So they're off! The solution to the canine problem was that my ortho filed it to take the sharp point down a little. I was really concerned that he would take too much, but it turned out okay!
Getting the braces off didn't hurt, it was a little pressure but nothing bad. What did HURT was when the assistant polished off the glue. She started out using a sander shaped like a drill. It wasn't the polishing itself that hurt, it was the blast of cold air that went with it! I don't want to scare anyone, though - I had so much trouble because my teeth are very sensitive to cold. I use sensitive tooth toothpaste, but apparently it isn't working enough. And of course we all react to things differently, so what was unbearable to me might be fine for someone else, even for someone else with sensitive teeth. But, for me, it was so bad that I couldn't let the assistant finish. She switched to another sander that didn't have the blast of cold air, then for the touch-up areas handed me back to the ortho to use something else. The other sanders were unpleasant, but not painful.
And now, they're off! I'm going back in this afternoon to pick up a temporary retainer, but before then, I'm going to eat a big, hard sandwich, using all of my teeth and not just the side.
And, I'm telling my close friends & family that my braces are off, but apart from that I'm not spreading the word - I want to see how many people notice. I have a feeling that hardly anybody will - I already spoke with two of my co-workers I see every day, and neither one of them noticed said a word! And I was smiling and laughing through both conversations! Just shows that having braces is not a big deal at all - most people aren't staring at your teeth, so they won't notice whether you have them or not.
Anyway, I'd love to post photos, I'll try to find a way.
