though. I can tolerate dull achy pain a lot better than the sharp pain that comes with cankersores and such. Something to be grateful for..

I'm still pretty self-conscious around people. I feel like I'm now "braces girl". It's a little awkward. I'm sure it's at least 80% my own insecurity and they aren't thinking much of it, but I can't help feeling that way. I'm sure I'll get over it eventually, but it's definitely going to be a transition. I wasn't one of those people who absolutely HATED their teeth to begin with, so I was always smiling while talking, etc. Now I feel like having braces makes me want to keep my mouth closed so that's not the focal point of my face. I'm just trying to remind myself that I'm doing this because it will be beneficial in the long run, not for the present aesthetics.

Also, a little exciting news, I can feel things shifting around a bit. I can't physically feel the movement, but when I ran my tongue across the back of my teeth, there was one tooth that was tilted inward that is no longer doing that (or at least less so). I dont think it's the sort of thing that will show in a picture, but when you're used to running your tongue along your teeth for so long and feeling a certain pattern, any small change is noticeable. Yay!!! :) :) :)

Your teeth look nice already so I can imagine they will be awesome once you're done with treatment. I know what you mean about making the decision - I'm still in college and have been on my own financially since before I was 18 so its tough to pay for school and rent and everything else and then add orthodontic treatment to that too! But I knew it was the right choice. I shopped around and decided to get dental insurance. What I'll pay for it over the course of treatment is still worth is in terms of the money i'll save on all of the dental stuff plus the discount on the ortho treatment. All in all the ortho stuff comes out to about 3600 (it was nearly 5k but I got the insurance discount) I think it was and after my down payment it is $159/month. Not bad and totally worth the financial sacrifice.

Good luck with treatment. Everyone told me wax is your best friend (everyone on this site pretty much says that) and it is so true. I've made the mistake of being lazy and not putting some on for work where I have to talk a lot or to bed where my mouth molds over the braces and wow did I regret that!!

Few quick updates:

Pain is not so bad. Can't really feel it until I try to eat something. Still haven't ventured too much into hard foods. Had some mac and cheese tonight but pretty much swallowed it whole--much easier that way. I'm sure I would chew more things but the one tooth on the bottom that's especially crooked (almost in crossbite) and my left canine are colliding before my back molars can meet (as they would when chewing). This sends a shot of pretty bad pain through my head. Not good. I called the orth about this and was told this is normal and I'll have to stick it out. I really hope this changes because that's definitely the most painful thing I'm dealing with now, and it happens completely unexpectedly. I even woke up a few times from accidentally biting together. No good.

On a movement note, my front teeth used to sit basically RIGHT in front of my bottom teeth (barely any space in between, which is why I have to get top braces first to accommodate some space before the bottoms are put in). Anyway, I'd say there's about a mm of space now between the tops and bottoms when they're closed. I'm not sure if this is faster than expected, because he said he wasn't planning on adding bottoms for another 4 months or so. I guess we'll see at my first adjustment (in a little under a month)

Also, a little juicy gossip (in the world of my orthodontics anyway). As I mentioned earlier, the orthodontic practice consists of one doctor and his receptionist who doubles as the assistant (she does the molds/x-rays, etc) Anyway I asked for her email today when I called and it is her full name, and it hits me--THEY'RE MARRIED!! I had wondered before if there's any tension being that they're opposite sex and working side-by-side day in and day out, and lo and behold...they're married. Maybe not as groundbreaking as it is to me, but still super interesting. They hid it really well.

Anyway. I have reservations with my mom on Monday for lunch, so hopefully I can eat something decent, or at least bite down by then!

Oh, ps, I don't know if anyone else experienced this, and maybe it has to do with what the dentist put on my teeth before attaching the braces, but my teeth, (especially on the fronts and bottoms (not so much the backs) feel very rough. Even after brushing vigorously they don't get that slick/smooth feeling I get on the bottoms. I'm a little concerned and I HATE this because I feel like I've never brushed well enough, even though I'm brushing literally each time I eat, flossing, flouride, etc. Tell me this is normal!

Thanks for reading <3

5 day befores and afters?!

#13 Post by pinkpixie1588 »

I really didn't think I'd be able to do this, but I'm gonna post 2 before/after series' that will show the two main things that have changed in my first five days of braces. Very exciting. I knew I could FEEL that things were different but seeing it is unreal.

#1. You'll notice how the deep bite is starting to pull back some (YAY!)..but it looks like my smile is a little crooked now; maybe because of that really crooked tooth on the bottom, it's getting in the way of closing my back teeth normally because my canine is hitting where it never did before.

Image

#2. The lateral incisor (tooth directly to the left of my front teeth in this pic, for laymen), used to be rotated quite a lot and has now come back almost right into line. Yay!!!

Image

Any comments much appreciated! I know my story isn't as exciting as some others' and my changes aren't as drastic--but still awesome to me! I still don't understand how this can possibly take 18 months. Everything seems to be shifting around so quickly and even the deep bite, which was supposed to take the longest to correct, seems to be coming along after only 5 days on the most relaxed wire! Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but still exciting nonetheless. :)

It's been so long since i've checked in here, so I thought I'd stop by and add a little update of my progress over the last few months. It will be nice to be able to come back once my braces are off and see what emotions I was going through at each stage.

I've had my braces on for just a little over 5 months, now. I had the top brace put on first, and the bottom one added on Sept. 2nd. So, it's been a little over a month and my next (4th or 5th--can't remember) adjustment is on Wednesday (Oct. 7th). Before getting the lowers on I had to have interproximal reduction between my bottom 4 teeth, I guess to give them a little more wiggle room and also to ensure that they will lay flush against one another once all is said and done. That was an interesting experience. It doesn't hurt, but as someone who can't STAND the sound of people grinding their teeth, it's not much easier to have someone essentially floss your teeth with a metal filing board. I was terrified when the orth. told me that there would be bleeding because of how far down (they have to touch the gum) the metal has to go, but that I wouldn't feel it. After he finished, he told me that surprisingly, my gums hadn't bled at all bc they're "extraordinarily healthy". That was a big pat on the back and made it feel like it's been worth all the time spent in front of the mirror trying to thread floss through these damn brackets.

I was also told my bottoms would hurt a lot more than the tops (a scary thought!). But, I didn't find that. Maybe I'm just accustomed to a constain, dull pain now. Who knows? BUT, I have to disagree with all of the people who say that metal brackets are less intrusive or less noticeable/painful than clear. I have sapphire brackets on top and metal on bottom and for the first time in 5 months I got a sore from one of my bottom wires rubbing against my lips. It was brutal, but I finally broke open that wax I was given and used that for about 3 days until it healed. Hasn't happened since.

Now, my bottom and top arches are basically perfect, in and of themselves. BUT, my midline is off now. My orth told me to expect this, and I image over the month after this next adjustment that will begin to correct itself. Again, after 5 months I still don't believe this can take another year or more. I'm hoping when I go in on Wed my orth tells me that things are moving much more quickly than he thought and they'll be off in no time. We'll see!

I'll add pictures later. I have to track down the USB cord for the camera.

:)
