Maybe it's just me,

Everytime I say something that incorporates the letter s, the spaces in my teeth mistake it for a tune and I end up sounding like Gopher from Winnie the Pooh. That's kinda embarrassing.

To make matters worse, I talk on the phone...all...day...long!

Anywho!

The day that I started school in late September, I went to speak with the advisor to clear up some issues and get a student I.D. Frankly, my silver encrusted grill is a metal detector for anyone within a 30 yard radius of me that has a grill like mine, such as the girl who helped me that day.

I was so excited I could barely contain myself.

After looking back I'm pretty sure I looked like a total doofus and made her uncomfortable with my excitement because I:

a) Was cheesing really hard so she could see that I was her twin.
b) I was intently staring at her mouth (I got a view of her powerchain!) to check out her progress.

I didn't want to ask her any questions about her braces because that would have been so unprofessional :P. But the rest of those rules went straight out the window seeing I gave her some sharp cheddar and had my eyes fixed on her mouth. To avoid ruining myself any further in this serious situation, I didn't say anything.

However, if I see her again I am definitely going to clear the air. Had that been me...I would of thought she was lusting after my lips :yikes:

Wishing I Could Eat in Private

#32 Post by HeyBuckey! »

ImageTo Alibracket!

Man o man!!! You know, I seem to find myself with an audience just about everytime I eat. In an earlier post of mine I mentioned the likeness of my chewing to my grandfather's dog's yet, people seem to think it's funny that I have an oral handicap and I have to chew carefully or my slightly chewed food may end up back on the plate, bowl, or saucer. Not to mention the smacking and other strange noises that couples with an open mouth, metal, and saliva!

You definitely can learn alot from animals.

That statement includes growling and slopping out of a bowl if you feel the urge :P.

At least they won't point out you're chewing louder than they are!

Adventures in Metal!!!

#33 Post by HeyBuckey! »

Strange thing about the Metal Mouth Message Forum - If you're not at the top, there's a possibility no one will look at your story -OR- if you're like me...You want to see pictures!!! Dang It! I guess I better get in the loop...

My cell phone would be my camera however, my cell phone came from a different carrier than my provider. And I seriously thought I was beating the system :P. Like my mother says, "Not everything at the dollar store is good." (Not that I got my cell phone from the dollar store by the way :))

I guess the best things in life AREN'T free. Liars! Who comes up with this stuff anyway?!

All this morning I have been trying to get my cell phone reconfigured so I can send my pictures to my email. It has been the biggest pain in my buttocks! I can't even post straight :?. It's kind of like biting your tongue while you’re eating your favorite food. I really like my cell phone, but I must not be its best friend right now.

Now on the teeth. There is some strange stuff going on in my mouth. Senorita Man Hands’ blunt force trauma wound healed very nicely only it's still tender and I still can't brush it effectively. That's when I turn to my trusty old friend Peroxide. "O how I love thy bubbles and thine fizz! Mine heart dost weep for thy beauty of thou bleach flavor.

My top left side seems to be on the move! So much that my left incisor is longer than the right! And I thought the first day with terminator teeth was bad! This one takes the cake. My smile goes at an uncanny upward slope. Downward if you’re a right to left reader. OH WELL!!! I just won’t smile anymore…

HA! Like that’s gonna happen :).

HeyBuckey, I've been reading your blog for a few days now without posting anything, but after your encouragement for the silent readers a few posts ago, decided to let you know I really liked your sense of humor and writing style. I'm following your progress, but it's a bit difficult without pictures... I know you're working on getting them posted and can't wait :) I'm sure you'll enjoy looking back at them in a few years when your teeth are all nice and perfectly straight

I can fully relate to what you said about eating like your grandfather's dog  And having an audience at each meal does not help. Hopefully this is just another one of those skills that one masters while having braces. If you lived closer, we would have to have lunch together - what a show that would be :-*

Anyway, I loved your burrito story and I wish I had read it sooner! I cant wait to see your pics!

I WANT PICS TOO!!!!!

#38 Post by HeyBuckey! »

Hi All!!!!

It has definitely been at the top of my to do list to get my pictures up. I think I've found a solution but it may take up to 3 weeks to get things up and running! What I was thinking of doing, is using someone elses resources until I can get that going. The catch is, finding a person who wouldn't mind me sending them a couple pics and turning around to email them to me.

At this point in my life, I'm pretty high-maintenance :).

Until this is all underway, I'm going to scrape together some before pics that I already have loaded. And one day soon...BAM! I'll take the web by storm with actual pics :).

