elpi's toothie adventures - got my wisdoms braced...ouch!

#1 Post by elpi »

Next month I get to have braces, woo! :D here's my story so far.

As a kid I had no major problems with my teeth, I was a little bit goofy as is everyone in my family and they were a bit (naturally) yellow but the issue of braces never came up. When I was in my early twenties my dentist gently suggested them as I had a gap between my top set and bottom set, but I was totally against the idea at the time and not *that* unhappy with my teeth...

..Roll on a few more years, I'm 32 and things have gotten worse, I noticed that a little bit of tooth is often showing in all my photos when I'm not smiling unless I make a real effort to shut my lips firmly. My front teeth are becoming more and more uneven as the process of my wisdom teeth coming through has exacerbated the bit of overcrowding I had before. I look back at photos of me in my late teens and early twenties and wish I had teeth that even again :(

So in January this year I went to a rather overdue appointment with my dentist and ask his opinion, he refers me to the local orthodontist.

The low down from the orthodontist is this;

I need fixed braces for approx 18 months, I can have metal or ceramic, I choose metal because they're cheaper and I like the look of them better.

I'll need (Essix style) retainers for 2 years after that of night time use.

He said that my X-Ray showed I was a very good candidate for braces, he talked about my angles being good, I still don't know *exactly* what he meant but I think it's something to do with my teeth being at the wrong angles but my jaw placement being sound.

He explained that my lower lip was gently pushing my right central incisor out further, so even though the damage had been done with regards to my wisdom teeth, my teeth were still slowly, gradually, gently on the move and *not* in a good way. When he told me that, my mind was 100% made up I'd get the braces :)

I assumed I would need my wisdoms removed but he wants me to keep them, he's getting my dentist to take out 4 of my premolars instead and is going to brace my wisdoms to straighten them and bring them more fully out of the gums, but he won't do that from the start as it might be a bit too much all in one go.

Total cost including retainers is £3100.

But enough writing here's the pics :D (I hope these come up okay, please shout if they don't!)

Straight on - not that bad really

Top arch - you can see the problem more easily

Bottom arch - a bit of overcrowding, nothing major really though

Profile shot - here's where you can see the problem most clearly, my central incisor is *wayward*

I've got my extractions on the 7th and 14th April and my brace day set for the 21st April :P

I can't believe how similar our teeth are! Your incisor seems a little worse than mine, but my canine protrudes further than yours! Even our top molars appear to be at the same angle. Let me know how the extractions go, and I really look forward to seeing your newly braced teeth. Hope it's not too long until I get mine, then our incisors can have a race to see which one straightens up first!

Nice one Elpi, everyones story has to start somewhere.

I cant wait to see you all braced up, its kind of nice i have someone thats following me, feels nice and makes a change,

Wow your mouth just seems full of teeth, you have all 3 molars on show, i look in my mouth in comparison, my first molars have all been removed, my 3rd molars are in the gums still, so really only have 1 molar visible and usable.

i totally envy you on that one :P

21st of April seems so far away at this point in time, i know as i have my first adjustment on the 14th, and that feels so long away. But as soon as your braced up the time between adjustmetns feels like forever.

When do you start getting extractions? are you getting them done privetly?

Be sure to take photos of your mouth after each one, and make sure you keep the teeth :)

Keep on smiling chic, you on the right track now! :)

Hey there Elpi,

Good luck with the extractions! I had 8 teeth removed on Jan 21 this year - 4 wisdoms and 4 premolars under a twilight sedation. I remember the Doctor put the tube in my arm and said to me "Okay, you're going to start to feel dizzy and sleepy, that's just the drugs kicking in"...so thinking I am immortal and clever, I said to myself (in about 1 second) "Fight it, don't let it take you over, defy the marvels of modern medicine and astound everyone in the room - don't let it take you over"...needless to say I was out like a light in the blink of an eye...I don't even remember feeling dizzy, hehehe!

In all honesty, I found the extractions considerably easy. Naturally, there was some discomfort, plus I could only eat mushy foods (which was wonderful, I survived on a diet of mashed potatoes and gravy; which I love) but overall it wasn't as bad as I had expected. I was extremely strict in maintaining a very regular salt wash and antibacterial mouth rinse regime to minimise the risk of infection in the holes and I had a soft baby toothbrush to use for the first 2 weeks. I occassionally got food stuck in the holes but I found that using a spray bottle (with salt water in it) on jet spray always dislodged the food with ease. It was mainly the wisdom holes though, so you may not need to worry about it seeing as yours are staying where they belong! :D

It's all part of the adventure!!! Oh, and I never got to see my teeth once they were out so hopefully you get to see yours at least - ask them before hand coz if you are like me and going under the twilight sedation, you won't remember to do it when you wake up! :-)

Can't wait to hear how everything goes!!! Good luck!!!

