braiiins' braces and fun fun fun

#1 Post by braiiins »

A bit late on starting a braces journal, officially working on 6 weeks and 4 days since being braced!

Hi! I'm Stefanie and I'm 26. Had braces at 12, but wimped out after 6 months and had them removed. Finally got the nerve up to do it again! I was given the option of braces + extractions + surgery, or braces + extractions + headgear. I chose the latter, since the former would have cost an additional $12-20,000 (tell me that isn't RIDICULOUS!) and my insurance doesn't cover adult ortho.

I've got, according to my ortho, a "severe class 2 division 1 extraction case" with treatment length of 3-4 years. No crossbite, >50% deep bite, 8mm overjet, upper and lower midline off right, upper crowding >4mm, lower crowding >6mm, and TMJ. After all is said and done, I will have had 8 teeth removed in addition to the braces.

Jan 26, 2010: Braces were put on. Took 3 hours! Was feeling pretty ok, had no problems speaking, no real soreness, just on the inside of my cheeks and lips. It was very difficult to eat, but I wasn't in any real pain. This is how it went for about a week and a half - discomfort, not pain. Lucky!

Feb 19, 2010: 6 of the 8 teeth came out - 2 lower wisdoms + all 4 bicuspids (other 2 will come out probably next year). The day of and days 1 and 2 post-op were pretty easy, but day 3 was pure hell. The pain got so bad I was in tears, and that was while on Percoset! Day 4 was a bit better, and by day 5, I was feeling much better. Day 7 would have been my first great day, except I lost too much weight from not being able to eat, and I'm small already, so I looked starved.

Eating was HARD because every time I even smelt food I felt nauseous, and that's horrible to me because I LOVE to eat! My husband helped me force about a bowl and a half of soup (by watching me with the hawk-eye), and I felt much better. Day 8 was much easier to eat, and I was really wishing I could eat something like a taco! :)

Hoping the way my cheekbones are standing out more is just because I need to put some weight back on, and not from getting teeth pulled!

Mar 11, 2010: First adjustment. I was more nervous about this appointment than I was about getting the 6 teeth pulled! The ortho put a power chain on the uppers to start closing the gap, but skipped the lowers for now, something about my upper teeth touching in the wrong spot when I close my mouth.

Surprisingly, not much pain from the power chain. It was very uncomfortable when he first put it on, but it went away quickly, and is now only uncomfortable when I eat. I'm thinking the worst part of this process (the wisdom teeth extractions) is over, and I'm happy about that!

So that's it for now... not very interesting, but it's been somewhat uneventful so far... not that I'm complaining :)

And here's some pictures of the process so far... not something I would normally share, out of embarrassment, but I've been reading through this forum and everyone seems so nice, and I know everyone here is going through, will go through, or already went through the same thing I am, so it puts my mind at ease a bit.

Welcome to AW, Stephanie!

Wow, I can see a lot of progress just in the past couple of weeks. Isn't it exciting? Good luck on your journey and keep us updated! :)

Ken, yep, I noticed movement on the lowers almost immediately! They've actually bothered me more than the uppers, they've felt loose almost the entire time I've had the braces!

gokix, It's very exciting :) Hopefully it means everything will move that much faster!

So last night I tried the headgear for the first time. OWWW! I lasted about 2 minutes before I just couldn't take it anymore. I think it's going to take A LOT of getting used to, slowly...

Hi Stefanie
Good to hear that you are getting on well with your braces. You seem to have a lot of movement very quickly.

I am getting braced this day next week and i m both terrified and excited about it. My teeth would be very similar to yours and i feel a lot better about it after seeing your progress.

I have nt had the courage to post any pics yet but i will try to do both the before and just braced pics next thursday.

Good luck in your journey

Maggie - congrats on getting braced this Thursday! Wish you lots of luck.

----------

So last weekend I started wearing the headgear. I couldn't remember where it was supposed to attach, but the first night it wasn't too bad. The second night, my husband was convinced that it was supposed to attach somewhere else than wear I had worn it the first night, and I was pretty sure he was right... so I moved it. That was excruciating!

I called the ortho the next day to find out exactly how I was supposed to wear it, and it turns out I had it in the right place the first night (albeit on backwards, so it irritated my ears), and the wrong place the second night (but facing the right way, lol), so the excruciating pain wasn't going to happen again (thank goodness!).

