genoisegurl's brace story

#1 Post by genoisegurl »

Hi, I have been lurking here for a little bit. I'm 29 and have a history of various dental problems. My gums used to be pretty bad and so I have been going to the periodontist for about 6 yrs now. From the first time I met my periodontist, he has advised me to get my teeth straightened because my teeth are so hard to keep clean with all the nooks and crannies. :O Well, I finally took his advice...
Two weeks ago, I had spacers put in and today, I was Braced! It took the 2 full hrs to put on. It really wasn't painful but just unpleasant with the taste of the glue. I have bands on each of the 1st molars and full metal uppers and lowers. man, it's a lot of metal! The archwires were also put into place. As the tech put the wire on the bottom, she commented that my crowding was severe and it was a 9 (out of 10) and that it would bring me a lot of pain. sigh...I definitely feel some pressure now and know it's going to get worse. Not after 2 hrs after I got home, one of my top brackets popped off! Now I have to go back tomorrow and get it glued back on i guess...
I haven't seen my orthdontist a total of 10 minutes ever since I signed up for this. It seems like he delegates his job to everybody else. Is this normal? AND the office is closed the whole month of December! What happens if a bracket is loose during Dec.? I hope this practice doesn't disappoint me that much.
My two front teeth bites onto the bottom two brackets. is this a problem?
I have two teeth (canines or bicupsids?) on the bottom that need to be extracted later because of the severe crowding. One of them is very wayward, like totally out of line. The extraction prob. won't happen til couple mths later. So i was wondering, will my teeth have any room to move before then since it's so crowded? :? will it get worse?

Sorry I have so many questions. This is so new right now and it's occupying my mind. Thanks for reading this. Need to learn to post pics although I have a crappy camera anyway. My teeth are kinda yellow so it's not gonna be pretty. Can't wait to whiten it afterwards!

Welcome to Archwire! I look forward to following your journey!

RE: Crowding/Extractions

I had an ortho consult a few years ago and was told that I would get extractions after my teeth straightened out (he estimated a couple of months). He said he would achieve this by creating an overjet which would be taken care of after the extractions.

Dr. N., however, really was pressing for me to get my extractions done as soon as possible. I got them 3 weeks after I was braced. However, he doesn't seem to be using the space created by the extractions yet, as both archwires only go from canine to canine. You can read about all that in my story.

Good luck!

Thank you guys for the welcome and advice!
What I thought to be a quick appt to glue my loose bracket back on turned into something more painful! My ortho stopped by to take a look and asked if I wanted to go with extraction of the two premolars or if I wanted him to try to work it without extracting. I'm like....I dunno, I will take your advice. Then he said, I'm missing two premolars on the top and also a front bottom tooth and if we extract two premolars on the bottom, I would have an overjet and left it at that. Is an overjet bad; will it affect my profile?
And then the bad news...he said I needed molar bands on the 2nd molars. This was for stability he said. Wasn't too happy to hear that. :( So they put the stupid spacers back in and I have an appt in 2 wks to put another set of molar bands on.
