Kitsune's Amazing Adventure with Braces

#1 Post by kitsune »

I will be turning 30 in a few weeks, so I decided to get myself a rather unconventional birthday present - braces! This is my story. :D

Even though my smile isn't "that bad" (as people have told me for yeeeeears now), it has bothered me since I started losing my baby teeth! The very first tooth I lost came in crooked and caused all of my other teeth on the bottom row to become crowded. I have wanted braces for years, but the time (and insurance coverage) never seemed to be right. Luckily, things change! Thus...

I had spacers inserted August 26th and didn't see what all the fuss was about. These were supposed to be the worst part of braces? Hah! A little bit of time would drastically change my opinion once I realized how evil spacers truly are. My teeth are very tight and the technician had a lot of trouble inserting them between my teeth. In fact, I think this difficulty is why one of the spacers snapped and popped out later that night. In a panic, I called the office and left a weird freaked-out message. Unfortunately, since this was Friday night, I did not hear back from someone until Monday morning. The woman who called me back said it was "fine" and I shouldn't worry about it. Turns out this was far from "fine" when I was getting molar bands put on, but we will get to that later.

My teeth were sore because of spacers for almost the entirety of the week I had them on. I also hated the feeling of chewing food with rubber bands in my mouth. I was so relieved to get the spacers out...of course that's when the fun really began.

Looking back now, I was so scared that I do not remember every step of the banding process which occurred on September 2nd. I recall a blur of bad tastes, blue light, and those stupid metal molar bands...oh, and did I mention I was wearing shield glasses the whole time? At least I looked cool while being terrified.

Now those pesky molar bands...I have to go back in 3 weeks and get them replaced on the left side of my mouth. Even after having the spacers, my teeth were still incredibly tight, so the technician and I had to work together in a combination of biting and manual pressing to get them to fit over my teeth. She kept telling me "pushpushpushPUSH" while placing the bands...very odd. I thought I was at the orthodontist not Labor and Delivery?? The end result is that the metal is a bit crumply and I can feel it when I bite down. She consulted with the orthodontist because she "wasn't happy" with the end result, but he felt that if I was okay with it, we would leave the bands in for a little while to make more room. After my teeth space out a bit more, the molar bands can be replaced. I hope this process is not that bad because the whole glue and band removal thing makes me pretty nervous.

I decided to go with ceramic on top and metal on the bottom. Oh, and I have two power chains on the bottom row. This isn't to close up gaps, so I think they are being used to pull my teeth back to make more room? Not sure.

The first day post braces was absolutely BRUTAL. I found myself wondering what I had gotten into. Fortunately, this forum really helped ease my mind. I definitely have a more positive attitude and I look forward to documenting my journey. Thanks for reading!!

Over the weekend I started having a lot of pain from wires poking me in the cheeks. I got completely fed up with having a mouthful of wax yesterday, so I gave the office a call to see if they could squeeze me in today for a little wire snipping. Fortunately for me, they had an open spot at 12:45 pm. Unfortunately it was a completely disgusting and rainy day here in NYC, so I had to take a cab there and back (it’s a little embarrassing to take one when my ortho is just 7 blocks away, but I didn’t want to arrive completely soaked). My ortho’s lovely technician (she’s so kind!) spent a lot of time making sure that I couldn’t feel any wire pokes and “molded” some of the molar band sides that were bugging me as well. I immediately felt so much relief…ahhh! :)

I hope my next appointment to replace molar bands is not too awful. I am overly paranoid about ending up with a cracked tooth, but I think that is because all of this metal and glue and whatnot in my mouth is still weirding me out.

I have also decided to post my pre- and post- banding pictures so that everyone can see them. I’m thinking about getting colored ligs next time on the bottom. I still want to keep clear ligs on top until I see how I feel about having colored ones on the bottom. I have no idea what my ortho’s selection is like for ligs…here’s hoping it isn’t all fluorescent orange and green!

PS – no offense if you like those colors, but I work in the type of environment where suits are the norm and it might clash a little.

Gah! :-((

SO TIRED OF TELLING PEOPLE AT WORK TO "EXCUSETH THE LISPTH"!!! I'm having a lot of trouble with "s" and "f." I can't wait for my mouth/tongue to toughen up or whatever it is that makes a lisp go away. Actually, I think the reason why my lisp has gotten progressively worse over the past few days is due to all of the cuts I have on my tongue from these stupid molar bands.

I am going back to the ortho on Friday to have a few more tweaks made to the bands. I feel like there is a new crumply painful area every day! I've been wondering if this is normal or if I am just having excessive issues for some reason. Also! Pokey wire is back. I am not eating anything harder than pasta. How is it poking the side of my cheek again already??

I felt like crying at work today due to all of the frustration with metal owwies and eating difficulties. Oddly enough, the only (verbal) reaction from coworkers has been along the lines of "Huh, well I didn't think you needed braces." Oh, actually I got one today that kinda upset me..."You got braces??? Aren't you supposed to do that when you're a kid?" Naaaah, I'm just doing this for fun! :-+

Everything I've written makes me sound like the whiniest person in the world, but I just need to vent a little. And when I finally get that nice smile of my dreams I will look back on this and laugh. Here's hoping!

Got THREE of FOUR molar bands removed this morning...bye bye power chains too.

See thread for more details: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=40289

Now some of my teeth are seriously wiggly and funky. I feel like I have a lot of drama going on in my mouth...beginning to think I am driving my husband and co-workers slightly crazy with my "updates."

