Looks so painful! You seem to be doing great.

Your teeth look really good to start from! I'm looking forward to following your progress!

Well, the holes are pretty much healed up now. I'm not even getting food caught in them usually.

The tooth fairy persuaded my parents to help me move into my new house, which was very helpful indeed! Still unpacking, but mostly done.

Today I saw the dentist for my 6 month cleaning an exam. I asked if I got a discount since I have fewer teeth, but he ignored me. The good news is that I have NO CAVITIES!!!
Image

I am officially cleared for braces. Good thing, too, since I would have had a hard time fitting in an appointment for fillings between now and getting braced.

Speaking of getting braced... It's coming! Just one more day of freedom. This afternoon I went out and bought butterfingers, baby ruths, skittles, and twizzlers. Then I went to panera bread and got a big sandwich on crusty bread and a bagel for tomorrow morning. I've got all day tomorrow to enjoy the sticky, hard, and chewy candy. My dad was helpful enough to offer to take any extra off my hands.

Image Image Image Image

I'm definitely excited, although a bit nervous too, just because it's the unknown.
Image

The funniest thing that I heard at the dentist's office today... I told the hygenist that she had better do a good job, since this was the last time in three years that they were going to have this opportunity, she got this horrified look on her face and started lecturing me about how it's important to come in for cleanings when you have braces on... She thought I wasn't planning on coming back to the dentist until after I got my braces off! Image I just meant that it was her last chance to clean my teeth with full, unobstructed access. I calmed her down eventually.

Ewwww, Cowlypso! I have to have the same top two teeth out. :GapToothed: It is so shocking how short the roots are----you would think those things would be more "anchoring"---guess that's how teeth get knocked out fairly easily.

I have already had six teeth out previously (2 lower at 9, 4 wisdom at 18) but I still had forgotten about the gauze packing and being numb and droolie. :yuck: Hey, I wonder where those teeth are anyway? I bet my mom has them---she keeps everything.

You're a real trooper! Glad you are healing nicely and getting ready for your next installment.

The Last Supper Image

Well, I'm actually feeling rather pitiful at the moment, because I had a pretty hard time coming up with anything really good and off-limits to eat on my last night free. Plus, no real motivation to cook. So I came up with a toasted bagel, a whole apple, and steamed brocolli (nice and crunchy). Added on a veggie patty for some protein. Maybe not the most exciting meal ever, but full of crunchy, chewy, hard-to-eat stuff.

Image

Tomorrow morning I go for it. Bright and early (8:50 am). Then, I'm off to show them to the world (or at least a few people). First stop is the blood drive at the credit union, which will include my first-ever dining experience with braces (which will, just for fun, be public). Then, it's off to the post office. I think I've waited long enough to mail my friend's Christmas present.
Image

Then I think I'll come home and hide in my basement. Not really because I'll need to hide, but because I've still got about ten boxes down here to unpack from moving two weeks ago. It's a mess.

Oh, but don't worry.... Before I start unpacking, I'll be sure to take some photos of my new look and put them up here. :computer:

I'm Braced!!! (Or at least, I'm bracketed...)

Didn't sleep very well last night for some reason. Oh well. Dragged myself out of bed at 7:55 this morning and had some oatmeal for breakfast. (Yes, I know.... My last normal meal before braces and I have oatmeal...) Brushed my teeth quickly and headed out the door.
Image

Wrote out my huge check, which hurt a little bit. But the good news is that I am now PAID IN FULL. Yay!

Headed on back to the chair and settled in for the marathon. The sun was shining, birds were chirping (well, I couldn't hear any birds, but the sun was shining...). Here's the view from the chair:

Image

I actually took that picture by accident, because the assistant was having some trouble figuring out my camera and I was showing her how.

Got a few pictures snapped and then we got started. The lip retractors weren't that bad at all, actually. I think that was what I was most afraid of. But they were pretty comfy. I had one spot that poked a little, but she fixed it.

First she p*o*lished my teeth, then she did the etchant and rinsed. Then the sealant. Here's a progress pic while we were waiting for the ortho:

Image

Beautiful, huh? The ortho was very careful and took lots of time putting the brackets all on one by one. He positioned them very carefully and got all the extra glue off. After he got them all on, he left me with the assistant and her inside-of-the-mouth-tanning-device. We bonded for a while, then she declared me done. I got to go rinse with some water to unglue my tongue from the roof of my mouth. Ah.... Never has water been so good!
Image

My first impressions...
-Wow, these are sharp!
-The brackets are a lot smaller than I expected
-The ones on the front teeth are a lot further down from the gumline than I expected... my lips don't actually touch the two on my central incisors at all unless I make an effort to close my mouth
-I can probably live with this... (Let's hope so!)

Then we just had a few more tasks...

I got my ligs. I stayed with the dark purple that I had picked out at the final consultation. Those went on pretty fast. I didn't notice that they made that much of a difference in comfort. Maybe the archwires will make things less pointy around the brackets.

I got my spacers. I've decided that my spacers are not going to cause me any pain because with my extractions, I have plenty of room in my mouth. (We'll see how well that works out...) The assistant had a heck of a time getting the dang things in. She nearly ripped my head off shoving them down. She mentioned that I have some "tight" contacts. Hmm.... perhaps. The spacers feel very funny, because they are sticking up a bit, so when I bite down, it's like my top and bottom jaw are playing bumper cars with each other. (bouncy, bouncy, bouncy....)
Image

I've noticed that my upper lip has been getting hung up on the little hooks on my canine brackets. I guess they'll need to practice more. But overall I think I'm okay. I'll definitely need some wax on the front lower brackets, though. I'm off to play with that as soon as I finish posting here!

So here are the official pics:

Oh, and I even survived eating in public... After getting my brackets, I gave blood, then sat down to have my cookie and juice. I broke the cookie up into tiny pieces and chewed in the back. My only problem was that I kept thinking I had cookie stuck in/to my teeth, but it was just the brackets... I guess I'll get used to that.

Way to go Cowlypso! Glad it all went well, the purple ligs look great!

I laughed when I saw your last meal pic. I tried to order takeaway curry for my last meal (now banned as mine are ceramic) but because it was new year's day, everything was shut! I nearly cried!

Still, now I've realised that getting braces isn't such an ordeal I'm less bothered. I've been eating normally so am not as hungry as I thought I would be!

Hope your mouth stays pain free, keep us posted on getting your archwires!

Love the ligs cowlypso. I promise that archwire will make the brackets a lot smoother and not so sharp. I had to deal with brackets without archwires as well. I got the tops first and then a couple months later I got the bottoms. Had to deal with the tops for 3 weeks and the bottoms for 4 weeks with no archwires. It's very pokey and can be a bit rough. Wax is definately your best friend. Hope those spacers don't cause you any pain. CONGRATS ON YOUR BRACKETS!

Congrats!

Your approach toward your orthodontic journey is refreshing and your smile will be exquisite when completed. I think you picked a great color, dark purple, the color of royalty for your first ligs.

We all look forward to sharing the joys of your journey through your posts. Keep smiling, your first hurdles are in your rearview mirror.
