Thanks Noni - I hope your tooth has settled down a bit and isn't wobbly anymore - it feels so weird right?? Great to hear its almost aligned - I can't wait until my rogue tooth sits happily with the rest.

Well I've had 2 adjustment since my last entry so I guess I should give a bit of an update...

My first adjustment involved my first wire change (no idea what sizes I've had) and also adding a powerchain to close the gap between my two front teeth. My right front tooth was twisted so once it rotated back the right way, there was quite a big gap between the two. So my ortho puts on the powerchain then tells me to come back in three weeks, or before if the gap closes up sooner. Well...the gap was closed that evening! :jump: I thought I was being too optimistic but by the Monday (3 days later) it was definitely closed. So I called the ortho and moved up my next adjustment by two weeks. I just kept thinking 'they'll be off two weeks sooner now' but I know its probably not that simple. The next adjustment was that Friday. My ortho wanted to give the space created between my two front teeth to my bold pre-molar that's sticking out front so it could slot back in, so I now have a powechain across my whole mouth pulling all my teeth to the right, and a spring between my 1st molar and 1st pre-molar pushing it to the right. I think the plan is to get the tooth into place, then sort out my midline so its not off (at least I hope that's the plan!) Then I was told to come back in 4 weeks. I then asked when my uppers will be going on and she said that she'll be engaging my pre-molar fully next time (?! Its currently not attached to the wire) so I could get them on then! It was meant to take 6 months to sort out these lower pre molars so I'm hoping that since she thinks she'll have them sorted in 3, I might be 3 months ahead of schedule! I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much though because I know all this takes sooooooo much time. But fingers crossed! :-*

So now I am getting my uppers on this Friday! I'm really nervous about getting my uppers on - so far you can't really see my lowers unless you're up close and I'm talking a lot, but I'm worried the uppers will be so obvious! I'm getting ceramic uppers on the front 6 teeth and metal on the rest, so I'm hoping it won't be too bad. My main priority is photos - if you can't see them in photos, I won't mind so much because really who's going to remember in detail what my teeth look like!

Now begins the countdown of eating all of my favourite 'staining' foods...curry, beetroot, lots of red wine...

Oops...haven't posted in a while and I guess a bit has happened!

Well I got my top ceramic braces on and wow did they hurt! Just in the first few days but it was back to soft foods and lots of junk food...very bold! I definitely haven't been seeing the weight loss benefits that some people on here have seen but then it might be down to the amount of ice cream I've been eating :D Since then wow - my left front tooth no longer sits on top of my right front tooth, and even my canines have stepped back and look less like fangs, which was what I was the most self-conscious about. So I'm delighted all round!! :-*

I was meant to then go back for my next adjustment 7 weeks later but I had a wedding last Saturday and my ligs were getting a little tea-stained so I called my ortho and they fitted me in a week early...love them! So that was last Friday...most of the ligs on the front 6 on top weren't on fully so they were 'engaged' last week and even since the change is unreal. The bottoms weren't touched but they've been behaving themselves pretty well so that was ok. I dont go back now for 2 months which is my longer between time yet, but my ortho said that by then my teeth should be straightened completely and it should be 'plain sailing' from then on...not sure what that means but it sounds good to me! So now I'm just sitting back and watching my teeth all line up. I'll put some pics up later...actually really proud to show them off and see what people think!

Also have to say - at the wedding it was so strange - it was a couple I knew from college and I hadn't seen anyone in so long but damn did I show off my metal mouth! I thought I'd be so self conscious about them but I think with all the improvements lately I was just so happy and kept smiling all the time...even big smiles in photos which I NEVER do. So once again, getting these bad boys is the best decision ever and anyone wondering or worried about it... don't be - do is ASAP because these little metal things are miracle workers! :-**

For the first time in 5 months...I am completely fed up of my braces! I don't know what it is...before i used to look in the mirror and be really excited about how much they have moved...now they just annoy me and gross me out whenever I see them. I think it's because I had sooo much progress so quickly and it's completely slowed down. :-+ Ugh i just want to be done and I have at least another full year to go!

Please tell me this is temporary and I'll get over it!

Definitely temporary! You've made so much progress in less than 5 months. It's just like weight loss - you'll hit a plateau eventually. Things will start moving again soon

Thanks Krystal! I really hope they start moving again soon...I have 6 more weeks before my next adjustment and can't help feeling its a waste of 6 weeks! Kind of happy my bite is messed up now because otherwise I'd be so tempted just to get them off!

I can't really complain though - its completely voluntary and I'll hopefully have a great smile at the end of it...its just the middle bit that sucks!

Well I'm over my rant of 'I want them off'! I was out at the weekend and loads of people were taking photos and I was happy to give them a big grin as I'm really proud of my straighter teeth now so I kind of realised I was being a baby and that these things on my teeth are awesome...smile with pride!! :-*

On the downside, I have a super bad pokey wire on my lower right side. It just came out of nowhere! Back to wax I guess...

Had my first clean with the dental hygenist while in braces and she gave me an A+! I hadn't seen my dentist since I made the move to braces - he's a family friend so I was really excited to show him my teeth. I made a big smile when i went into the office and he didnt react at all...I even pointed at my teeth but my mum had already told him so he wasn't too shocked. Still, he said that they're looking really good and moving along quickly so that made my day!

