Hi all!

This is a 1 week-old post-op picture of my teeth placed in a plastic splint template and tied up by elastic rubber bands for 1 week immediately after surgery to stable the bite :D

Notice there are some dried-up blood stains on my super dried up lower lip... but most were peeled off and gone after 1 week :D

Braces on for 2 yrs 10 months

Double jaw surgery at AH on a Wed afternoon, November 2009.

Day before Op : Visit to anaesthetist, did E.C.G test, given estimated bill of $3675 for estimated 3 days stay.

Surgery day : Reached hospital at 11am, changed to surgery attire, paid $1700 initial op fee. Op at 12+pm, 2hrs on upper jaw (Lefort I), 2hrs on lower jaw (BSSO). Rested abt 3 hrs ? til wake-up. Immediately wheeled to High-Dependency ward. Developed normal post-op infection (37.6 degrees fever) quickly subsided by night. Parent visited me that night as well. Attached wif IV drip (glucose + antibiotics), oxygen mask, breathing tube in left nostril. By night time, all removed except IV drip.

Appearance: Plastic splint template guide put between upp and lower teeth to stabilise new bite. Tied up wif rubber band tightly

Swelling : Cheeks swelled a bit. Lower lip swell severely compared to upper lip. Lower Lip has many blood stains and tears due to stretching of mouth during Op.

Photo on right was taken 7 days after op just before leaving home for my first post op review. Notice the lower lip swelling has subsided.

ImageImage

Numbness: Lower lip, chin, right nostril, face area beside right nostril. May take 6 months - 1 year to subside...

Pain: Insignificant. Mainly is discomfort due to numbness.

Post-Op day 2: Moved to general ward. Open-air fan ventilated 6 bed ward. Fed 1 bowl of red-bean soup + apple juice (1 meal) and 1 cup of Tea-O (tea without milk) (snack) . Felt very bored, can't wait to discharge. Visited asst. dental surgeon at 1pm. Told can be discharged abt 5pm. Waited til 8pm. Signed discharge form , collected medication at pharmacy and hospitalisation leave cert of 23 days.

Post-Op days 3-4 : Liquid diet for 1st week means feeling hungry often. Have to feed every 2 hrs. Fed on Milo, home-made potato (soup/mashed & sieved), 3-in-1 cereal, home-made Porridge with fish/chicken (mashed & sieved). Medication taken every 8 hrs immediately after food - combination of crushed pills of Amoxycillin, Mentronidazole, Neuroforte.

Post-Op day 5: Body seemed to adjust to liquid diet, hungry less often :) Lower lip swelling gone. Less blood stains and tears on lower lip.

Post-Op day 7: Weight loss abt 5 kg...became underweight.
1st Post-Op review..... new bite is stable but extends 2 more days jus to play safe. Plastic splint removed but teeth still tied up.

Post-Op day 9: 2nd review
Teeth untied and elastic bands nicknamed "rabbit" and "Penguin" used.
Switch to soft diet :D Elastic bands are removed temporarily during eating and brushing. Food needs to cut to small pieces. Teeth can only open up to one index finger (vertical placement). Medication can be taken in pill form :D

To be continued...

Post-Op day 13 : 3rd review

Just hope that my mouth can open wider than one finger so i can eat better cos can't do much abt the numbness part...

Wow  Thank you for your details about post-op. I'll be getting my lower jaw extended next year and it's good to read and see reassuring stories from people who've been through jaw surgery.

Everything is looking great! Keep us updated =D

Can make appt to see ortho already. Numbness stil remain the same, mouth still able to open one index finger (vertical placement).

For those feeling numbness after the op and u have finished the Vitamin tablets, Vitamin B12 in particular is helpful for NERVE HEALING...

Foods such as liver, meat, fish, cereals, egs, milk, cheese , poultry, are rich in Vitamin B12

Post Op day 24: 5th review
Surgeon removed a temporary wire holding one of my tooth as the braces bracket on that tooth was dislodged during surgery. Next review is abt one month later. Also made appt wif ortho to do final adjustments..

Post Op day 26: 1st post-op review by orthodontist
Removed "Penguin" rubber band , but continue with "rabbit" rubber bands..

Note: Those doing lower jaw op will experience numbness of the lower lip and chin.. this means u'll not be aware food dripping out of ur mouth or stuck on ur chin/lip and ppl might stare at you. Also, it can be distracting having the numbness all day and nite long. Also, u can't pronounce properly sometimes. This numbness will take months to fade away so be mentally prepared.

Hi,

Does anyone know/can recommend some excercises to improve nerve healing in those numb areas of lip/chin , reduce swelling, open mouth bigger?

Post Op 1 month 2 wks 2 days : Visited Jaw surgeon to complain abt swollen sensitive gum on the inside of left upper central incisor (which actually started immediately after surgery once they untie my teeth and i started brushing). Surgeon took an X ray and suspect possible infection and prescribed the usual antibiotics and a mouthwash. To review one week later....