I'm learning what foods are the most annoying with braces. Rice I found out early on gets caught VERY easily... but I deal with it because I love rice. Shredded chicken is horrible... gets caught in the sockets (which are still healing from the extractions), in the braces, in between my teeth and the wire... I had a sandwich with shredded chicken in it the other day, and got a chunk caught between two brackets and the archwire. I had an impossible time getting it out, and found out that night that I hadn't gotten it all out... and learned why. One of the tie wires holding the archwire to a metal bracket had come loose, and was poking out (which was also why my cheek was starting to get a little torn up). I did my best to push it back into place, but by the next day, it just drove me crazy and wasn't doing anything for holding the archwire, so I removed it. I also noticed the tie wire on the bracket in front of that one was stabbing my cheek a bit.

Last night I started feeling a little discomfort in the back of my mouth, but figured it was just the bracket on the furthest back tooth on the bottom. After the extractions, my face shape has changed, and my cheeks have sunken in a bit, causing them to sit on the brackets more than before, which is causing irritation in my cheeks. Today I realized that's not what the irritation was from - with closing the gaps on my upper teeth, the archwire is being moved, and for the first time, it's popped out of the back bracket, stabbing me back there. Ouch! I have to wait until tomorrow to go get it clipped... so I have been defeated by the archwire, and have used wax for the first time since getting the braces on!

Went in today to get the problems fixed. The tie wires were replaced without a problem, but the archwire proved difficult. There wasn't much sticking out (just enough to tear apart the back of my mouth!), so he tried shaving it down a bit with the drill. That didn't work, so he took off the right power chain, pulled the archwire in the back, clipped it, and put it back. Then what I was dreading (ok, not really, just knew would end up happening!), they replaced both power chains, so I got a very early adjustment. I also get to keep my other appointment (4 weeks from now... or is it 3?). Guess things are moving quickly enough to justify that many adjustments... Yippee. Luckily, though, this one doesn't seem to be bothering me!

13 days after getting the first power chains put on top teeth (1 day after second set put on) here is the gap that has developed on one side from the chains trying to close the extraction gap (which is on the right side of the photo, you can see a bit of it). Keep in mind there was no gap between the two teeth where the arrow is pointing as of the day the chains were put on... never thought things could move that fast. There is a similar gap on the other side, but it's a bit smaller than this one. Not looking forward to the opening and closing of gaps I'm sure will happen all over my mouth until this is all done!

Also one day after new power chains put on, no discomfort at all. Yay!

cosmo, it did! I was very surprised by how fast! There's still some work that needs to be done down there, including closing the gaps from the bottom bicuspids being extracted.

Ken, I don't think he'll be extending the PCs that way, if I'm not mistaken the headgear is what's going to move the four front teeth that aren't chained.

And speaking of headgear... I did start developing a tiny gap between the two front teeth... thinking it's because I skipped the headgear for a few days...

Ken, I had headgear the first time around, too, but this one is different than that one was. This one hooks onto the archwire between the laterals and the canines. The ortho's explanation of why I need was... well, hazy. Love him, but don't think he's the best with explaining!

At some point Saturday night / Sunday morning I woke up to a loud POP in my mouth. Since this had happened once before, I knew what it was - I had stretched, clenched my teeth really tightly, and popped a bracket off. Yippee, now I get to go back to the ortho again tomorrow!

Luckily, my dentist is in the same building, so I'm going to pop in there after the ortho. I either got some food caught up in the back where I can't reach to floss, or there is some sort of infection going on back there. It's swollen today and very sore when anything touches it. Unfortunately, it's on the opposite side of the bracket that came off, which is still attached with the tie wire, so eating is hard today - the bracket moves and scrapes the tooth and pulls on the archwire on the left, the swollen area hurts on the right.

So hungry!

Ortho visit went well. The bracket was replaced, had him look at the swelling, but he seemed to see something I hadn't, and told me it looked like I had an abscess. He called down to my dentist to see if I could go down when I left with him. My dentist wasn't in the office, but the other one was, so I went to see her.

She took a look and said what the ortho thought was an abscess was just a bony overgrowth that's normal and not uncommon. The swelling she said looks like it's just from some plaque buildup from not being able to clean back there well enough, so she gave me a baby toothbrush to be able to reach better.

When I got home, I realized my canine felt loose and sore again, and noticed that the ortho had taken the powerchain off the right.

Hoping these brackets stay put for awhile!
