Newbie to the world of brace

#1 Post by ralphylad »

Hey everyone, Im 28 from the UK, had my brace fitted Tuesday, 10th Aug 2010, I went for standard metal "train track" braces on top and bottom.

My teeth were only really crooked on the right hand side from where I had a fight a few years ago and got kicked in the mouth.

I have recessed malcocussion, on my front incisor which underlaps my left incisor, also have flared overjet on most teeth

The ortho has said I will only need them on for a year so pretty happy about that, bieng only a week in the pain has kind of subsided but I keep getting it in my head that I am not gonna get the results I want in a year, has anyone else had the same thoughts when they first got there brace on?

Congratulations on having the guts to have braces as an adult; a year is a short time in if that is accurate, regardless of how long it will actually be for completion just remember that you have done something really good for your self and you will ultimately be very glad.

I think we all look at those before and after pictures and think 'well my teeth are never going to do that, I'm sure that I'm going to have loads of problems and be stuck in braces forever for no reason.... <nightmare continues>'.

I feel like I'm going to have crooked teeth forever. I keep imagining the day that my two front teeth are finally uncrossed, and it feels unreal - like a dream that will forever be just out of reach.

Braces have been around for years and the methods and technology just get better and better. While some people don't get the results they want, most people end up with better teeth - and chances are you'll be one of those :)

We got our braces on the same day! I'll be comparing your progress now to mine! Lucky you that has only a year in them, I will be 18 months! I'm hoping it flies by!

Best of luck with your teeth - they'll be fab when they are done :-)

thanks everyone, I am still shocked about them only needing to be in a year and I am now wondering if I should speak with my ortho when I am next in to check that they will really be out so soon, Im still feeling slight pressure especially in front teeth today, earlier it was just back molars and seems to go just between them both back and forwards, first day I havent needed pills today though so happy about that.

I have only been in them a week and already I feel like they should be tightened, I want them to move :( its another 6 weeks before I am in to have my ligs replaced, plus today I was play fighting with wife and she caught me in the mouth, I wont be doing that again, luckily my braces and teeth are fine, I will get some pics up when I find out how to upload them.

heres my pic now a few questions; what do you think my ortho has planned to do, you will see my right tooth (shown here on the left) is behind my left tooth slightly and straight in comparison, do you think she is intending to straighten the rest upto its level? I also have a similar crooked tooth on the bottom underneith. my canines are also flaring out slightly and I imagine these will move quickly and stright out with the others, sorry for the color I have had a lot of coffee today.

first noticed something today, my lower right incisor is now touching the back of top right tooth so my teeth have obviously moved to some extent because they never done that before, I tried to floss my fron teeth again earlier and this absolutely killed and the pressure was again back.

Thursday, 19th Aug - Had pretty much uneventful day with brace today however my molars started aching at around 5pm and have been all night to now 22:24.
when I bite I can feel how loose my molars are also noticing I am biting my teeth really hard while I am asleep and waking up with aching jaw and teeth, wonder if this is common?

Monday, 23rd Aug 2010 - Noticed that bottom right incisor changing even more when I used to run my tounge across is it would feel like it was really wonky, there is near enough no gap to get my tounge behind now, which is reassuring, teeth havent been givin me to many problems last few days, the odd bit of molar ache but front teeth are pretty comfortable.

Sat, 28th Aug 2010 13:20 - Quick update, molars hurting yesterday, not to bad today although I can feel pressure on my front teeth, I have been trying to floss as much as I am able with wires getting in the way; today I noticed the slightest gap between my two front teeth starting high in the gum line, so the teeth have definately moved, these are the two teeth I am most looking forward to having straight, the left incisor is root canelled meaning its darker and stands even more besides it being wonky. managing food a little better each day. also took a nasty bash at BJJ the other night while grappling, shreaded my mouth to pieces, technical drills only from now on!
3 weeks down, 49 to go!

Ok so I have had my first tightening done 8 weeks to the day, I go in they had to replace to of my bottom brackets because they were not allowing a wire to thread through this involved crackin them off my two back molars and reapplying a new pair of brackets just to the bottom.

I was told by my ortho that she would be using a higher gauge wire and this would put more tension on the teeth, however its been 3 days now and it hasbt been half as bad as my first tighten,

I am booked in again for another tighten on the 9th November and gonna mention it to her them to maybe put a real tight wire on because I can take the pain pretty well.

took a little knock at training again this week, I am really gonna have to be carefull, good job ive got a good shield!
