Day 153
Well, I haven't really noticed a huge amount of difference over the last 4 or 5 weeks, although to be perfectly honest - I haven't been taking that many photos either. I've been pre-occupied organising my holiday to America, which has been a very welcome distraction from focusing on my teeth all the time.
Since my last adjustment, 48 days ago, my teeth are feeling great. I've actually been able to hold a piece of pizza and bite into it like I used to... such a good feeling!!! I missed being able to do that. Usually after I've eaten, I must admit that my teeth feel a tad sensitive, but it doesn't last too long.
I've had minor periods of pain here and there, which I'm guessing is just my teeth doing what they need to do at various shift points. All good.
Anyhoo, I've got an appointment with my Ortho at 1:00pm tomorrow (day 154) to have my ligatures changed. They are looking a little bit discoloured, not hugely, just a bit - however I'm visiting my parents this coming weekend in the country and I haven't seen them for a couple of months so I kind of want my teeth to look as good as possible when they see them, y'know? Which means, no discoloured ligatures!!!
My next adjustment isn't scheduled until August 20th, so I'm not sure if I will actually have an adjustment squeezed in early or not tomorrow. Given my track record with thesevkind of visits, there's a good chance I will get an adjustment, but it's not a definite. Will let you all know how it goes either way!
I will also get some more pics online real soon and do a bit more of a 'before and after' comparison.
Talk to you all later!

Hey All,
Thanks for the comments everyone! I never thought that photos of my teeth would even look any where near good enough to make someone excited about their braces journey, so it really is wonderful to hear that. Thank you ckrobyn.
So, here I am, day 154, and my 5th adjustment is complete. What a visit!!!! I feel like so much happened!! As I wrote last night, today's visit was really only to get my ligs changed but, as I had kind of anticipated, my orthodontist carried out a complete adjustment. Woo-hoo!
Okay, I've now had both upper and lower archwires changed from 'alignment wires' to 'straightening wires'. I'm not entirely sure what the difference is, other than the straightening wire feels much tighter when it was first put in initially when compared to the alignment wires. In my previous adjustments when the wires were changed they never really felt tight until he did the whole twisty thing to them. I see him doing something to the wires and brackets, but I really don't understand the mechanics behind any of it or what he actually does to make it feel tight...
Also, my Ortho commented on how wonderful my progress is and that he thinks I will be out of braces well before the 18 month period.
This is particularly exciting for me, given that my original sentence was approximately 24 months!!!!!!!! To be honest, 18 months alone would still be a win/win situation for me because its still way before my 28th birthday... not that it really matters, it's just that my original goal was to have my teeth fixed before I turned 28... so I'm just thrilled to know that it will probably happen well before then!! Total bonus!
In addition to the new wire, I'm also sporting a lovely little elastic on my right side, joining from the lower back tooth to one of my uppers. Fun, fun! I knew the day for elastics would come along eventually because in my last visit my Ortho mentioned that I would be using elastics in about 5-6 months. Turns out now is as good a time as any!!! I'm not really looking forward to having to take the elastics out for every meal but *shrugs*, it's a small price to pay for results I reckon!!!!! So far I've not eaten any elastics, but I'm sure that day won't be too far off either, hehehe! I will be sure to keep a tally of how many elastics I swallow.
Oh, also, this adjustment was no where near as painful as my previous ones. Actually, it really, really, really pales in comparison. In my last adjustment I remember clutching my fists in agony and trying not to scream, lol. I guess if I had thought about the whole process alot more I probably would have realised the adjustments would get less painful. I mean, once my teeth get close to their new positions in my mouth and have done most of their shifting around there isn't really that much pressure or tightening that needs to be done. YAY!
My Ortho also told me that over the coming weeks I will probably notice gaps appearing in my front few teeth...this I am soooo NOT happy about, but he said it is normal and it is all part of getting things to move where he wants them...*HMPH*... well, I guess I can put up with that...hehehe! Now that he told me that, I just know I will be watching for gaps everyday, lol.
So, I still need to get some pics online but I really don't think there have been that many changes. Nonetheless, I will get some new pics up later tonight!!!!!
Later everyone!!!!!

