17th Adjustment (9/7/11)

Let’s see if I can keep this month’s blog to 1,000 words or less…

One of the most uneventful adjustments I’ve had so far. No wire changes (he just added a pretty big “kink” in my lower wire to help rotate my lower-left lateral incisor I complained about on here, but hadn't ever mentioned to him. He saw it himself.); no elastics configuration changes (although he did allow me to go back to my old brand of Jaguar elastics because the last bunch he gave me snapped every two hours, no matter how much or little I moved my mouth). I told him that sometimes “cheaper/bulk shopping is not always better”. (What a smartass I can be…)

He said my teeth were looking “really good” (I somewhat disagree), and that next month we would change the elastics configuration. He didn’t say which he would change it to, but the way he motioned, it looked like Class II again. If he does that, I will have to remind him that every time he switches me back to that, it ends up pulling all of my teeth UP again (the ones we’ve worked for months to bring DOWN… and that still aren’t DOWN enough). Oh well… back in another 4 weeks.

Here’s my usual pic (No lipstick – sorry. And for some reason, I tilted my head slightly, so my teeth look a little more crooked than they actually are. I was too lazy to take another pic. Tilt your head to the right to look at it. LOL!)

Image

Kinda bummed that I have all these little gaps (“pepper flakes”), because I’m going to Vegas next week and will be meeting and taking a photo with Donny and Marie. Let’s hope it’s from a good distance away. Two of the most beautiful smiles in the world… and ME in between! Kinda like a “before” and “after” for braces, huh? :D

-Cathy

P.S. I have no idea how many words this is, but it's still shorter than my usual story.

Donny and Marie!! Loved him! Takes me back to being a child in the seventies - have a fabulous time!
Your teeth are looking really good - and I wanted to ask you - do you still think that your profile is better from having the braces? You know you mentioned that you felt your chin profile had improved and you hadn't lost weight?

Hey libbylou

Sorry for the delay in responding. I just got back from Vegas last night. Donny and Marie were FABULOUS!!! Consummate performers, and truly one of the most entertaining shows I've ever seen. (This is what i think my face looked like when they came out on stage:  ) They're also very kind and attentive to their fans. Mama and Papa Osmond raised them right. The meet-and-greet afterward was very quick, but great, nonetheless. Donny asked me if he could come live in Honolulu, too. :D :D :D Took lots of pics, too. It was truly a dream come true. And never was I happier with my decision to get ceramic braces, than when I saw those pics. Can't see them, AT ALL! I took a couple other pics close-up at my table, and you can barely even see the wire. Even the photographer commented, "Can't even see the braces."

Anyway, back to your question. I don't really notice it in my profile (though to be honest, I don't look at my profile much), but I do notice it in my chin area, and the change is for the better. I think it's something that only I notice, though.

hello. I love the way your smile looks. Its sad that people don't agree with you getting braces. I unfortunately haven't had that problem. My teeth have been bad as soon as they came in. I have had braces for 4 years and 1 month. They are coming off tomorrow! I know I have felt bad when people get braces and dont need then. Your overbite could obviously cause problems and is unsitely to you. My family has had different views on braaces I'm sure, I am the only one in my family(mom and dad's side) that has had braces. GLAD I HAVE! :P

Hi Cathy - oh I am GREEN with envy reading about you meeting Donny and Marie! Sounds like you had an amazing time. Wish you could post the pictures, but you would have to chop off half your heads wouldn't you to pass the board rules????? Am kind of with him too on the living in Honolulu thing!

Bet the photos are fab - those Radiance brackets look so pretty. Definitely the ones I am going to go for when I get braced. I go back to the orthodontist with my daughter next week for her adjustment, and am going to discuss beginning my own treatment. Your story has given me just the nudge I needed!

Iborg - Ha ha! You definitely weren't a little girl living in England in the seventies then - we were all completely obsessed with The Osmonds. Even now one of my nurse colleagues has a Donny Osmond lamp and alarm clock next to her bed!
Now that is a bit mad I agree......!

But Hawaii - oh yes - am with you there..

No I was a little boy in England in the fifties. My seventies crush was Olivia Newton John......

