I am going to be a sophomore in college and got braces in August just before my freshman year. Its always exciting to find others my age who are going through the same thing! You're lucky to have someone live next to you going through it as well.
I was also really worried about what other people would say, especially with meeting new people at college. It hasn't been as bad as I thought. Most people who do say anything are just curious about them, like when they're coming off. I'm usually just paranoid and expect the worst.
I've also actually noticed about 20 or so other students on campus who have braces.
Anyways, congrats on your decision! I can't wait to see more updates (I should probably start my own story thread one of these days).

I'm almost three months in now though and so far so good!
A lot of people are just impressed that I'm taking the initiative to do something good for myself!
As for the whole braces 'look'.. it takes some getting used to
I'm 22 but I officially look like I'm around 16 now.. it's kind of fun
Also, I have ceramics and no problems yet (in reference to your dream of them popping off
). Can't wait to hear more of your story in the coming months!

Braced since June 3rd, 2008
Hey all!
The countdown is finally coming closer to the end! I'm so excited for wednesday, I don't care how nerdy I sound at this point. I know spacers are going to be painful and annoying, but its one giant step closer to the braces day! I'm excited. So yes, Wednesday at 9 a.m. I will officially have spacers. And will be getting x-rays, molds, etc. Can't wait! I'll post pics of the spacers, even though they aren't nearly as exciting as the actual braces. Yay!

Well, I'm officially on the road to braces. I've got my spacers in. Let me tell you, they hurt like a (expletive lol) going in. Apparently it was super tight so some of them they had to do the "old fashion" way by flossing them in... AHH. But, all is well now. It's just a bit sore, nothing bad though. Mostly just pressure and the annoying sensation that I have food stuck in my teeth. I'll have to spacers for two weeks, and then my next appointment, the 24th, I'm getting the top braces on. I guess they're not putting the bottoms on yet cause of the overbite... slightly annoying, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Hi . .! Yay we can be braces buddies, we have so much in common!
-I just got my spacers put on last night. My experience is MISERABLE. You're so lucky yours don't hurt too bad. I'm DYING.
-I'm a professional photographer
-A lot of my family is from Tennessee; my parents went to UT and my grandparents on both sides live there now.
My actual braces day is on Monday - yikes!

LOL! Advil is my bff too. Last night, Vicodin was.
Today is a little better for me - more of a dull ache than the HOLY CRAP MY TEETH ARE GOING TO CRACK AND FALL OUT OF MY SKULL feeling from yesterday. Eating dinner last night was NOT EASY.
I'm a Nikon girl.
How did you know I'm an Obama fan??? Did I post that somewhere? We'll put it this way - I love him even more now that creepy Sarah Palin is in the picture.

I'll help hijack this thread.....
I'm a Canon fan although if I did it again, I'm not sure.
Awww, spacers. Spacers are a test of will (will the pain ever end) for some. For others they're not an issue. They do make the fitting of molar bands much easier. My best advice is to use warm salt water rinses as well as chewing. It seems weird but giving your mouth a rest is one of the worst things you can do. Chewing stimulates blood flow which stimulates heeling.
Good luck.....it WILL get better.

I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.

Well there's one difference
I'm a Canon girl. But no worries! I have lots of Nikon friends. We just give eachother hassle (jokingly). The Obama thing was on your profile.
iBorg--thanks for the advice on chewing. I honestly thought giving them a rest would be better.
The ortho gave me the strangest little apparatus. It's a bubble gum flavored, almost retainer shaped piece of flat plastic/rubber. It's to chew on instead of chewing gum. I don't get it. lol. i mean, i guess it's cool. anybody else had one of these?
Current pain level: a dull ache. Probably not even ache, just pressure. I couldn't chew earlier today, it hurt so bad. But I'm about to try gnawing on an apple fritter (delicious!) to see how that goes.
I'm just ready to get these suckers out of my mouth. The annoying thing is that I think the bottom ones are going to be in for quite a while, because I'm only getting the top braces at my next appointment. I'm also not sure why I have to have the spacers for 2 full weeks. I've only heard of a week or less. We'll see. It's probably better anyway cause apparently my molars were pretty crowded. Also--I don't have any wisdom teeth, nor signs of them. Anybody else like me in that department?

The chew toy is called many things(sorry I didn't have one) normally a bite wafer. What its is used for is to stimulate blood flow. Some orthos will recommend sugar free gum, some bite wafers and others just wish you well. Use it to help your teeth settle down. The reason for two weeks may be because of your orthos schedule or because your teeth were so tightly spaced. Trust me..... spacers are a pure pain but also a wonderful thing. My first time in braces, about the year you were born, my first ortho (hopefully suffering bad things) pounded the bands on all of my teeth with a hammer type device. Some didn't fit which made the experience even worse. Spacers would have saved SOOOO much pain. I would ask your ortho about the bottom spacers. I'll call ASAP. It might be a mistake or he plans on putting molar bands on both arches at the same time. Did he mention anything about other appliances? That could be the reason also, but I would anticipate he would have made you aware of them prior to now.

Well, my teeth are hurting less, except when I eat. it KILLS. I'm just ready for the next step... a week and a half. I think I can make it.
The only thing that's really bothering me, besides the pain, is the fact that I'm pretty sure my teeth are visibly getting worse because of the spacers. I think they're crowding my front teeth. hopefully that doesn't last too long.
ahhhh i just want my braces :-\