Hey Everyone!
Day 161. Before I forget, my elastic-eating tally is at two.
Chillin-in-grilz: Thanks for the comments! Yeah, I am pretty pleased with my progress to date. My whole journey so far has been nothing but positive and exciting!
Okay, so I said I would get new photos online about a week ago and I didn’t do it, my bad. Still, better late than never, right? Here are the new pics I said I would put up. I took them last night so they are brand, spanking new!
I took photos from the side, then my uppers and then front on. I figured that seeing them from the side would be different to what I have shown before, plus it gives another indication of the changes that have been happening.
Now that my teeth are relatively aligned for the most part (which rules), I don’t expect to see major changes like I did in the first few months. I’m sure there will still be lots of changes over time but I don’t expect them to be blinding obvious like what has happened so far. I’m looking forward to seeing my extraction gaps get smaller and smaller though. Admittedly, I have noticed the gaps getting smaller already (that is, when compared to when my teeth were first extracted) so hopefully that will be something that I keep on noticing!
Enjoy the photos and thanks for checking out my braces diary!!!

wow, now I'm really stoked
so my braces go on 13 Aug and my lack of patience is making waiting tough. now that I've seen the incredible results you've had, the wait is going to be unbearable.
hope your trip goes well...at least everything will be super cheap with our totally crap dollar!

Dane, your progress is amazing! You must be so pleased!
How's the elastics treating you? Swallow any more? I don't have elastics yet(not sure if I'm even getting them)but, if/when I do, I'll be keeping count of my intake also(I wonder how many calories per serving? ).

*melissa* - Thanks so much. You're totally right, it is really amazing to see things actually changing. Being able to see the changes has made me feel so much more comfortable with my teeth. I find myself smiling differently already because of the changes; actually, I smile with my teeth showing all the time now... it's a good feeling and I know for sure that if it wasn't for those changes, my lips would still be tightly shut whenever I smile.
Sweet L - Thanks for your message! I will post pics more regularly (just for you, hehehe). I do take alot of photos so I don't really have an excuse for not doing it more often, plus I'm on this site almost every day, but just lurking in the shadows.
metallic30 - I can remember being at exactly the same stage as you. This site is a great motivator for fuelling excitement but it can also make time go very, very sloooooooow when you see how much progress people make and you just wanna join them!!!!! Don't worry though, it's one of those things that when you look back on, you will be saying "Wow, I can't believe I've had these on for X amount of time already, it's going so fast" - trust me, you will find that happening to you. Also, I never thought I would see changes (for some stupid reason I just figured that my teeth would be sooooo impossible to fix that I would never see changes) but lo' and behold, it does happen - and you will enjoy it soooo much!!! So enjoy looking forward to what you have to look forward to... does that make sense? Hehehe. Oh, and thanks for the well wishes about my holiday (only 29 days to go); have to say, I love the conversion rate at the moment! Cheers!
jenny101101 - Thanks so much! I am pretty happy so far. So far the elastic eating tally still stands at two! I laughed out loud when I read your question about the calorie intake (now you've got me thinking, hahaha)!!
So, overall things are going great. I have forgotten about putting my elastics on twice though. Oooops! Both times after dinner too... the first time realised I was half way through my 50 minute treadmill run at the gym (about an hour after I took my elastic out) and coz I didn't have any elastics in my gym back I couldn't just put one straight back on.... gggrrrrrr
But, guess what!?!? I've realised that next year I will probably have my 10 year high school reunion (I can't believe I've been out of high school for 10 years, coz I still feel like a little kid...) I'm wondering when the day will come along and I will wake up feeling like a grown up, hahaha! Surely that day can't be too far away, lol. Although I do say things which make me feel old sometimes, like "Kids these days should pull their pants up", "That P-plater is driving wahhaaay too fast" shaking my head objectionably, "Why does that kid feel the need to listen to his iPod so loudly, I don't want to hear it"... hmmm, actually, maybe I really am an old man already...hmmmm...okay, okay, I'm digressing. Time to get back on track.
So yeah, my high school reunion; I was thinking it would be soooooo great to have my teeth lookin' great for the reunion. I guess it's one of those fantasies that alot of people have... turning up to a high school reunion and knocking the socks of people. I mean, at the very least, I don't want to turn up and have people thinking "Gee time hasn't been too nice to Dane now has it?". I know it's a stupid thing to care about what other people think... and to be honest, most of me doesn't care what they think... but then somewhere inside me there is a little voice saying otherwise. Sorry to get all 'Romy and Michelle' on you guys, but it is sort of related to my teeth, hehehe.
So yeah, that's what I was thinking the other day when I realised a reunion was heading my way. Anyways, I've ranted on for way too long today! Will check in again real soon!!!
Byeeeeeeeee!