Although Marie wasn't bad.....great teeth :P

Seriously I'm craving English food right now. How about some bangers and mash and then apple pie with hot custard?

Mike (iBorg) must have a "teeth thing" (Olivia Newton-John had great teeth, too!).

18 Months Down…

Time sure flies when you’re… well, TIME FLIES, anyway!

I figured now would be as good a time as any to ask my ortho “The Question”, but I wanted to do it in such a way that he wouldn’t reply, “I don’t know yet. Teeth move when they want to move,” which seems to be his favorite saying. So, I greeted him warmly, smiled real big and said, “So… 6 more months?”, and gave him a thumbs-up. He immediately replied, “Yeah, I think that’s reasonable.” I WAS SO STOKED! :jump: Then he had to wisecrack, “But since you like them so much, I really don’t want to take them off too soon.” I pretended I didn’t hear that part… He did say my teeth were looking “SO GOOD!” Didn't even mention my still-existent extraction gap or the big one in between my two front teeth.

The only change this month was the elastics configuration: NO MORE TRIANGLES!! I’m back to Class II (upper canine to lower molar), Much, much more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, but I did tell him that only problem with this one is that it tends to pull my teeth back upwards. He didn’t seem worried. He said it might just be how the teeth are shifting and moving around, and settling into the bite, so it feels like they’re moving up. Didn’t want to argue that I was actually seeing it with my own two eyes. But he said, “Don’t worry. Later on, we’ll be dropping in a couple of hooks on the top and you’ll be wearing them in a zigzag configuration, and that will bring them all back down.”

UGH!! The dreaded Zigzag elastics! :yikes: I asked him if I had to wear them in the very front, and he said, “Yep.” I said, “All day long?” and he said, “Yeah, for a little while.” How in the hell am I supposed to TALK? I'm a secretary and answer the phone all day. I do not have enough vacation leave to take off simply because I can't open my mouth. (Though my coworkers will find that part hilarious!) I shall reserve judgment until I see what he has in store. But for now... NO BUENO.

But I’m so happy to hear that I will probably not have to go beyond my 2-year sentence. I am quite over them at this point. We had guests visiting from the mainland last week, and we were out sightseeing with them every day. Translation: LOTS of pictures were taken, and there was no way I was going to be wearing those triangles in all those pictures, both for aesthetic, as well as comfort reasons (not comfy to smile with them in.) So… I didn’t wear them for about 2-3 days last week. Yes, I was a naughty girl…

As always, an updated pic that looks pretty much like the last few pics I’ve posted. So disheartening to see no progress, but if my ortho sees it, I guess that’s what matters.

Okay, it's been 8 hours and all I can say is... OUCH!! :( My upper teeth are killing me! (So much for "no changes today"). I guess the elastics are doing their thing and pulling my upper teeth back. Can't bite down on anything, though. The good thing is: This configuration is SO much easier to handle. Not one elastic breakage today, and I can even eat with them in. :jump:

You know, in spite of the gap between your fronts your teeth look extremely good!

I hope your Ortho decides to work on closing those gaps soon! I also hope you don't get that zig zag config. Elastics in general are a pain in the butt...Why make it worse?

Hi Buckey!

Thanks for replying! I was beginning to think I was talking to myself here (not unlike what I do in everyday life...)

Ortho is still working on my overjet, which is why I'm sure I still have that gap. You can't tell much from the photo, but the overjet is definitely still there, and it's only ONE tooth (my upper-right central incisor) that sticks out, so as soon as he gets that bugger under control, I'm sure he'll start closing up that middle gap. I just discovered yesterday that the chain link on that tooth was not fully around the bracket; only halfway. :x So... out came my trusty plaque scraper, which I used to hook the chain back on properly. I'm telling you - this ortho assistant is very sloppy. Next time I'm checking my teeth before I leave the office.

Would you believe (and I'm sure you will believe) that my extraction gap is STILL not fully closed?? I swear, it's only 1-2mm wide, but I can still feel it, though it's not noticeable to anyone else. Teeth are feeling much better today, pain-wise.