I hope it goes that smoothly :?

Thanks to these wonderful reprimands (I mean it in a good way!) I will surely post something!

PrettyWoman:

Thank you very much for the compliment, truly, it means everything to me to be able to keep up with what is going on with everyone that's on the board. I've been looking at AW since May this year and it was the one thing that kept me interested and thensome in getting braces. Now if only my cell phone would cooperate with me :). I got it specifically because it had a camera and now it's betraying me!!!! I definitely will check out your post!

LOL!!! That would definitely be a show! I could imagine people walking by our table and doubling back and having that look of horror their face that says "OMG! BOTH OF THEM HAVE BRACES!!!" Ok, so maybe people have a little more sense than that (at times) but it would still be friggin hilarious! You gotta tell me...does it take you a really long time to eat as well?

Coralina:

I know a fellow burrito lover who just happened to write a story Ode to a Burrito which is by Opera^Gal. So full of poise and poetic! My burrito story was kind of...gross seeing I thought I swallowed a piece of skin with the tortilla :yuck:. You definitely went the safe and effective route of getting that burrito eaten! I commend you!!!

Emms!!!:

Yeah, I know... I want pics too! As soon as I get these pics up, you'll be the first to know! :). I think my cell phone may be possessed :|. After getting my picture messages to work it's now telling me I'm not MMS Enabled! Electronics are EVIL, shear EVIL!

Hi Buckey, happy to hear you're very creatively working on getting the pictures posted 8) Once you're able to get them off your stubborn and uncooperative phone, the rest will be super easy. There are instructions in the How Do I section of the forum and they walk you through everything. Now, going back to that phone, does it have a removable memory card that stores pictures? Because if it does, maybe you can take the card out, plug it into a computer and download the pictures onto the hard drive :?: Just a thought...

Yeah, I got a visual on that scene in the restaurant you're describing  It would be worth a movie (wonder why hasn't anyone made a movie about an adult getting braces yet :?: maybe because ALL the big stars have perfect teeth...)
Yes, it does take a loooooong time to eat anything, because of the buildups, which do not let me chew properly or quickly and the fact that I have to cut up pretty much anything into small pieces. For the last two weeks I've eaten the following using knife and fork: ham & cheese sandwich, a hamburger, a KitKat, a chcocolate eclair... the list goes on  How are you handling the restrictions? And knowing your creative spirit, you must have a lot of good ideas on how to eat with braces while looking a lot more graceful than your grandfather's dog

PrettyWoman walking down the street :D

Oh man! I think I may have found a solution. I don't have a really high-tech phone (I can be cheap sometimes) so there is no memory card :(. however, I am able to send my pictures to my carriers website. I can't check anything at work that has to do with personal storage so I'll be checking how the pictures came out later on this evening and what they actually look like on the big screen :o I'm SO EXCITED!!! I hope it works too, nothing from the jump has worked so maybe, JUST MAYBE this may get me up and running. Thanks for the tip, I'll save that info for the forum to my favorites for reference!

Your so right. If they made Ugly Betty and it's a hit they should definitely do a movie for adults with braces for GOODNESS SAKE!!! It would make a good comedy...that's for sure!

I'm glad you asked about the restrictions.

I normally try to find foods that aren't messy since I have a regular audience of some sort :). I consider spaghetti, burritos, salad, pizza, and any kind of casserole messy so I definitely steer clear of those in public places and/or with a large group of people. If I have no other choice I don't smile or talk to anyone before running to the ladies room to check out my grill :). Right now I don't have my molar bands (they come on tomorrow) so I usually throw all food to the back of my mouth allowing my trusty old back teeth to do all of the work. I guess that ends tomorrow :(. Sometimes I'm just barbaric. Moments when I feel like saying "SCREW IT!!! I'm eating it anyway!" things can get a little on the messy side.

That!...Is when I'm at the peak of my creativity
How many ways can someone with braces eat a whole apple?
Don't test me when I'm hungry because I DON'T want to be the one to tell you.

PS...How did it work out eating a KitKat and chocolate eclair? Now that is creative! I would've never thought of that! Oooh! I forgot, I take really small bites sometimes to avoid those nasty build ups. That works the best when I'm being civilized. :D

Hi Buckey, sounds like you're definitely getting closer to figuring out the pictures issue - that's great news :) Can't wait to put the teeth to the nickname

I agree with you on the list of messy foods - definitely wouldn't try any of these in public, unless I had my trusty knife and fork :D That's how I managed to breeze through the KitKat - cut it into very small pieces, ate them one at a time and then scooped up all the crumbs using a spoon - mmmm, heaven  I also discovered that cutting up pizza makes it quite managable, but still leaves the mess behind... so for now I stick to pasta, rice and soups - at least the chunks stuck in my grill are not bright red  But for the life of me I can't imagine how one could even try to eat a whole apple :?: Could I please ask for a demonstration?

