Chelsea, So sorry to hear about your insurance / funding dilemma. We all know how badly you want and need this. :( Sorry too, that you're not getting the support you need at home.

Good luck working all this out. I sure hope the right solution presents itself 8) and that you won't have to end your treatment prematurely.

I dont think anyone knows how much I wanted this. Im hoping OSU will atleast let me get retainers so I can retain the smile I have now.

Ive wanted this all my life. I wanted to get married with a beautiful smile, graduate college with a beautiful smile, all those moments. And now when its in my hands, its gone. Im devastated.

Thank you for all the support.

Just keep in mind that even if things don't work out now, that won't prevent you from getting braces later on. You won't always be at the mercy of your parents.

Hang in there!
I had my braces on for 2 years, 1 month, 2 weeks and 2 days.

I was REALLY scared to get my premolars pulled, (even AFTER my totally routine and uncomplicated extraction of 4 wisdom teeth!) so it took me months to get from my consultation to brace day. But I remember the only reason I finally went through with my extractions because my orthodontist kept calling me, asking me when we could start treatment. As best I can remember, this is how it went:

MARCH 2008: initial consultation, decided which teeth to pull
APRIL 2008: second consultation, planned to brace me in May
MAY 2008: avoided the ortho at all costs, ignored calls, made excuses
JUNE 2008: told ortho I couldn't get extractions because I thought I had a cavity, went to dentist and got teeth cleaned, turned out it wasn't a cavity
JULY 2008: got teeth extracted. took 20 minutes. it was like... the easiest thing ever. my doctor was so cool (she was like 25, blonde, 5 feet tall, and surprisingly- REALLY REALLY good at pulling teeth!) I had to go to her (she was a maxillofacial surgery student, like 2 days from graduation. I had to go to her cuz I have wonky crooked roots.)
AUGUST 2008: records appointment, finally got braced.

As I recall, however, if I hadn't needed strange, asymmetric extractions they would have braced me in April.

OSU is really cool. The students are learning all the latest stuff and they're always doing surveys and studies. It's awesome!

I called the OSU thing and they cant treat me with my current braces on. So I have to have my Ortho remove them and then if I decide to be treated by OSU, I can go in and recieve treatment again.

I have to call my Ortho and cancel my treatment still. Im scared because I dont want to be stick with a bill for treatment Im not recieving. Like my insurance has only paid for appliances and treatment ive ALREADY recieved, but im afraid that even though my insurance paid for appointments ive went to, that my Ortho will make me pay the rest. I cant do that, I dont have the money. And why should I pay for treatment Im never going to recieve?

This is a mess. Im driving myself into financial hell. I cant do this.

I dont even know if I can pay for retainers. :/

At the VERY least you need to find out a way to get the braces off... If you keep them on for months with out any adjustments or cleanings, it could damage your teeth. :(

What kills me is the fact that I need my wisdom teeth removed, and my canine exposed.

Im currently dropping out of my current 4-year college, due to lack of support from parents and financial funds. I cant keep taking out student loans every year. Im moving out of my parents house and moving in with my very supportive Aunt and Uncle. My Aunt is making calls for me tomorrow regarding my insurance. She works in the medical field. And Im struggling between whether or not I should transfer to a much much cheaper 4-year college, or go to a technical school to be a dental assistant. (im pretty jaded at the moment). Im having a mid-life crisis at 19. Joy.

I cant believe all of this is coming to an end so soon. Im determined enough to get them in the future, I just, I hate the way this is going. Im calling my Ortho tomorrow. Wish me luck. Lets hope Im not in debt with him for treatment that I wont recieve from him.

Chelsea
Please don't drop out of school it is so important it's really hard to go back the longer you stay out. I start at a university and realized wow, it was nothing like high school i didn't do so well other and things that were going on at home weren't helping. so I stopped and then went to a community college. I took the same classes for a whole heck of a lot less and raised that GPA up. You should look into a community college. That is my advice to everyone start there it's way more affordable and then after two years sans the braces go to a university.

Also my brother had braces and stopped his treatment because he and my parents couldn't aford when he was younger and he stayed with the brace on and would try taking them off with a fork he went years with just having the brackets on until not too long ago he ran into a dentist and she felt bad for him and took them off for free. I think it's all about meeting the right people who are not just thinking about Money. I am sure in your case someone has to have a heart for you.

I am so sorry about your parents maybe you should consider finacial aid, thats whats getting me through school its there for a reason. Once your 23 you won't be an independent and finacial things liek that will revolove around your income and not your parents.

Hang in there I sure there's a light at the end of the tunnel don't loose hope. I can gaurantee you that you will be getting some good new soon I just know it. :)

Thank you Cosmo.

I also called my Ortho. The good news is that I do not owe them any money, and they are taking my braces off for free. the only way I would owe money is if I started self payment, and I told them I couldnt do that. I asked if there was anyway I could retainers because my teeth would shift into worse alignment. And she said that my teeth will move, and they could go into worse alignment. And she said she would ask the Ortho if I would benefit from retainers, and he said no that I wouldnt benefit from any type of retainers. Thats the bad news.

Im scared. I dont want my teeth to shift. I seen what happened to my friends teeth after 2 years in braces when they didnt wear retainers. Imagine what mine would look like.

I called OSU back today and I talked to a lady and she said that I am entitled to a retainer under my agreement with my Ortho and that I shouldnt be refused a retainer because I want to further my treatment at a later date when Im more financially stable. And she said that thats absurd that he said that I wouldnt benefit from a retainer because she said my teeth will shift and that its not healthy to let that happen, and it would just make my future treatment more complicated. And I told her that my Ortho wouldnt make retainers for me. She told me to bring it up at my debonding date. But she said that its $225 dollars each for retainers at OSU. So she asked if I would like to make a free consultation with one of the Ortho's and I said yes. She said it was the best decision because they can tell me which path to go on. So hopefully Ill be able to get some retainers from OSU. She said its a strange case and that its a tricky situation because if another Ortho gets involved with my current Ortho it could be messy.

I just need to make $225.
