tebert's story

The Day Before
I have finally decided to take the plunge by getting braces. I'm a 30 yr old who has lived with a substantial gap between my front teeth for as long as I have had permenant teeth. For whatever reason my parents never got them for me when I was younger and I couldn't afford them in my 20's even if I wanted to get it done.

Back in November the family went to the dentist for the ritual of teeth cleaning. During that visit the dentist mentioned that my son could possibly need braces. We made an appointment for him to see and orthodontist and I decided, with the support of my wife, to make an appointment with him. Well after a visit to a second opinion I am getting the braces put on tomorrow.

To start from the beginning of the process I went last thursday 1-18-07 to my consultation. The office was definitely decorated by a sports fan. The floors look like basketball courts and there are signed sports jersey's and other memorabilia scattered among all the examination rooms as well as the wating area. Now I am 6'4" 250 lbs. Needless to say I felt a bit out of place next to 11 and 12 yr old kids playing on the video game system or watching cartoons. The kids didn't seem to care so I guess why should I. It was kind of relaxing watching bugs bunny while waiting to be seen. After the molds and pictures I was fitted with spacers between my back molars to make extra room when the install the actual braces. The best way to describe them is a large piece of chicken or steak lodged between all my back teeth, top and bottom, that you can't remove for a week. I will be very ready to get these out.

Well I guess that sums up everything up to today. I'm excited to finally start to change the one real thing that I hate about myself. Maybe I will actually smile in a picture someday.

Those spacers are very annoying. I feel that I have one weeks menu between my spacers :?.

Good luck with your spacers!
