The start of my braces journey!

#1 Post by blahhh123 »

Hi I'm a newcomer to this web and I think this would be a great way to record the journey of getting braces. My teeth has been crooked ever since my two permanent front tooth arrived, and now I can get braces soon! (Not sure whether to be excited or not haha) My orthodontist already took molds and x rays of my teeth months ago and yesterday they came up with the treatment plan and told us.

The orthodontist told me other than teeth crowded there isn't any other major problem with my bite. However, they said my jaw was naturally grown to tilt to one side of my face, so my teeth in the bottom jaw had also tilted to the same side, which caused the centre of the top and bottom jaw to not match. They said this is actually quite common (has anyone else have this problem?) They said it was only a bit and not all human have a perfectly symmetrical face, so it was up to us whether to have a jaw surgery or not. Before they said that I didn't notice, and neither did anyone around me, plus a surgery sounded very scary :S So we just decided to proceed. So the orthodontist told us in this case, unlike normal people (2 or 4 tooth extracted) I would be recommended to have 3 teeth removed instead so that my teeth would be less tilted to a side (I don't know how it works haha)

Other than braces, the orthodontist said something called a nance button would have to be put in my mouth before the extraction of my teeth, in order to stop my molars from shifting forward. The nance doesn't look too bad according to images, but I've heard that there is pain and difficulties in speaking after getting it. Hope I would get used to these problems soon! We made our next appointment a month later on the 3rd of June, where I would have to get my nance and molar bands fitted through four appointments in the same month. A bit nervous now...... Anyone have experiences with a nance button before? How does it feel and would I have to wear it until my 2 year braces end? Getting braces in late august.

No humans have a perfectly symmetrical face. That would look weird. Have you ever tried duplicating half of your face to match the other? You look...not human! :P

I was borderline for surgery and I let my ortho talk me into it. I wonder every day if that was the right decision. You're smart to avoid it if it's not absolutely necessary.

I can't help with the nance, but good luck with your braces! I'm sure your teeth will turn out lovely!

I just got rid of my Nance yesterday after 7 months. Honestly, the thing sucked. Take solace that it does come out when not needed any longer. Speech is affected at first and your mouth is super dry. Get yourself some breath spray. Your speech will come around, but when my mouth would get really dry or I was really tired I'd struggle. Like I had to speak more forcefully to get words out. The biggest hassle was cleaning it. Just use an interdental brush and rinse. They try to tell you to floss under it, but that's nearly impossible. Buckle down and power through. You'll feel like a million bucks when it comes out!
