I think your bite will even out once the crossbite is fixed. As for the open bite on one side, it is not really noticeable. I have the same thing happening to me, and for months, and mine still pretty bad (I need to update my story) I have a crossbite as well and my progress has been very slow. Your teeth are looking great whiskers :) How long will you be braced?

When I first got the braces on, they told me 24 to 36 months. ICK! The last time I went in, I asked if this was still going to be my projection. She told me that its looking about 24 to 30 now! Ya! She said that now that my teeth are relatively straight in an arch, that the rest of my treatment will be trying to fix my bite! i am getting brackets on my very back upper teeth at the end of January (my next appointment), i haven't had anything on my upper very back teeth yet. exciting!

expander?!!!

#19 Post by whiskers00182 »

Hey everyone reading my story! I went back to the orthodontist yesturday. They took a mold of my upper mouth, and told me im getting an expander put in in three weeks. I am curious about this, I have done research and looked on this web site for others with this. I am curious, my orthondist said I dont need to get spacers put in before hand? Why am I getting this towards the middle to end of my treatment? is this normal? The orthodontist said that I only have about 6 to 7 months left hopefully! with the exander in for about 5 to 6 of that time. He said im getting a "key" that i will turn myself twice a week to start. is this hard? im having my husband go with me when i get it, so he can see how to work it too. ive you tubed this and it looks confusing on how to turn it? anyone have any problems with this? can you tell im nervous!! lol Im just wondering about why no spacers? how does this get put in, if not between the teeth? do they connect to the bracket that is already wrapped around my back teeth? cement directly to my teeth? I currenly dont have any brackets on the very very back last molars on the upper, the ortho did say that i would be getting brackets on those teeth with the expander is placed. thanks for any comments or suggestions!

Your movement is amazing! I hope mine move as fast as yours. We have similar crossbites, or should I say had.

Lovely teeth, and youll be done in no time. :]

thanks! I was actually looking at your post before you replied and thinking your crossbite was like mine too! Is it true that "great crossbites think like"?? haha. small joke. One tip for you that I can offer. Wear your rubber bands! as often as possible. My orthodontist first had be wearing them only at night, and the second visit after i got them, I asked her if I would just wear them all the time to speed it up and she was like oh ya, do it as often as you can, they only were saying at night to avoid pain. Do exactly what your orthodontist says, no slacking!! hehe. Do you know if you are going to get an expander? Im a little scared of this thing thats going in 2 weeks! eee!

Wow! That is amazing progress, congrats!

I hope the expander isn't too bad for you, I don't have any experience with them though so I can't answer any of your questions, sorry!

thanks!

Im really curious, everything im seeing online has the expander placed at the start of treatment, why is my ortho waiting till the end? just curious if anyone has any suggestions or if anyone had this placed towards the end of treatment? Were my teeth so messed up they wanted them straighter first?

Hi Whiskers, I've never had an expander so I can't help you there. But you raise a good question, because what I've read on AW seems to indicate that it is usually the first step. I hope you find the answer and share it with us.

I just read through your story and looked at your pictures. Not only are you making great progress, but your teeth are really beautiful! I can't wait to see the end result because you're heading for a really beautiful smile.

Thank you catfish! your words are very kind!!

I have noticed in the last couple of weeks my back molars on the right side that crossbite pretty bad are grinding. It almost feels like nails on a chalk board type feeling!!! I am hoping this expander they are playing next Friday will make it better! Its almost giving me a headache! When i bite down its like the top molar hits the bottom and than my upper jaw almost feels like its sliding into a different position.(creating a grinding feeling on my teeth) If that make sense. I will definitely point this out to the orthodontist when I go in. Has anyone out there with a bad crossbite felt this when they had braces? ( i honestly didnt feel the crossbite prior to the braces, but now i really can that they have straighten out).

I am hoping that when I get my expander I can get a doctor note for work to get pulled off the phone, (i work for an insurance company and we talk on the phone all day!) Im thinking after 1 or 2 days ill be able to speak ok?? thats a hope! haha

P.S. does anyone know how to change the heading of my story? I want to change it from just "sarah" any ideas?
