Braced Very Late - 6 months and counting! new pix

#1 Post by BracedVeryLate »

Hello,
just posted to the introduction, and I would like to track my progress here.
My problems:
-missing canine - need to make room for an implant
-very crowded bottom teeth - need to extract lower incisor
-need to round out the arches
-need to remove two wisdom teeth on bottom that have sprouted
-trauma to left side of mouth, three teeth are yellowed. not sure if bleaching can help
-do something about those shiny silver fillings! (great 80s dental care in NY)

Here are some photos:

Image
not too bad from my right side, but just wait!!

Image
notice missing canine - there is still a baby tooth where a nice big canine should be, thus causing the lower canine to keep moving up and out

here is my top arch with spacers (ouch!) such an attractive angle!
Image

here is the bottom arch with spacers. wow, i never noticed how un-arch-like my bottom arch was!! and my gosh, look at the lineup of the bottom front! i will get the 2nd lower incisor extracted after my braces are on, next week.

Image

no one has ever really seen my teeth, i never smile very widely because of the missing tooth. and, i never noticed how bad the bottom ones were. i would also like something to be done about the bugs-bunny like front teeth. i guess straightening the whole arch will make them look more even. at first i was only going to get braces on the top, just to make room for the implant, but i figured as long as i am all braced-up, might as well go for the whole thing. there goes our vacation budget!!!

thanks for visiting! just going to grab some more over-boiled carrots, applesauce and yogurt for lunch

take care all and hope to see some progress!!!

Good luck with your braces journey. If you look at my photos on my brace story you'll see that our bottom teeth are surprisinly similar! Right down to the non-arch shape, and the twisted lateral incisors.

Lets hope that one day soon we'll be showing off our beautifully rounded arches :-#)

thanks ladies!
sks11, we do have similar bottom teeth. I have gone back and forth with my Ortho about getting the extraction of the bottom incisor. I don't want to extract a tooth, but she has shown me some models, and the teeth just don't fit. My teeth are pretty big. My dentist and oral surgeon agree. From what I gather from this site, extractions aren't as bad as our minds lead us to believe beforehand!!

thanks Melissa, MissSmiley and Jenny! I need all the encouragement I can get. I almost chickened out 2 nights ago and cut the spacers out and I was going to cancel my braces appt. on Thursday!!
Today though, I feel fine about it. Funny how my moods about this can vary so much. I think it's just my fear of getting teeth extracted on Monday.
take care all!!

Hey BracedLate

Getting braces is a definite rollercoaster ride of emotion thats for sure. One day I am up about it and one day I am down. I do know I will be happy with the final outcome so I have to try to keep that in mind. Im glad you didnt chicken out.. Good luck on Thursday with your braces and your extractions on monday! Let us all know how it goes :D

Welcome BracedVeryLate

Just wanted to wish you Good Luck for the start of your braces journey. I had an extraction last week and it was nowhere near as bad as I expected (and I have a fear of dentists!) Like Melissa, I was worried that the gap would make me self-conscious but I've almost forgotten about it now.

Keep us updated on your progress :D

Braced Very Late's Story - Part 2 - Braces on and Photos

#11 Post by BracedVeryLate »

Hi everyone,
Just got my braces on this morning. Thank goodness those spacers are OFF! I wanted to toss them out the window. I really didn't like not flossing for a week.

Here are a couple of photos:
my normal "smile"

big toothy braces smile:

bottom teeth with bands. notice the lonely unbracketed bottom tooth. Say goodbye to it, it's coming out Monday.

laughing face... scary!!

I really did not know my teeth were this crooked. They look especially crooked with the roller coaster arch wire. I never even knew how turned-in the molars were.

I chose gold braces. I have never worn gold in my life, but somehow, they looked better next to my teeth, and they seemed a little smaller than the silver ones.

I feel pretty good about my braces. Several people have already seen me and most comments are - "Oh, you have braces", and that's pretty much it. I thought I would have launched into the whole medical reason for it, but all I have said so far is "Yes, I want straight teeth".

They have been on for about 4 hours and my teeth are just starting to hurt. I am feeling pretty tired, it has been a lot of ups and downs to get to this point and I think I just need some sleep.

take care all and thanks for visiting my story!

Braced Very Late's Story - Part 2 - Braces on and Photos

I forgot to add... a couple bands felt too sharp, and something was sticking out the other band and I mentioned it to the technician. She sanded one down and bent down a 'hook' on another band and they felt much better. So, just a tip, if something really feels odd, speak up about it!!

Looks great! I love the gold too. I just got braces last week so I'm pretty new myself. Doesn't it feel great knowing we're on the way to straight teeth?!

Thanks for the encouragement Shannon, Embrace, Unhappy Teeth and Ken.
The surgeon's office just called to confirm my extractions for Monday, and I almost chickened out again! I thought - hmmm... maybe I have time to find another orthodontist who might want me to keep the bottom tooth....

...right

...on Friday

...at 3pm.

I thought I better check back here for some good thoughts!
take care everyone and have a good weekend. I will post some photos of my jack-o-lantern mouth next week.

Goodness, your upper arch looks so similar to mine! Or, well, at least the baby canine area. It is like we are long-lost arch twins!
I had my braces on for 2 years, 1 month, 2 weeks and 2 days.
