Kaydee's braces story...with pics

#1 Post by kaydee »

Well, I thought it was about time i took the time to write out my story. Im a 35 year old female (the new 21) living in australia.

I was originally told when I was a kid I would need braces, but the dentist back then said wait until all my adult teeth had come through. And financially I dont think my parents could afford it. When I was 21, i was about to move to sydney to start working for a bank and just prior to going down I had a dentist appt and he said to me "when you get a little bit of money behind you I would seriously invest in getting some braces" So this was always in the back of my mind.

Later that year, for some reason I decided I wanted to learn to fly and make a career out of it. I started learning to fly and this took 5 years of lots of money to pay for the lessons to get my commercial license. Eventually I got work as a flight instructor but as you are starting out the wages are very low and continued to be for the next several years. I got into a small regional airline back in 2005. I went for a consult with an orthodontist probbaly early 2006.

He basically told me I had overcrowding, I still had one baby tooth and an impacted canine. The diagnosis was 2 years in braces with canine exposure surgery. He gave me a referal to an oral surgeon, which I couldnt get in with the bloke for about 3 months, so left it.

Then I started chasing a job with one of the big airlines in oz and got accepted. This was going to cost $30,000 for an aeroplane endorsement for the job but was also going to more than double my pay. :o

Now that Im settle in this job and debt free (apart from a mortgage) I decided to get the braces. I rang up in april and eventually got an appt in may, this ortho told me he would take out 9 teeth, including the 4 wisdoms, the baby tooth and the canine. He said as I wasnt 16 anymore pulling the canine down may or may not work or could take quite a long time. :?

My oral surgery was scheduled for the 12 nov, so I had the 9 teeth pulled under a general. I got spacers in on wed 3rd dec and BRACES TOMORROW!!!

So for now thats my story. I have taken pics but I have to work out how to upload them onto here, so bare with me.

Congrats Kaydee! Yay another Aussie. You are going to be super happy with your decision to get braces. I am 21, and have had braces for almost 8 months and I can honestly say that it only feels like I've had them for about 4 months. They feel so new still, yet I'm 100% comfortable with them. And my bite and teeth have changed SO much just within this 8 month period. I have lots of pics in my story if you click the 'www' if you want.

Good luck and I look forward to viewing your photos when you get them uploaded :)

Well... My tooth bling is on. I went to Ortho this morning about 10.30am, all was pretty straight forward. Im an easy gagger, so to start off there were a few gaging moments, but we got there eventually. So after they attached the brackets and archwire etc they gave me a mirror to have a look, I was quite impressed with how the clear look on top, barely noticeable. But oh my goodness DID THEY FEEL WEIRD!!! It took me a few hours to get used to the feeling of them in my mouth. (and im still getting used to it)

A couple of guys from work gave me a call and asked if i had lunch and I said no, so we decided to meet at a cafe. After scrutunising the menu for 20 mins I had to ask what was in the soup of the day (ie no rich tomato base as I have clear ligs up top) so the soup was out and after looking at the menu another 10 mins i figured the only thing I could have was a milkshake. I then got daring and saw a choc mousse so i ordered that and just prior to it arriving a felt a great pulling in my mouth and a little bit of pain. I pulled my little mirror out and the archwire had popped out one side of a bracket and half taken a lig off with it. Rang ortho staright away and they are back in my town wed, so booked to get it fixed then.

Anyway, so far no pain, I have waxed up on a few of the protruding bits and now I will just wait for tomorrow which is probably when the pain will begin.

Im so glad I have done this and wish I had done it sooner (watch this space I may not be feeling like this tomorrow)

Great job in taking the plunge in getting your braces applied. The first few days are pretty bad getting used to all your new equipment. But not worry, it will get better. I have notice that I have been spitting more at people now that I have my braces on (i just thought i was weird) glad to see it isnt just me!

All I can say is..... OUCH
Its not excruciating pain or anything but the teeth feel so tight and having said that I havent resorted to any pain killers yet. No ulcers as yet, I waxed up majorly last night but should have put some on the inside of my molar bands as my poor tongue kept getting a beating from them. I hear you about the whole spitting thing, except I havent spat at any with the braces yet but i was doing it a bit when I had the spacers in.

I will keep plugging away, no solid food is in sight yet, but I am so hungry, pumkin soup and yoghurt just dont cut it

I can't even believe that you were being so safe (not wanting to stain the ligs and getting a milkshake) only to have the the archwire pop and break a lig. Hope the rebonding of the lig works out better for you!

Well, Im a blonde if there ever was one. I went into the orth to have my wire that had come out of the bracket re put in AND well ummm, it was actually left out on purpose as it is next to my canine fang and it was too steep a gradient for the wire to go up. I felt like a right twit. But, i thought it had popped out as I hadnt really had a good look at the braces when i felt the sudden sharp pulling and then my friend i was having lunch with noticed that the wire wasnt in place and the lig was off in one corner. Oh well.

Day 3 is going well, I managed to eat snapper last night with some mash and some really soft cooked carrots and broccoli and still havent needed pain killers nor have I any ulcers. Now Im starting to feel these things are a part of my mouth too.

Glad to hear you're starting to feel better! The first few days have been rough for me too (I got top braced in October but the bottom's just went on last Wednesday, as you read in my story :)) but everything is starting to feel better now. I think I'm going to make herb-broiled haddock for supper tomorrow night! Mmm.

Congrats on starting your journey, just keep telling yourself how awesome your teeth will look in a few short months!
