****** Beth gets BRACED! ******

#1 Post by beth1966 »

Hi -

Figured I would start a diary on here about my journey, and will include some pictures
along the way.

My story starts like many others - I had braces as a child. Began with 4 adult teeth
extracted, palate expander and then 3 years in braces.

I had nice teeth for years and frankly never really paid them any mind. Time began
to alter them some - but not that bad.

Fast forward to age 38, I was married and subsequently endured 7 months of an abusive
marriage to a raging alcoholic which ended very quicky in divorce. (Live and learn.)

The stress after the marriage regarding various issues with my former husband is
what we suspect either aggrivated or caused my TMJD issues. I began to have
an acheing jaw and never felt like my mouth could rest in a comfortable position.
I visited various dentists all of whom had different opinions and treatment plans
and cost crazy amounts of money because TMJD is not covered by insurance.

Soon my achey jaw turned into intense, daily pain, migraines, and a lot of tears.
I went through a few repositioning splints, cracked one tooth that was subsequently
root canaled but it still hurts me so it must be cracked further, and now have a
horrendous open bite that makes eating/chewing, speaking and even swallowing sometimes
difficult. It is difficult to say if my bite would have gotten this bad even without the TMJD issues - no one will ever know for sure.

Last October my life began to calm down. The threat and fear of my former husband
was no longer a factor and I met someone who has helped me in more ways then I can
explain - and my jaw pain substantially subsided.

So now i am ready to close my open bite and straighten my teeth. I have found a
fantastic ortho - so my journey begins. First I will have the one fractured tooth
i mentioned above removed. Others have recommended having all 4 wisdom teeth (that
are totally erupted) removed as well but this ortho believes they should stay, for
now - but it is possible down the road they may need to come out.

Next week is the extraction, May 1 i get my separators and May 10 I get braced.
I will have ceramic, In-vu braces.

Here are a few pics of my lovely open bite - and one of my smile. 8)

I saw my oral surgeon today for a consult - I am all set for my one lower molar extraction next week, he is a super doctor - I feel very confident and safe with him. Hopefully it won't be too painful.

I am having the extraction on April 8 - I will be sure to check in here and update my story - maybe post a gross picture of the hole in my mouth! LOL

Hi Beth,

Yes, I have my uppers on(1.5 months now). I have Damon 3mx's all around with Damon 3's on my "social six". They're self-ligating. I see you're getting ceramics-are they SL? or do they require ligs?

BTW, is that your dog in your avatar pic? S/he's beautiful! I have a little sesame-zu(sp?) named TJ...he's adorable :D .
Keep smilin'! :)

Hmm not sure what all that means - I know what your social six means but not the 3mxs and damon 3's - i know damon is a brand but you lost me with the "3" stuff. :)

>I see you're getting ceramics-are they SL? or do they require ligs?

No they are not self ligating - my ortho doesn't believe self ligating are any better than ligating and prefers ligating and the brand he uses. He did his entire thesis on self ligating - so I guess he is entitled to his opinion! :) I will be getting ligs - fine with me. I'm doing this for medical/funtional reasons - so as long as he fixes my bite and the position of my teeth I will be happy.

I am concerned with the esthetic LOOK of my braces - so I am getting ceramics all teeth top and bottom - he does not use any metal accept on the bands. I'll be a nut about keeping them clean and stain free for sure! :)

Yup that is my dog Izzy - she is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, the love of my life - well she is and so is my boyfriend!

Thanks - my dog is my pride and joy! :)

No - I ended up going with someone in Ridgewood who I've seen once before and is highly recommended. He also knows a lot about TMJ so I know I am in good hands.

Take care!

Good Luck with your extraction and I hope you heal up quickly.

May will get here quickly and you'll be on your way to that great new smile.

And look at that cute face on Izzy! I've never seen one of those Ridgebacks before. She looks to be a good sized dog.?

Thanks Ken! yes my dog is a big girl - about 65-70lbs.

Keep you posted on how I do!

Thanks B -

Actually the extraction is today - 3 more hours to go. I just hope he doesn't have to dig around too much to get all the pieces out since he said it will crumble. Yuck!

My boyfriend is having his partially erupted wisdom tooth removed today as well - different oral surgeon and several hours after mine. Too cute - we will both be going through the same thing at same time.

Will post an update soon.[/quote]

Had tooth #18 removed yesterday - it is my lower molar just infront of my wisdom tooth. It went SO well, I went to sleep and woke up and it was gone. I barely remember the ride home - i was still drugged up, I didn't drive ofcourse!

Today I took it easy and will do so again tomorrow - since I have TMJ, my jaw is acheing - helps to keep popping Advil.

Here are a few pics - hope it heals fast!
