Looking forward to smiling for the first time!!

#1 Post by SmileForMe »

Hey, Everyone! I am 23 years old and got my top braces put in on Tuesday (two days ago). I remember when I was about 11-12 my mom took us to the dentist (this is the only time I have ever been to the dentist other than last week when I had a couple of dentist & ortho consults!) and he of course recommended ortho treatment. Being that there were 3 of us and my brother was quite young - the dentist said the others can wait, but "this one needs them right away!" We left the office and my mom said I was getting braces. Cue tantrum. I still to this day do not understand why I was so opposed to getting braces - I needed them and its not like I would have been the only one in school with braces. I pitched such a fit that my mom allowed me to make the decision and so I didn't get the braces. Years passed and then it was too late, my mom could not afford my treatment by the time I came around. Ever since I began working full time after high school I have been wanting braces so bad. There would not be a single day I didn't think about wanting to fix my smile. Oh and speaking of smile, I have never known what that is. When I had my ortho consult and they took my picture the ortho assistant asked me to smile. The picture was so awkward because I simply do not smile with my teeth showing - I have even trained myself to have speak without barely opening my mouth because I hate my teeth so much.

SO, I am finally in a position to have orthodontic treatment and took the plunge two days ago. My plan is track my progress here and share my story and concerns/complaints with you all.

The ortho suggested self-litigating braces and told me she was looking at 18 months, give or take 6 months either way. I'm not expecting anything less than 18 months for sure - but looking around here and just researching online it seems this number is pretty low, especially when compared to people who appeared to have less crowding than I do but yet spent a significant amount of time in braces - not just 18 months. Looking at my pictures below, what are you thoughts about the treatment time?

The only real "before" I have:

All the pictures that follow are day two:

P.S. Even after all the researching, I did not have any idea I would be so miserably sore. My uppers hurt so, so very badly. When will it go away???

Welcome and congrats on getting your braces. I'm not sure about the time they give for treatment, it might depend on the type of braces too??? I'm still not sure how they came up with my treatment time??? As for the soreness....when I first was braced it took about a week and things were pretty close to normal. But then I have days when I'll bite into something and a new tooth is sore. I've only been braced 24 days but it seems like it's going to be a long road of periodic soreness for a while :) At least it will be worth it for all of us :)

Welcome to AW!!

and about the akward picture - I can so relate! my ortho took all these pictures and he said SMILE I was like ummm? lol

and about training yourself to talk with your teeth not showing, yup exact same thing for me...

Now, when I got braces, it is MUCh harder to do than you think so now with my braces I dont even care if people can see because Im fixing my teeth :) and proud of it now if someone wants to say something stupid. They are more than welcome to.

18 months is not bad my estimated treatment time is 18-24 something tells me it will be close to 24 (2 years)
SO I AM HOPING BEFORE MY 24th birthday I can have them off! :) I will turn 24 in 22 months :D

If not, then I'll consider it as a late birthday present :) : ): ):)
Spacers: 8 - 4 top, 4 bottom on 04.04.09
Braced on: 04.09.09
Sentence: 18-24 Months

Thanks for the replies! Everyone keeps telling me the soreness will go away and even today (two days after my post) I'm feeling better. My right side is still really sore and impossible to chew down on that side. The teeth on the right almost feel hollow. But at least the real pain is gone (for now?) because I swear I was thisclose to grabbing my boyfriends pliers from the closet and taking them off. lol!

I'm excited to start seeing movement and I'm really happy I finally got braced :)

Welcome! :D

Congrats on getting braces, your braces look super good! I know exactly how you feel when you say you made yourself talk/smile without showing your teeth...I did that too. Once you start seeing progress you won't be able to stop smiling!

In love with Wax!

Hey all!
So I'm a week and a day into treatment now and i'm feeling a lot better. The soreness was so bad initially I really wanted to take some pliers to my teeth. Then of course I feel like a baby because I think of all the kids that are braced and they seem to deal just fine so why can't I?

I felt really uncomfortable and self conscious the first couple of days but after reading around other posts and also the replies I got I finally came around. I realized I'm doing something positive for myself and yeah, maybe its a little later than expected, but at least I'm doing it. I'm really excited to start seeing progress and I'm so inspired by other members' posts. I think it definitely helps that everyone is very supportive of my treatment and they have been really encouraging.

Not only am I getting a good smile out of this but I'm also losing weight. I did read around here that some people were excited to have that "side affect". I think I'm just so aware of my teeth now and I really don't feel like brushing 24/7 so I end up avoiding all the snacking and unnecessary meals that ordinarily I would only eat because I was bored anyway! I've started eating healthier foods and might even start working out...

Wax is my BFF. I didn't think I'd need it but after a sore developed on the right side of my cheek I realized I didn't have a choice. It does feel a little weird and "full" in there but its better than having my cheek get lodged in the brackets.

Another really great thing that has come out of this - not sure if previously mentioned - but, my co-worker and very good friend has decided to start treatment as well. We're both kind of on this self improvement kick now and after I got braced he couldn't help himself and made a call to my dentist and ortho on the very same afternoon. His consultations are coming up in about two weeks and I'm super excited. We're both eating better so the mutual support is very motivating. It'll be nice when he gets his braces because it'll be daily encouragement!

I'm thinking I'll post about every month with new pix and might just stop by in between if I have anything exciting to say or any updates.

Thanks for reading :)

Congrats!! I had my b-day today, and I'm supposed to have about 18 months treatment time, too! So we'll be on the path together!

No soreness yet for me, but I took tylenol before my appointment and just took my second dose (4.5 hours later) so maybe that's helping. Hard to tell.

Best of luck, though, I'm really excited to see your progress!! Glad your pain is letting up..

Congrats on being braced! :) I got braced Tuesday of this week and I'm still experiencing some soreness but all in all it's not too bad. Hopefully the soreness has subsided and you're bad to eating somewhat normally :) Can't wait to see some progress pics.

Congrats on getting braced Sam & Pixie. Right after getting braced I thought - oh this isn't so bad at all! Yeah RIGHT! Until the next day when the pain kicked in. I was just really really sore. But everyone says it only lasts about a week and that was right on for me. I almost forget I have them until I eat!

Hey Smile,

I'm so jealous that you have a friend starting treatment with you - that must be so encouraging!

Congrats on getting started! :)

Yeah it's really great because we're friends (co-workers) so I get to see him everyday and we will be able to follow our progress day by day. His consult is this Friday so if he goes through with it he could be braced before my first adjustment on May 26th!! I'm happy I motivated him to at least get a consult and I do hope he goes through with treatment so I can have someone to cry to when my teeth hurt!