Hi Elpi,

I'm jealous of how many teeth you have, I know you are about to have 4 out but you will still be left with more than me lol.

I don't see a single filling either, well done, wish I could say the same.

Good luck in your journey :)

Ooh thanks so much for the support peeps! :D I must admit I've been feeling a bit wibbley about the extractions, it's nice to be reminded that I have an awful lot of teeth (my ortho said I was quite unusual not to be missing any at all) so losing a few little ones isn't going to suddenly turn me into Quasimodo

I do have fillings btw, my childhood dentist put really shallow fillings in my molars, in fact he put fillings in every patient's molars, I suspect he put them in as a kind of protective thing, I know it's a bit odd and not standard dentistry! but I've since had them replaced with the white ones.

I'm not sure about keeping my extracted teeth, I don't want to get all sentimental over them or grossed out, I might just let the dentist keep them! I shall take pics if you really want to see the gaps Martin :P and yes I'm having everything done privately, I think it's £65 per tooth!

Talking of extractions I am having 2 done on the 7th April and then 2 more on the 14th, I forgot to ask but are they likely to do the top set then the bottom set or left then right, it doesn't really matter I'm just curious! :D

On an aside, I seem to be hearing the phrase "it's like pulling teeth" an awful lot since I've had my extractions booked, each time I hear it I wince, even though I know my dentist is pretty handy with the local anaesthetic so I've nothing to fear!

Arrrh yes, now I look more closely I can see that they are indeed filled but white lol...silly me. Mine are all mercury. I've thought about having them changed but not sure if it is or isn't a good idea in my case.

Hi Elpi,

Im pretty sure they will do them left then right, due to how the anaesthetic is applied, one injection in the jaw either side of the tooth plus one in the nerve at the back, this partially numbs the top too, but for good measure you get more in the gum up top plus one in the roof of the mouth. Not sure if youll have exactly the same as your teeth are smaller and further forward.
Plus between extractions it makes more sense as you can eat on the other side while its healing.

Food in the holes is a fun game, especailly rice!

Thats cheap for a tooth out, i paid more than that :(

I heard the saying "you look down in the mouth" alot when i was having my extraction and infection problems, needless to say it wasnt always well received considering the pain i was in!

Hey youve gotta save your teeth, try and get some money back from the tooth fairy.

hehe

Hi elpi,

Congrats on deciding to get braced! Great pics and I look forward to seeing your post-braced pics, too!!

My teeth are yellowish too. I was wondering..have you ever used whitening products? I'm just curious b/c I really want to whiten my teeth after the braces come off and I'm scared it won't work so I was just wondering if you've had any "experience" with whitening products. I've never used anything up to this point....

Good luck with your extractions  .
Keep smilin'! :)

thanks Jenny :)

I've never had my teeth professionally whitened, the products available over the counter, at least in the UK, might be good for cleaning up a bit of superficial staining but won't do a thing for my all natural yellow teeth

I asked my dentist about getting them whitened and he said to get it done when the braces come off so that's what I'm planning to do! He does some kind of combined treatment with lasers and then trays to use at home.

Had two teeth taken out today, arrived early at the dentist and he saw me pretty much straight away, so glad as I was nervy. I managed to cope and everything, no tears but I was shaking like a leaf when the local was kicking in!

5 hours later, half my mouth is still feeling rather numb but I've had some milk and some water without dribbling most of it

Chicken that I am I haven't even looked in my mouth, let alone taken a photograph. I only realised I had gauze in my mouth about 3 hours after I came out!

As for keeping the teeth (or in fact even looking at them ... forget it!) I had my eyes closed through the whole procedure and no way did I want to see them, sorry Martin!

Will be glad when this bit is over but so far so good...ish

Well done elpi, you're over the difficult part. I had two extractions before I had my brace fitted and all in all they were the most difficult part of this whole process for me. You sound very upbeat about it which is great. Take care not to swish water violently around in your mouth (although that is probably the last thing you feel like doing!).

Here's to the healing process, you'll be on your way before you know it.