Hey All,
Just checking in for a quick update and an elastic-eating tally update, hehehe.
Thanks for the comments Leager2000. I appreciate the support. I'm sure you will see great progress too, which I'm looking forward to seeing!!
So, lately. I've been trying really hard to only take my elastic out if I really, really need to when I'm eating, which is generally only once a day; dinner time (oh, and when I brush of course, so four times a day in total). Breakfast and lunch aren't really that difficult to eat with an elastic in my mouth, it doesn't bother me for these meals. Just dinner. I'm pretty used to it, plus I've mastered the art of putting the elastic on in one swift movement.
Anyway, I was eating some chocolate the other day and it had hazelnuts in it (and just so you know, I don't eat alot of junk food). Anyway, this was sooooooo yummy, and I haven't eaten anything with nuts in it for so long either (this is another one of my excuses, you'll see why soon). So picture this; I was relaxed, sitting on the lounge, watching some trashy tv on FOX8 and was enjoying some really good hazelnut chocolate (elastic totally in place) when all of a sudden, for some weird reason, I decided to attempt gulping down a rather ambitious sized mouthful of hazelnut chocolate...suddenly, I felt the elastic flick off my teeth...now, the the normal thing to do here would be to find the elastic and spit it out right? Not me!! I decided I would continue to eat my chocolate in ignorant bliss, nothing was going to distract me, even though I knew full well that should I continue to keep chewing my chocolate and swallow it I would be willingly swallowing my elastic with it. So, the end result? The best tasting elastic to date!!!!!!
Something else I've been meaning to write on here too. When I used to eat an apple and take a bite out of it, I used to always look at the horrible imprint of my arch in the apple. It never looked nice, nothing like the bites you would see in cartoons or movies. BUT, the other day I was eating an english muffin for breakfast (kind of like a thick piece of toast, sort of) and I took a big bite out of it and put the food back down on my plate. Guess what???? BEST BITE MARK EVER!! I was sooooooo impressed by my achievements. Hehehe.
I will put up a new photo soon showing my midline. It is coming along really well I think. No gaps yet like I have been anticipating.
Anyway, I will aim to load some more photos online real soon. I've only got 8 and a half more days of work until my holidays begin and only 14 days until I fly out of Australia and head to America for my dream holiday, woo-hoo!!! I don't know if I've written about my holiday on here before, but basically I had two 'dreams' this year... one was to get my teeth fixed which I never thought would happen, the other one was to see a bunch of my favourite musicals on Broadway in New York... BOTH of my dreams this year are coming true and it is an incredible feeling, I can't believe it's all happening though!!! It's been hard work budgeting for both at the same time but I think it will be totally worth it in the end. In total I will be seeing 7 Broadway shows, 1 Off-Broadway show, 2 shows in Los Angeles (one of which is the world premiere), 4 shows in Las Vegas and 1 show in San Francisco. Plus, it means 2 months off work!!!! Things are going great right now!!
Anyhoo, I will be sure to post some pics online before I leave. I will also make sure I take more photos while I am overseas, even if I can't post them online until I get back!!!
Hope you're all good and thanks for reading!!! Later!
