Im so glad I found this website, I am naturally curious and worried about whether or not what Im going through is normal.

For as long as I could remember I have always wanted braces. With good reason my teeth weren’t straight, because of it I refused to show my teeth when I smiled in a lot of situations and on numerous occasions it had refrained me from meeting new people and doing new things. My parents only got as close as the orthodontic consult when I was in jr high, but the Dr. scared them off when he informed them of how much it would cost. I don’t blame them though... it is pretty pricey.

So now here I am, 28 yrs old. And I did it!!! enough was enough. My boyfriend thought I was out of my mind to get braces at this age, he thinks I look beautiful. (I don’t think he’s realized I didn’t like smiling in any of our pictures together)

Because my parents never took me to the dentist I had naturally to go through a HUGE process before I got them on. My teeth had to be cleaned, than I learned they needed to be scaled. Than all my wisdom teeth had to be removed. Went bak to the dentist who said I had my first cavity which had to be filled, than went to the orthodontist who said I need to have my 4 premolars pulled oh my!!! So much running back and forth and to and fro appointments.

I finally got them on!!!! The process didn’t hurt at all, and to be honest from the day they went on to now I haven’t been in very much pain at all, I have been able to eat as long as it was cut up small so I don’t know what I was soooo scared about! LOL maybe Im one of the lucky ones or I spoke to soon. Hahaha.

oh and my 2nd day in braces my boyfriend of 2 years had proposed to me!! And I accepted! I am sooo thrilled to have straight teeth for our wedding day in the near future.

I included my pics before braces and my 4th day in. My initial evaluation stated I had a deep over jet, upper and lower crowding, upper and lower teeth tipped outward, small upper jaw frame, estimated 24 months in braces. I went with metal brackets. At the time I didn’t care what olor they were as long as they were on. :o) and happy to report I <3 them!

Congrats on getting braces! Isn't it so nice to know that we're on our way to being confident about our teeth! I have crooked teeth with big gaps in the front and crowding on the bottom, and I completely understand when you say you were embarrassed to smile in pictures and such - me too! I'm so happy that someday I WILL have gorgeous teeth!

Your teeth will look fantastic, they are nicely shaped. Looking forward to seeing your progress throughout this!

I cheat and eat popcorn all the time but I have popped out wires because of it. I do spend lots of time brushing and flossing after I finished eating popcorn. I also am very careful not to bite on the kernals. Congrats on your engagement and have fun at Harry Potter!

I sooooo wanted to have popcorn at Harry Potter yesterday too (LOVE the books!!), but I didn't. I've been thinking about cheating with popcorn lately because my manager, who I share an office with, is alllways popping it and it smells soooo good. But now after reading that someone popped a wire out because of it, I'm rethinking it!! I didn't think that would happen with popcorn! Perhaps that is the reason that it's such a no-no.

I definitely hear you on the popcorn thing! One of the summer students in my lab made some this afternoon and it drove me crazy. I'm tempted to make some and just let the starchy part dissolve in my mouth then spit out whatever hull is left. It definitely won't be a pretty sight (best to do this at home I think), but at least I'll be able to taste it lol.

Congrats!

Your bottom teeth look a lot like mine did when I first started out! It's a wonderful thing to have done for yourself...and your self confidence on your wedding day will be thru the roof! Imagine how much you'll be smiling for all those pics :)

first tightening

I had my first tightening yesterday morning. I decided to go with teal bands this time since the pearl bands i had on my first fitting looked like they were getting discolored by the 2nd month! Life with braces wasnt as hard as i thought it would be and by the 2nd month i forgot at times that i even had them!

My first fitting the ortho decided it was time to start trying to close the gap. So my wire is thicker and I have chains now. Looking back at my first pictures I realize now that my top teeth look as if they are moving!!! I am soooooo happy!!! the pain is worth it!

oh and i also got my engagement pictures taken on rehoboth beach in delaware. although i am happy to be getting the pictures taken, i told my friend who was also our professional photographer that if he took a picture of me with any of my gaps showing i would murder him. LOL Although there were lots of photos taken with my gap showing there were plenty that were taken minus the gaps that looked awesome! sooooo i cant wait to get the pictures back so i can send them out. thank goodness i had them before my first adjustment. i don't know how teal braces would look in engagement pictures lol.

and now back to a week of eating soft foods and worry about why my back molars feel like they are about to fall right out!! hahahaha