Haha. Your original story made me laugh. I didn't get spacers in.. I don't know what half of these devices are or what they're even for. Your braces look nice though! I don't know even know what my top ones are.. they're somewhat clear, but they don't look as clear as yours. It almost looks like you're only wearing a retainer on the top. I'm jealous. Wish I could get something a little less noticeable, but I guess it's too late to discuss other options now. Anyway, I feel the same way you do. Been complaining to my husband over the phone (and he's deployed) since day 1. He hasn't even seen me in person with them yet, so I'm definitely insecure about that, although I know he won't really care, it's still embarrassing I feel, at my age. In the end it'll be worth it. Good luck with yours!

Thanks for stopping by, Koof :)

You are very lucky to have not experienced the evil rubber bands known as spacers!! I have no idea what type of ceramic brackets were used on me. Some people seem to know absolutely everything about their braces, but I, on the other hand, do not. Well, except for the molar bands...we are VERY well acquainted at this point.

When will your husband get to see your braces? My husband is totally fine with mine, but when I first got them on, he couldn't stop staring at my mouth. I understand that though, since I am constantly staring at my mouth these days too...haha!

Best of luck with your journey!

Tomorrow is my birthday...the whole reason I decided to "treat" myself to braces. I am just happy that my tooth pain has decreased enough that I will be able to eat something other than yogurt/cottage cheese/grits/oatmeal/mush. I'm still kinda eating like a snake since my teeth have shifted enough to make chewing funky, but I will try my hardest to eat like a normal person gosh darnit.

My husband and I are going out to an old-timey Soviet era-esque caviar/vodka bar for the big day. I will avoid any toast points, but blinis here I come!

I'm going in for my first adjustment this coming Friday, September 23rd. I have to admit that I'm a bit nervous! Will they put the evil molar bands back on? Just thinking about that makes me want to jump off the balcony...gah.

I'm assuming they will change out my ligs at this appointment?? If so, I am going to try full color on the top and bottom....kinda daring for me. Wish me luck!

So! First adjustment.

Everything went great...my ortho even complimented me on the good tooth/braces care I've demonstrated so far.

When I asked him if I could get colored ligatures instead of his standard clear on top/grey on the bottom, he stopped, stared at me, and asked "Are you serious?" He then told me that out of all of the adult patients he has seen, I am one of TWO that have requested colored ligatures. A bunch of the staff even came to look once he put them on. What color did I end up getting?

Baby blue!!!

I LOVE THEM! I think they look very pretty and I cannot wait to try out more colors! I think I will go for a darker blue or a purple during my next adjustment.

Here is my new mouth: PS please ignore the glob of wax...I slept on my face (why?!) and have a huge gash from my stupid wire.
Image

And here is a somewhat blurry picture but I really like how glowy they look in this lighting.

Not much has changed with my teeth during the past 3 weeks except for the fact that I seem to be growing a gap between my two front teeth. What the heck...

Howdy brace day twin!

Glad to hear your first adjustment went well and I love the blue ligs! I get my adjustment in three weeks and I'm leaning toward pink ligs. I can't wait to see what color options they have though so I might change my mind at that time.

Yesterday I had my second adjustment. As a super fun added bonus, I was told that I was going to have my teeth slenderized in addition to having my ligs changed. I thought to myself, “Well gosh, that doesn’t sound so bad.” I did not know what to expect, so of course I didn’t want to just assume the worst. Having only done research AFTER the fact (I didn’t realize it was something that is done!!), I found that a lot of people said it does not hurt. I guess my mouth is a big wuss because it was a very uncomfortable process which did, in fact, hurt. Since I was out of it yesterday morning and forgot to take ibuprofen probably only made matters worse, but blugh. My teeth are now quite sensitive and the whole situation harkens back to when I first got the braces on. You know the feeling where even touching your tongue to your teeth made you shiver? Yeah…Oh, and apparently there is more slenderizing in my future!

</vent>

Since it is close to Halloween, I decided to go with orange and black ligs! I am not all that satisfied with this combination though. The only orange they had available was a pale orange, and it looks practically invisible against the metal brackets. My next appointment is on November 11th so at least I won’t have to live with the orange weirdness forever. The good news is that I don’t have to worry about staining on the top…whoo! I also like the black ligs a lot. I think I might go with black on the top and bottom next time.

And now what everyone really reads these stories for...pictures! You can actually see a bit of movement...granted it isn't as dramatic as some people seem to have, but it is a big deal for me! I wish I had been taking better pictures this whole time, but now I have a better understanding of the types of pictures to take.

Here is my standard photo pose, biting down. This was taken ~ 1 month and 2 weeks into braces:

Image

Compared to earlier, you can see the kink in my wire straightening out near the left upper front tooth. This picture was taken on day 3 of braces:

Image

My lower teeth are starting to straighten as well. This picture does not exactly demonstrate how crooked the bottom teeth were, but it is better than the bite down pose. Again, this was at 3 days in.

Image

And here we are today. The guy on the lower right is starting to shift into place. My most crooked tooth on the bottom is still an issue though. I think it is getting worse??
Image

I can't figure out why one of my upper front teeth is getting longer! They don't touch anymore either. Where are my teeth going exactly? :? And having re-examined these pictures, I hate those orange ligs...gross. :yuck:

You have beautiful teeth! They're going to be so nice when you're finished. Did your ortho give you a time frame? Your teeth don't look like they'll need very long at all!

Thank you so much for your kind words. That really made my day! :D

During my consultation my ortho told me that I would be in braces for about 14 months. I am hoping that having most of my molar bands removed won't extend that by too much time though. :?

I just thought I'd relay a message from my upper teeth to your upper teeth: "I'm very jealous!" I can't imagine them looking much better than they already do. Lookin' good, girlie!