I don't think your molar bands will create any new restrictions for you... I personally don't have them (and my ortho said I wouldn't need any) but from the numerous pictures seen on this forum they are just metal bands placed around the molars and don't affect your bite or anything. Maybe other people can provide an opinion based on personal experience :?: Keeping my fingers crossed for your appointment tomorrow - hopefully everything goes well :flowerbloom:

Locked and Loaded...Almost...

#43 Post by HeyBuckey! »

OMG!!!

PrettyWoman!!!--I fixed it! I'm not too bad of a techie after all :). The pics will be posted later on tonight. I'm not able to do it at work because our filter blocks anything that looks like personal data or storage. Imagine that! The thing is, I can easily go to Flickr but it brings up a warning sign whenever I try to get to Photobucket.com. What the heck? So...Another long 8-10 hour wait seeing I have an ortho appointment today for molar bands OH YEAH!

Wow! I'm going to have to try the knife and fork thing. I get so impatient and more interested in getting food down my throat than being comfortable. I can just imagine getting fed up and swallowing the KitKat...Whole. Then needing someone to do the heimlich manuever on me :? I commend you as well for
  • a) being meticulous and,
    b) being patient with your meal
Including pizza! I usually frantically break pieces off in a mad like manner, which in the end...still takes an hour to get 2 slices down, and then, I have to use 5 napkins because my hands are covered in sauce and oil :).

I'm a definite rice lover too! That was the first thing I ate after getting terminator teeth :).

I should've taken pictures of the pear I bit into yesterday . That didn't last long, I shortly took your advice, picked up a knife and cut it. It was DELIGHTFUL! I think my teeth know I'm getting my upper wire changed when I get my molar bands today. They've been aching for a few days. Had they not been achy I probably would have went all the way!

I certainly hope they don't! I had heard how some on AW relied on their back teeth to eat until those molar bands came on :x. If so...there goes my eating system!

You are very, very, VERY Lucky! So, so, so, so lucky to have free back teeth! I'll keep you posted and I'll let you know how things went either tonight or tomorrow, accompanied with pics! Woo HOOO!!!!

And finally...

My camera phone isn't cooperating. Some of my pictures are big, and some are small. I hope the big ones aren't overwhelming you like they are overwhelming me right now! I'm so glad I got braces :P. That side view is the pits! Ortho let me know today that...the overjet is going to get worse! Can you believe it? Well...I guess I can. Will try to post more from today's visit tomorrow.

~Ciao~

Congratulations on winning the fight against the camera :-)o I knew you could do it  Wow, you have lovely teeth, they are sooooo white and nicely shaped - I'm jealous  Once your ortho deals with the alignment and overjet, you will have a million dollar smile. Actually, when I saw the first picture, I wondered why you even bothered with braces :)

Hope your appointment went well and the molar bands are not too much of an inconvenience. And you mentioned a new wire on top - that means progress - congratulations again :!: I like your ligs, especially the pink ones - been thinking of getting pink myself, except I have self-ligating braces - what was I thinking??? :?

Don't worry about the overjet getting temporarily worse, I'm sure your ortho knows what he's doing. Did he explain the treatment plan? What will he do once your teeth are all nicely aligned? I'm curious, because I have the opposite problem - no overjet at all. My ortho will be using elastics in a few months to create a little bit of an overjet and overbite, so I wonder what's the plan for you.

I love your idea of swallowing the KitKat - but just in case anyone is reading this - DO NOT try this at home :!: Heimlich may work, but it's still too much of a risk
I've always been a slow eater, so being patient with the meals is not too much of an issue, unless I'm really hungry, but then the braces quickly remind me to slow down.
And I can see you're still experimenting with eating whole fruit - this time it was a pear :!: Wow, I admire your skill and courage; before reading this I didn't even think that was possible :D
I know I'm lucky not to have molar bands, but there had to be some kind of justice out there, that's why I got my lovely blue molar buildups. They prevent me from biting down all the way, which is sometimes irritating and makes eating certain foods quite challenging. But being a "terminator mouth" (love that expression BTW) has been an exercise in patience and adjustment :)

Can't wait to see your new molar jewellery and the new archwire :)
