I'm new here and I'm going to get 6-month braces in an hour. Reading this makes me less nervous thanks for posting your stories.
Re: Six Month Braces UK - 42 F
I can so relate to this! I'm nine months in and eagerly look forward to an adjustment just so that I can be reminded I'm wearing braces again. Give it a couple of months and you will completely forget you have them.DaisySmith wrote:Day 36 - 24th Feb
I used to hungrily devour braces diaries, eagerly monitoring progress reports, changes in pain, soreness etc and if there were gaps in people's stories I used to find it frustrating and want to know why. Now I know why. There's simply nothing to tell, or nothing you think is worth sharing.
Progress: about the same as the other day
Discomfort: about the same
Life in braces: about the same as it has been for a while.
See?
Life in braces is fine. Sometimes food gets stuck in them so that's a bit annoying. Sometimes the brackets rub a bit causing a little bit of soreness but nothing so bad that I need to take tablets. Sometimes, I lisp a little bit. I don't dribble any more. It's all just fine really but I can definitely see progress and I LOVE that.

NeilH - I honestly never would have imagined how my feelings about my braces could have changed so much. They were SO uncomfortable to start with that I didn't believe it would have been possible to enjoy life with them in but you really do get used to them. I'm looking forward to my next adjustment simply because it means my teeth will start moving again, I mean ultimately I want this journey over so I can have great(ish) teeth! Anyway, thanks for replying and hope your time flies too.

Day 50 - 10th March
About six days ago I got a big chunk of inside top lip caught inside a bracket. I Instinctively tried to wrench it free and tore my skin. It bloody hurt! It's finally healed up and is no longer sore. That aside I mostly don't think about my braces at all. I can see my teeth have moved, albeit slowly but then again it's not even been two months yet so I don't expect the job to be nearly done or anything. Next tightening in a fortnight and I'm looking forward to it. Only that it marks another milestone in my journey. Occasionally I feel a throb of tension in my teeth which reminds me my teeth are being pulled, other than that I barely feel any tension from my braces at all.
Met my best friend for Pizza the other week. Had a Pizza Leggara in Pizza Express. Got chicken and base and rocket all woven around my brackets. Was the messiest meal I have eaten since braces and of course had nothing with me to pick it all out. My tongue got an extensive workout at the table for a good twenty minutes afterwards!

Re: Six Month Braces UK - 42 F
Day 63 - 23rd March.
So last Tuesday I went for my second adjustment. This was slightly uncomfortable in terms of pressure. My dentist told me in the next four weeks he expects all the gaps in the top front six teeth be closed. I'm so excited about this especially as one of my lateral incisors still needs to drop down a couple of mm's although I suppose that might be part of a later process. I've still got gaps behind both upper canines but I've always known they were going to take the whole duration to close up.
I was going to post a progress picture but it doesn't look any different to the last picture I've posted even though I have seen some movement in 'real life'. Anyway I woke up on Thursday and discovered I was minus a bracket on the last pre-molar up top. The irony being that only two days before at my appointment, the dental nurse expressed her surprise that I hadn't lost one so far! Anyway they offered me an appointment for Monday in fairness which I couldn't do because of important work commitments so I'm having to wait until Wednesday. Annoying that it's on a tooth next to a big gap to close! Maybe he can put some more tension on it to catch up?
Anyway, Sunday night now and bitiing into food is getting easier again. Aside from having a nice looking smile, not having sore teeth on a regular basis is something I am looking forward to when all this is over!

Day 66 - March 26th
Went along to have a new bracket stuck back on. My dentist said he was using a stronger glue as once a bracket has come off they're more likely to come off again. He also said my bottom teeth are moving really quickly and while I was there he was going to take the opportunity to tighten up around one of my bottom teeth. My next appointment is in three weeks and the way he's talking I wouldn't be surprised if my lower braces came off then.He actually used the phrase "almost done" when referring to my bottom set and it's only been just over two months.
I reminded him he originally advised me I'd be looking at seven or eight months for the entire treatment time. He said today it would be less than that but always likes to give himself a bit of leeway. When the braces do come off, I'm going to need some contouring on uneven edges and the lateral incisor I'd hoped would drop down is pretty much as far as it's going to get but he has said he might build it up afterwards depending if he thinks it needs it. My teeth will be getting whitened too so overall I'm hoping to feel like It's been money well spent when I look in the mirror.
I always knew that I didn't have Hollywood shaped teeth to start with and that's not what I'm going to end up with, unless I have veneers which I don't want. So it's a case of making the most of my natural teeth. Anyway, to think I could have one less set to be picking salad out of on a daily basis, in three weeks time, is very exciting!

Day 75 - 4th April
Can't stop staring at my teeth. Every day I'm checking out the gaps behind my canines and watching them shrink. I can also feel them getting smaller because the tip of my tongue barely gets any access! So pleased in some ways and disappointed in others. The more the gaps close up and the nearer my teeth edge towards their final resting place, the more obvious the imperfections in the actual shape of my teeth appear.
However I am slowly coming to terms (as I said in my previous post) that I am not going to end up with a perfect looking smile. I think I fantasised that braces and whitening alone were going to give me a brochure smile. However, until I've had the contouring and whitening and actually seen my teeth with my braces off I can't assess how they're going to look anyway.
Two weeks until next adjustment. If my lowers did come off, surely I'd have to get the contouring done that day too, in order to get moulds make for my retainer. ( Thinking out loud...)
My braces don't even bother me now. I am so used to them. Might even miss them.
Did I say that... ?

I am loving your braces journal! Even with all the pain, you still manage to be hilarious. And who needs a Hollywood smile? You sound like you feel great, and you should be proud of yourself for all your personal progress. I'm sure you will look amazing!

Day 87 - 16th April
In and out in under ten minutes. Had the little bands around each bracket changed, as they do at every appointment and had my wires tightened. Didn't remove my bottom set as I thought might happen. I think the 'nearly there' comment from last time was simply a positive remark not to be taken too literally. Anyway, I'm so used to these things now that their residence in my mouth is of little significance. In fact I said to my dentist 'Don't let me ask any questions today, I've just to rush straight home to host an international conference call for work.'
Just before I raced out of the door, one eye on the clock, he said 'We're ahead of schedule, I'll be putting the final wire in next month. I think we'll be finished by the end of June.' He originally estimated seven or eight months, which during the first few days of wearing these things I thought was a horrifying prospect. This however would mean my journey will have lasted just over five months which would have certainly calmed my hysteria in the beginning!
Anyway, we're getting there... Have the usual post-tightening headache. You know, like I've head butted a coffee table but I know it will be better by the morning.

I have been reading through your story as I am on day 2 of my own six month braces.... I've been in agony all day, but you have given me hope it does get better... Can't wait to read more & be inspired by your progress & positivity (it actually hurt me as I laughed reading through your journey!)
Re: Six Month Braces UK - 42 F

Re: Six Month Braces UK - 42 F
(Yawn) I don't count anymore. Last appointment eight days ago involved some enthusiastic 'oohing' noises and the announcement we have reached the 'fine tuning' phase. Oh, really? I am due to return next week for another fine tune then to return again in a further two weeks and we SHOULD be finally finished ALL within his initial projected completion time of 8 months. - he keeps reminding me of this smugly, like he's very clever and I should be very grateful. (We'll ignore the countless 'nearly there's' in between times then!)
I won't be holding my breath but bloody hell I am so looking forward to getting these things off. No more ulcers and lisping and picking salad out of them! Straight looking teeth will just be an extra bonus!
