I am now fully braced! :D

Great appointment today and all of my faith in my ortho has been completely restored (after that slight waiver last appt). Here's the rundown:

Getting the lowers on was a piece of cake since I knew exactly what to expect. Doing great so far, no pain, just "itchiness" and the feeling of foreign metal in my mouth. It's so weird that I'm so used to my uppers now that they feel almost normal in my mouth whereas my lowers feel quite bulky at the moment. Looking forward to the day when my lowers feel a part of my mouth too. I'm also happy that my lower lip doesn't bulge out as much as I was thinking it might.

All of my issues that I listed in my last post were thoroughly looked at:

1) Tooth sensitivity to cold in one area - x-rays were taken of the 2 teeth in question to make sure the roots look ok and that there are no cavities. All good on both of those fronts. Did the little tap-tap & grind-grind test on that blue paper to see if those teeth were hitting something in an odd way and nope, they don't even make contact due to the bite turbos. We determined in the end that the sensitivity was caused by tying the cross bite canines to that adjacent bracket, thus creating some force on that tooth. This time when they retied the canine they tied to right to the wire.

2) Looked at my overlapping front teeth and agreed that that needs to be corrected. Removed the power chain and added figure 8 wire ties (not super tight) to rotate the front tooth that's slipping behind and to make sure the gaps that were closed up front stay closed.

3) My uppers are all retied and even the ortho commented that he notices that my canines really seem like they are on the move - YAY! :D

On the day that I got my uppers on I was so down and depressed - and honestly I'm kinda glad that I didn't get uppers and lowers on all at once - this is quite the metal mouth LOL! No worries though, it's all for a good cause in the end. I don't lisp either, I was concerned about that in the first few days because I have a really important job interview tomorrow.

I also kinda laughed to myself because after my appointment I went to a bookstore to do some prepping for my interview, had a coffee and some cheesecake. Then I did a little shopping after that - it was so nice to just pick up and carry on with my life rather than rushing straight home and crying as I did when I got my uppers on!

Day 5 into bottom braces and it's going well. I was pretty sore on the couple days after getting them on, and my front bottom teeth are still really sore. But this hasn't really inhibited anything, I'm still eating well and just chewing on my back molars.

I kid you guys not though - literally on day after I got my bottoms on my lower front teeth were already aligned! I went and looked at my before pics of them on the previous page here and I was so amazed they they were already aligned well side by side! No wonder they are so sore.

Thanks Lady and Peach! Yes, all full of metal here  I kinda like the overall look though. It looked kind of odd when I only had the uppers on, now it looks more complete lol.

Congrats on getting your lowers!

I got my tops and bottoms at the same time, I almost think it would have been better to get just the tops or bottoms done at first just to have time to get used to them. It is quite a shock to have a full metal mouth all at once!

And it's a good thing you figured out what was causing the tooth sensitivity. That must have been driving you crazy! Have you had any problems with it since your appointment?

The tooth sensitivity has gone way down since the elastic tie hasn't been tied to that bracket. It's not entirely gone, it pops back up now and then when I'm eating ice cream or something, but nowhere near the magnitude that it was. I can pretty much eat and drink normally without worrying about it. It was weird last night though - I was eating a little ice cream and it was being a bit sensitive. So I tried to keep the ice cream on the other side of my mouth, and suddenly I felt an actual pop near the sensitive area and then the sensitivity was gone. That tooth must still be quite loose or something from that elastic being tied to it and maybe the nerve is briefly exposed when it's in a certain position.

Hi Sarahlynn,

please to meet you (kinda) just been reading through your story. Well done and congrats for everything thus far. I see your just going through the sensitive teeth phase, this is a bit of an ass but it doesnt last forever. Once you front 6 teeth have aligned and locked in place the aching will stop.

I noticed from your pictures you had a similar problem to me, (kinda) your canines were pushed back into the roof of your mouth like my incisors were. I had springs and wires pulling on them for a couple of months before they fell in line with the rest of the pack. I think for me seeing the rooftop teeth come into line was probably the best feeling out of my entire treatment so far, at the time it seemed to take ages, but it really wasnt.

Your doing great, keep it up and you'll be there in no time.

If you ever need any advice or just wanna talk drop a post on my wall or if you want join the metal mouth facebook group :)

big hug \o/

Thanks Martin! I think I've read your story awhile ago but I'll go and take another look at it now. Yes having my canines come forward is like waiting for Christmas, I will be ecstatic on the day that those get brackets and are actually aligned. I can feel them making progress and my gums are starting to come forward in that area. Everyone talks about their "social 6" and it's been only 4 for me for so long - I can't wait to have 6!

I'm also glad to hear that the sensitivity will go away once those front 6 are aligned. It's been annoying but at least I can carry on normally for the most part in this last week.

It's been too long since I logged and updated - I haven't even taken pics in a couple months! I really need to though so that I can see for myself how things are coming along.

I'm happy with my progress, I'm 5 months in and my pesky canines are both ALMOST right where they need to be in the arch!! One actually is up here but that one is rotated pretty badly. A few weeks ago I got a second button added to that to help rotate it along. It's pretty much in place and I hope it rotates quickly.

The other canine isn't rotated, but it's been slower moving - but it won't be long now before it's in the arch. At my last appt. the assistant put metal ties onto the canines to pull them along faster than the elastic ties and boy did I feel them really start to move after that!

My lowers are coming along nicely, I really don't think I need any extractions. I have a square wire on the bottom. I still have one bottom tooth that is slightly rotated and has a wire tie, but I think it'll straighten out soon. I can tell that my lower arch has widened into the U shape nicely.

I've been so busy with things that I haven't paid much attention to my braces 8) The funny thing is that I switched jobs, been at this new one for 1 month now - and it's in the dental school of a university (I do research). I've seen so many other adults with braces, and everyone there just loves teeth, so I feel right at home!! One of the first people I met on my first day also has braces (and he's roughly my age). I would have felt so embarrassed to work there with my old, crooked teeth, but now I don't feel any hesitation smiling wide while at work!