I think I'm finally at that 'acceptance' stage of my braces. They're no longer that big a deal...I mean I still stare at them every day willing them to do more work but I'm in the nice relaxed stage where there isn't much pain and I haven't got elastics yet so it's not too crowded in there. Thinking I'll probably get elastics at my next adjustment so maybe I should just enjoy the quiet time!

Just had another adjustment this weekend and got a major shocker!

I don't usually ask many questions in my ortho's office...I just hop into the chair, let her do her thing and hop back out. I know loads of people on here know exactly what's next in their treatment but I just kind of figured that I had so much longer to go and I'd start asking questions closer to my deband time. Well...maybe I should have had a bit more interest...

So I'm in the chair and my ortho is doing her thing - she always talks me through what's she's doing but a lot of it doesn't make much sense to me, wire sizes and all that - and then she tells me that she's putting in my final wire! I was so shocked and completely forgot her hands were in my mouth and tried to say 'Weally?!?!'. Then when it was all finished she told me to come back mid January but she'd only be changing the wire of the uppers, then the lowers should be ready to come off by Paddy's Day (March 17th to the non-Irish)!  I was beyond shocked...I think I even made a high pitched 'What?!' noise that only dogs could hear. Then she added that the uppers probably wouldn't be ready then but soon after. I think I stopped listening at that stage and just kept saying 'Amazing' and 'Thank You'...she probably thought I had lost it! I left then and it didn't really sink in until I sat in the car...in 4-6 months time I might be debraced! I still don't really believe it!

Once I got over the shock, panic stepped in. I think there's so much left to do to my uppers I can't believe they could be ready in 6 months time. I'm not looking for completely perfect - other orthos said I would have to lose 4 pre-molars and my amazing ortho has done everything to avoid this so I understand that perfection may not be achievable but right now there are still teeth to be rotated and gaps to close. She says this wire should widen my smile and then she can pull back my front teeth a bit with the space. And I trust her. So it's positive thinking from now on and I am going to be the ideal patient!

Not back until mid January but might pop in before the Christmas season to change out the clear ligs...

I'll try to post pics later - I haven't really taken many progress pics after the 1st two months but you'll be able to see what I mean about not being ready yet!

Well its coming close to St. Paddy's Day and surprise surprise there is no sign of me being debraced  It's not too bad...it would have been amazing but I kind of knew that 10 months early was too good to be true! We're not that far off yet though...I hope!

The latest in my bracing story is that my bite is all wonky. It was all going well until about a month ago when something happened and I could no longer find my bite. It was like magic! One day it's fine but I'm worried about a bit of an overjet, the next day my bite is gone and I have no overjet. I said this to my ortho on Friday and apparently I have 2 bites - my 'back' bite where my molars hit, and my 'front' bite where everything hits a bit better but my jaw feels strangely forward. I initially thought it was because my lower canine on my right side was much higher than the rest of my teeth so I figured it was hitting weird. So my ortho put in a strong flexible wire on top of the bracket on that tooth to push it down. It's now pushed down so we can see my bite a bit better...but the news is not good. To me (with zero ortho experience!) it looks like my lower arch needs to be widened a bit...and my ortho did mention dreaded elastics!! I head back in on Wednesday morning so we'll see then

I have no problem wearing elastics but I was really looking forward to the last stretch so I'm a bit upset now that this journey may go on for a few more months! My ortho even said 'you're in no rush to finish really, are you?!' Em..YES!! Getting it right is my first priority but I deffo want these babies off before my holiday in May...so fingers crossed it's not too difficult a fix.

Will update on Wednesday...wish me luck!!

Hi Elaine,

Sorry to hear that the final tweaks are taking longer than you'd hoped (or been led to expect). My dentist recommended I take the ortho's program with a pinch of salt and think of the 18 months as two years, then I'd be happy when they came off. Of course, me being a pessimistic old fogey, I'm thinking, "Yeh, but when the braces come off, the retainers go in and they're for life." So I'm not in any hurry to finish the active part of the treatment - especially when the promised retainers are permanent (i.e. continued flossing nightmare) _and_ a removable set with a platform so as my deep bite doesn't return. Like I _so_ enjoyed having the turbos in, I've signed up for another daffy duck speech pattern.

Hmm. Rant over - bad elastics day but I shouldn't whine so much, one of the kids at youth group had their brace fitted last week and it looks like a Sherman tank's parked in there.
D.

Thanks Duncan - yeah I knew I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up but it's impossible not too when you hear 'they should be off by Paddy's Day!' oh well...it's kind of been good in a way because it's made me realise there is NO WAY these things are coming off until I am 100% happy.

Update from Wednesday is not much. It was a super quick appointment because they just slotted me in to readjust a bracket. Which was kind of good because it's now given me the time to look at my bite and my face and figure out where my jaw feels most comfortable for me. My back bite is definitely the right position but I'm pretty sure this will mean elastics because my molars only hit on my right side and not very well on my left  But that's ok - I don't mind elastics. It also means I'll probably have an overjet of about 3-4mm...I need to ask about this...

The main thing I'm worried about now is that I'M the one that's figuring out where my bite should be - not my ortho! Has anyone else experienced this? My next adjustment is in 3 weeks so I'm going to sit down and ask her all my questions - I usually don't ask anything but it's started to stress me out now as I don't know what's ahead...so I need to be proactive!

Bring on 3 weeks!!! :jump:
