BooHill's Story
Hi everone
I’ve been perusing this site for a couple of months and I think its time now to start my story. I go in for my x-rays, molds, and spacers on January 4th (2 weeks). I get braces on January 11th. 3 days before my 35th birthday.
I’ve gone for 4 consultations and have decided to go with the first ortho that is in my dentists office.
I would like to say thank you to all of the supportive members here at AW. You guys have really aided in helping me make the final decision to straighten my teeth and you have answered so many of my questions.
My bottom 4 front teeth are rotated a little and the midline is off. On top, my lateral incisors are behind the central incisors and my bite is off on the right side. My sentence is 24 months. Every time I tell people that I’m getting braces, they ask me “why”. Duh. My teeth are not straight. I’ve always noticed that my teeth were a little crowded but I never really considered braces (just wished I had a straighter smile) plus my mother couldn’t afford it anyway. I also think that I speak with a slight lisp that only few people notice. I always thought that people couldn’t understand what I am saying because I sometimes speak VERY fast. Now that I am older I try hard to slow down my speech but I still hear a slight lisp at times. When I was a kid my aunt use to ask my mother if I was speaking Spanish. Now I know that it is my teeth/bite that is causing the lisp. One day when I was in the waiting room at the dentist office, I saw a sign up for the new orthodontist in the office and decided to see what she had to say. I wasn’t really serious at the time. I just wanted to know if it would be possible to straighten my teeth. When she said that it could definitely be done, it sparked my interest and the research started.
I’ve noticed how much you can really see how crooked your teeth are after you get the braces put on. My wire is going to be crazy looking. Lol. I had choice between invisalign, ceramics and damons but I’m getting regular full metal on top and bottom. When my ortho asked my about colored ligs at my consultation, I told her I just wanted plain silver. No colors. But after looking at all of the possibilities, I found that they are actually cute and look like fun. I am definitely getting colors every time I haven’t decided on the first color yet. Any suggestions??. Might as well jazz up my mouth and enjoy the different options.
For the last 2 weeks I have been eating an unbelievable amount of cracker jacks (something I seldom eat), pretzel twists, and chocolate covered peanuts (peanut chews and goobers). I wonder if it is because I know that I have to give up these snacks in a few weeks.
I will get some pictures up soon but I’m going to wait and see if my ortho’s images are available.
Until next time………….

Welcome
My consultation is on the 11th! Hopefully that goes well. Are you excited? And congrats on giving yourself this treatment. Heck, consider it a 2 year visit to the spa, because youre going to love your teeth afterwards.
As for colors, i havent thought about what colors Ive wanted yet. Im thinking about a tealish color. Pink is cute on alot of people, yellows are cute.

I forgot to mention that I will be starting classes at a new school on the same day that I get my braces. (how nice) I get my braces in the afternoon at 12:00 and my classes start at 5:30 that evening. I will remember to take a pain reliever an hour before my appointment.
I like the fact that I will be meeting everyone with them already on. Hopefully no one will notice the first couple of nights until I get use to my new hardware.
Thanks cheyeaitsxchelsea. I am super excited. I can’t think about anything else. It’s crazy. Good luck on your consultation.
I’m thinking about light blue, light pink or lavender ligs. I like the metallics too but I have to see what my ortho offers.

Hey all.
So I went to Walgreens last night doing some last minute Christmas shopping and decided pick up a waterpik and sonicare toothbrush. There were so many to choose from. It took me forever to pick one. I decided on the Oral B Triumph because it comes with the 2 minute timer, a travel case for the brush and a pressure sensor alert. I tend to brush my teeth very hard (I know you are not suppose to). They have been charging up since last night so hopefully I love them as much as everyone else does.

Hi Boohill
...Must be exciting for you to finally begin posting your story. I've noticed some of your previous posts & just wanted to say 'hi'. I'm right behind you in my own journey-hoping to be braced by late jan/early feb. Of course this will be my 2nd time, but I'm excited no less . I've got some long standing issues with my bite that I'm finally going to correct. Visiting this site has helped make this an easy decision for me. Meeting other adults here in braces (or soon to be) has actually brought an element of fun to the whole experience.....plus we're all learning a lot !! Lot's of luck...

