grneydfairy's braces story

#1 Post by grneydfairy »

Ok everyone please bear with me in this post... first post and it's long but any advice would really be appreciated.

Background: I had braces twice (I was terrible about wearing my retainers) and after having crooked teeth for about 8 years, I decided I wanted to get them again. I thought it was perfect because my regular dentist also did ortho so I figured that would be great. The location was right down the street. Nothing could be better!

I'm 24 years old and I was just tired of how one tooth crooked to the left and overlapped.

We talked about options and I decided on metal braces. Originally it was scheduled to be limited ortho, he told me it would be about 6 or 7 months. Four months into my braces, my dentist sold his practice and moved roughly 40 miles away and expected me to come all the way out there for him to finish. He was still allowed to practice at one of his other locations close to my house and I felt like he should come out here to finish what he started. I went out there once and told him I wasn't going to go out there again. He met me at this closer location but then kept putting it off to meet with me. Finally I just said I'll go out there, I just want this done.

It's been about 9 months and I went to see him today and he said he was going to close up the spaces in my teeth and I asked "and you're going to turn this tooth right?" He told me that there was probably not any more rotating that could be done. Basically my teeth are all flush except the one tooth that I wanted straightened in the first place. It was straightened twice before and now he's telling me that's about all he can do with it! Why did I pay to have my teeth straightened when they aren't going to be straight?!

Any advice or opinions would be GREATLY appreciated

bracedagain The dentist that he sold his business to does ortho but only invisalign and doesn't have much experience with or any tools to finish my metal brackets.

jt2lang He said since I had them twice before it was going to be really easy to move them again and that's why it was limited ortho... the time being limited. I would gladly pay someone else but I paid so much for these and at this point it doesn't seem fair that he would get to keep my money and not finish the job *shrugs*

I do have a consult with someone tomorrow. My dentist made a point to tell me in an unpleasant tone that this dr "usually does major reconstructive surgery and doesn't usually handle things like one tooth being out of place" but that "if it can be fixed he will be able to fix it" I hope he can give me some help and relief!

I'm so mad... this one tooth is what I was so self-conscious about, the one that ultimately made the decision for me to get braces again and he's going to tell me he can't fix it. I won't lie, the rest of my teeth needed to be in line and they are straight now but that tooth isn't and I don't see the point in "having straight teeth" when they're not straight.

He should have told me from the beginning if he wasn't going to be able to straighten that tooth because it's part of his job to STRAIGHTEN teeth and is he's not able to do that then wth. I think he was just happy to take my money and thought he could get away with a job poor done.

Thanks for letting me vent and I will let you guys know how it goes tomorrow! Thanks for the support!

its sounds to me like he just wants to keep your money and he knew he was moving 40 miles away and you would eventually get tired of traveling so far and find another ortho. I'm getting angry and he's not even my ortho, lol. If he doesn't want to finish the job then he needs to refund you back your money. My teeth have always been straight but I had a gap in my two front teeth and I wish my orthodontist would have let me go through along process only to tell me he couldn't close my gap and the was my main purpose of getting braces. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do but don't let him off so easy.

Sounds a little fishy to me... esp. since he's a dentist that just so happens to do ortho as well, it just doesnt sit right with me. I have heard many stories on here about dentists not being licensed to do orthodontics... but do it anyways. Argh, that makes me soo angry!!

It's so funny too because I work for Sherwin-Williams paint company and we tell people not to go to Home Depot or Lowe's for paint because they don't specialize in it. I should have known!

And Erikab1033 I agree... He had to have known he was moving because he had to purchase the space and wait for it to be built (it was a new build)!

I go to an actual ortho tomorrow so I will let you all know how it works out. Thanks for your support and for being angry with me hahaha[/b]

Went to an actual ortho today. I gave him a little background before I let him look and when he did look right away he said "oh yeah I can see that, that tooth needs to be rotated... that's not a problem, I can do that for you. I'm gonna do "some ortho related term' and I want to see you back in two weeks and we'll go from there. It should be really quick" And I can tell already that my teeth have moved and that tooth is already starting to rotate into place!

He said he couldn't figure out whatever my old dentist's assistant put on there to try and rotate it, he'd never seen it before. Then his assitant was putting on bands and said "oh those are really interesting brackets I've never seen them before" i'm thinking "what else am I going to keep hearing" the icing on the cake was when he asked me how much I got charged "oh, $2700 for just the top teeth"

I totally got ripped off and I feel like such a naive idiot! I'm going to be writing to the board and talking to CareCredit and start the process of getting my money back. Hey if you're not finishing the job, there's no reason to keep all of my money. AND since you did such crappy work, if you would even call it work, you shouldn't keep my money!

Anyway, I feel so much better with this new guy and I just wish I would've realized sooner what was happening to me!

Ok, it's been a super long time since I have gotten on (I'm going back to school for my Master's and between that and work I have no time!) I wanted to update you guys (and also check in to see how everyone's smiles are coming along)
So I switched orthos and my new Ortho has been awesome. I just wish I had done this sooner because I'm sure I would have them off by now. So I went in on Tuesday for an adjustment and asked him what the probability was of me getting them taken off by next Friday (I have a wedding to go to next Sunday and I want to smile in pictures without them) he said it was a good possibility and asked me what else I would like to see happen. I told him I wanted one tooth brought down more and the tooth next to it turned outward so that my arch was good. We made an appointment if everything was how I liked to remove them on Wednesday. He made an adjustment to my wire and they put a power chain on. My teeth aligned how I wanted them to by like the end of the day. My only problem is that they aren't closing up. I still have some "pepper spots" or "black triangles" or what have you but I want so badly to have them removed. Since my teeth seem to move quickly (under his treatment) I'm going to see if he can do anything on Monday to speed up so that I can have them taken off Wednesday.
I know I'm being a pain but do you guys think I am pushing it too much?

Glad to hear things are working out with the new ortho. It sounds like he really cares and knows what he is doing.
Did you get a refund/ partial refund from your previous dentist/"ortho" guy? Were you able to dispute it with credit care? I hope that part was also taken care off.

Have fun at the wedding :)

Yes, I got half of my money back and I didn't have to dispute with CareCredit. The dentist was trying to say that he completed 3/4 of the work and would refund me the rest and I told him that wasn't going to fly because theres NO way he did 3/4 of the work. Plus he's not the one to provide me with retainers.

I just don't know if I'm being unreasonable. If my teeth moved so fast on Tuesdays alignment, isn't there SOMETHING he can do to make them close as fast too?

Hi grneydfairy...welcome back! I'm glad you got some money back from your old ortho and have found a new, awesome ortho!

In regards to getting your spaces being closed faster, I would assume power chains would do the trick...though I am not sure how quickly they would be able to close up the spaces as I've never had PC's before. Have you tried posting this question in the metal mouth forum??

very interesting indeed...

we have such similar stories....finding new ortho's because our previous ones sucked, getting refunded some of our money, getting debraced, then starting back up in braces again...except this time, i'll be going for lingual braces on top...
have you ever considered linguals?

I know a little bit about the linguals but have never thought seriously about them. They seem like they would be uncomfortable on my tongue but I'm sure they obviously can't be too bad. Let us know how they are, I'm very curious!
