Mara's Story

#1 Post by mara0167 »

Hey there guys!

My name is Mara. I'm a college student and am due to get my braces on March 5th. I had my records appointment on Friday morning and go on Tuesday to get my separators/have my final consultation before brace day!

I've never had braces, but my bite has gotten worse over the years and I'm glad that I am finally doing something about it. According to my ortho, I have a deepbite, lower crowding, narrow arches, and some overjet. My bite on both sides is incorrect and I show too much gum when I smile.

I am scheduled to get top and bottom metal braces and Friday. Later on in my treatment, I will be getting an expander and likely some kind of headgear/bite fixing appliance.

So here I go! Right now I am busy trying to pick which colors I want. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, do the separators hurt? I only have to wear them for 3 days so hopefully they're not too bad.

I'm attaching some pics of my teeth/smile to begin with and hopefully will have pictures of them in braces next weekend!

Hi Mara,

Congrats on your decision and hopefully with the support of your fellow braces wearers your journey will be a pleasant and short one. Your teeth do not look all that bad but I am sure the end result will leave you with that dazzling smile you will be proud of for the rest of your life.

As for the separators, you will be able to endure them for 3 days without much discomfort. I have talked to some people who feel the separators are really worse than the braces, I think I might support that opinion.

Good luck and I look forward to watching your progress.

Hi Mara,
congrats on deciding to get braces, and welcome to archwired :)
If you are trying to pic colours, try searching for the thread called "lig colors" I think its about 100 pages of people posting their different coloured ligs, i searched through that thread for months before I got my braces! Although I chicken out every adjustment and haven't gotten any other colours but grey or black so far.
Also, do you know the name of the appliance you are getting to fix your bite? Right now I have a MARA appliance, which I thought was funny, and I had to comment on your story.
Good luck on your treatment, I cant wait to follow your story!

Hi Mara!

I actually work at a university. I go in tomorrow to get my top wires but I had spacers put in to get my expander in. I've seen a lot of people say that spacers hurt. Honestly mine didn't hurt too much and they had to do some major work to get two of them in. It really just feels tight and like you have crap in your teeth that you want to get out, which you do.

What color are you thinking about? I say go for your favorite! I'm going to try and get the brightest loudest pink that I can get!

So I'm back from my consultation and have my spacers in. I don't really feel any pain yet (other than the fact that it feels weird to have this stuff stuck in my teeth), although the assistant said I should feel it by tonight. The only thing that feels different is that my bite is off since the spacers kind of stick out of my teeth. I have 8 of them - 7 are elastic and one is metal (the space was too tight to fit a rubberband in).

As for my treatment plan, according to my ortho these are some of the things we are going to try and fix during treatment:

- Class II malocclusion (bite doesn't fit properly on either side)
- Deep bite/excessive vertical overlap (about 90%)
- Small overjet
- Mild to moderate crowding and narrow arches
- Gummy smile

I will have to wear regular metal braces for 2 years. In a month or two, I will get a T-Rex expander (has anyone ever had one of these)? The bite fixing appliance, which if needed, I would get later into my treatment would be these two springs that connect my jaws... looks kind of like this:

Hope I don't need it! Looks like torture.

Also, I finally decided on colors for Friday! Dark blue on top and light blue on bottom! I'm nervous about Friday but I'm trying to be excited too!