Hi mikesmile This site is so great. It has helped me to make the final decision as well to go through with treatment. It’s so nice to be able to talk to adults who are experiencing the same journey. I have learned so much. I’ve had so many questions answered here. Thanks for dropping a post. I look forward to sharing my story and following yours. Good luck.
Now as for my new sonicare toothbrush... I love it!! My teeth feel so clean. I still have to pick up an orthodontic toothbrush head. It’s going to take some practice to use this waterpik. It feels good on my gums but I am making an absolute mess. I can’t see myself ever being able to use one of these in a public bathroom. This will definitely be saved for nighttime at-home use. It’s only been a week. I’m sure my aim will get better soon or I’m going to drown myself.

Hi Boohill,
Congratulations on taking the plunge It will be an exciting journey and I'm sure you'll be thrilled with the results. And knowing that there are lots of people here who will always offer advice and share your joys and pains makes the whole experience better. Can't wait to see your pics and of course your new braces. Regarding lig colours, I would start off with pink and/or blue and then try lavender. Or you can get adventurous and mix all three colours Good thing about ligs is that they get changed monthly, so you will have plenty of opportunities to experiment.
Glad you picked up a new toothbrush and the waterpik. They will come in handy once you have a mouthfull of metal I especially like my waterpik - it's surprising how much stuff gets left behind after even very through brushing. Regarding the ortho tip, I got one and don't really like it. It doesn't have enough bristles and doesn't clean as thoroughly as regular one. I wonder what other people think

Braced with In-Ovation C for 12-18 months
So I ordered my DentaKit yesterday. The red one (I also want the black one but I’ll see how I like it first) I bought some interdental brushes, floss and sensodyne toothpaste as well from my local drug store. I’m still trying to find the ortho attachments for my Oral-B Triumph (Oral-B BraceCare Essentials). I can’t seem to find them in the stores. I’ll probably have to order them online. I’ve seen them there. I posted a question asking if others have purchased the ortho attachments or did they just use the standard one that came with their brush.

I purchased the ortho attachments after some searching - they're not easy to find. If you live in Canada, they can be found at Shoppers Drugmart, but frankly I wouldn't bother. I've been using mine for almost two months and don't like them. They have less bristles than the regular ones and don't clean the teeth well enough. There are two attachments in the package: the actual ortho and another one called Power Tip - this one is useful because it helps to clean the teeth near the gumline or around the brackets and under the archwire, but the actual ortho attachment is (in my opinion) a waste of money. I am going back to using my regular attachment as it worked a lot better.
Good luck with your braces

Ok everyone. I finally got up the nerve to take some pictures. They are not the best quality. I took them with the camera on my phone but I just wanted to post a general idea of what I’m dealing with. I am absolutely horrified with the way my teeth look but I know everyone here will be supportive.
This is an images of my top arch. Excuse all of the metal fillings you see. I am going to get crowns when all of this is done.
Ok this is my right side.
This is my overjet.
Front view.
Bad picture of my bottom arch.

I just left the ortho office and had my records done. The dental assistant gave me a panoramic x-ray and took my impressions. She warned me that the pink impression stuff would taste bad but it didn’t taste like anything at all. It was just so cold. She was very nice. My ortho popped in to see how things were going and I told her I had a few questions for her. She told me she would be glad to answer them when the assistant finished with me. She thought it was great that I had a list prepared. So the official diagnosis is a slight overbite that she said should be no problem to correct. I will get rubber bands to move my top arch back and my lower arch forward a little. I have crowding on the top and bottom and she said I won’t need any more extractions.
So I DIDN’T HAVE TO GET SPACERS. I was so worried about them and didn’t get them. Yippee! My ortho said she tries not to use them on adults because they are so uncomfortable. (She rocks for that) She will put regular braces on the back teeth instead of bands. If they break then we will do the molar bands but she wants to try this way first. Is that normal? I have no clue. So she also confirmed if I wanted metal or ceramic brackets. I was sure that I just wanted regular braces but I asked about the Damon’s because they are smaller and I wanted to hear her opinion of them. She thinks they are a gimmick and assured me that she uses the smallest brackets available and not to be too concerned because we can achieve our goal with the regular braces. So before I left she asked me if I wanted to get the top and bottom brackets put in on the same day next week when I come in. I didn’t realize I had a choice. So yes I do want to get them the same day. My visit was smooth and I’m feeling very happy right now. One more week and I’ll be braced.

Hey Boohill
Your pics show that you have nice big healthy looking teeth which will look awesome when you are finished with your braces!
Lucky you for not having to get spacers. When I had braces the first time, the ortho used molar brackets on my back teeth also. During my treatment, however, several of them fell off & he replaced them with bands. That's when I experienced those wonderful spacers. ...hope they stay put for ya. As far as my new ortho goes, I think he uses bands but I'll find out soon.
