Freak's Braces story (incl. pics)

#1 Post by invertigofreak »

12 December 08

I got my braces on! I wasn't overly nervous, thankfully! It was all rather painless. I lay down on the chair with my mouth clamped open (the clamp hurt) and they got started. Only problem was that I got a bit of phlegm at the back of my throat, which kept chocking me.

It was over within about an hour. I was then sent into another room to watch a video on how to look after them. After watching the video, I was given a pack full of goodies, including:

Tooth brush with interdental brush on the other end, interdental brush, small interdental brush, floss, floss threaders, wax (lots), dentists mirror, travel toothbrush, egg timer and tooth mousse.

(I have forgotten what most of that was for. LOL)

No pain until around 4pm when it started getting annoying and I started feeling cranky.

I sucked on potato chips for dinner.

13 December 08
Smoothie for Breakfast.
Pumpkin Soup for Lunch
Mashed potato and Cheese Sauce for dinner

Minimal pain today. A bit achy. Most of the pain is from the ulcers caused by the clamp thingy rubbing on my gums.

14 December 08
Smoothie for Breakfast
Chocolate Sundae for Lunch
Mashed Potato, Mashed Pumpkin and well-cooked broccoli for dinner
Peaches (ouch!!!) and icecream for dessert

I woke up with a headache, so I took panadol straight away.

Went to work today. No bad comments from those I work with regarding the appearance of my braces. Yay. That made it a lot easier. However, I had to talk lots, and I found that I have gotten myself a bit of a lisp. I hope that goes away.

I am finding my mouth getting very dry. I don't feel thirsty, just my mouth (particularly my lips) are very dry. Drinking water seems to provide temporary relief.

Hi bracedagain. Thanks for the reply.

I had KFC for dinner tonight. I have seriously started feeling like I am slowly starving to death. LOL...... the hunger.... I have been living off ice cream and smoothies for the majority of the last few days.

So I stopped at KFC after work and got chips, chicken SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM and gravy... (they left out my sweet & sour sauce, of course). Chips - yummy.... Not too hard to eat. Chicken SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM were a bit harder, but still do-able...

Also, my orthodontist rang to check on me this morning to see how it was all going! I was quite shocked by that! What a nice touch. Everything seems to have settled, and even the rubbing isn't too bad!!!

Good to hear you're starting to feel better! My uppers were sore for about 3 or 4 days, and the lowers for about a week, I'm still getting used to those though (I got lowers on the 3rd). It will get easier...plus, it's a great excuse to eat all the ice cream you want!

It's funny that people will say braces is a great diet and we complain about nothing to eat but the stuff we CAN eat is generally unhealthy haha... I'm worried I might GAIN weight from eating so junky ha... I really like the sound of the mashed pumpkin, I'll have to try that!

That's awesome about your ortho calling you too. Great way to start off your braces journey!

Hi Invertigo, Welcome :)

Your braces look great! I had a bit of a lisp too at the beginning but it went down a little after I got used to the braces. Your orthodontist is so sweet for calling to see how you were getting along.

Thanks guys!

I found that lettuce is definately not something to eat today. LOL. It was worse than something chewy.

I had a baked potato, with shaved chicken from the kebab shop. The potato was excellent. I think I will start making them at home to eat. Thankfully christmas is almost here and that means I will go back to working normal times (am finishing at 9pm at the moment!)

I thought it was a really nice touch for the orthodontist to call. Even the receptionist calling would be nice, but for the orthodontist to take the time out of what I am sure is a busy schedule, well thats just really nice.

First Adjustment

#7 Post by invertigofreak »

Hi guys. I had my first adjustment yesterday. I took pictures before I went and I was SO excited about the massive change that you could see...

At my adjustment, he took off one of the springs because that tooth has turned around enough, and put a spacer on the one on the other side. He said next time I will get a new top wire.

Wow, I can't believe how much your top front tooth has moved down!!

Tooth mousse... what's that? Am I missing something obvious?

thanks allisun - me either. I can't believe how much they have moved in 2 months!

Tooth Mousse... Ummm I am not really sure what it is for. hahahahaha.... I used it once and that was the first day, and since then I have forgotten about it. It says something about fluoride on it.. So I don't know if its just for fluoride or what.

Tomm yeah I noticed that too...

I remember when it went on it was all crooked and now its practically straight! Its amazing.

Seeing some of the photos on here has made me realise that my teeth weren't too bad... But I still wasn't happy with them, and the orthodontist said the overbite is causing my teeth to chip away (which is evident in the shape of the bottoms of my teeth) so I am happy I am doing this finally. Hopefully it will help my confidence :)

I believe that your confidence ultimately has to come from inside but at least you'll be able to show it with a great smile! Looking forward to seeing your progress :)

I agree. But my teeth have held me back. And at least thats one less thing I will have to think about when I want to smile :)

Hi guys! Another update...

My wire kept falling out constantly, and I brought this up with the orthodontist, and he said not to worry about it, it is because the wire is so thin at the moment, and if it happens again to just leave it out (as long as it isn't bothering me).

Now.... I am now free of both those springs I had. YAY! Not a lot of movement, but still some... mainly my rotated tooth has practically done a 90 degree turn and looks like any other tooth. And I now have a gap next to the rotated tooth on the other side.

It was a bit painful, but most of the pain is gone now, and I have been eating fairly normally.

I see from these photos I am going to have to start brushing more and using my tooth mousse as my teeth are starting to go yellow - eek. (although, I ate curry the night before taking this photo).
