letigrelady's braces journey - 6 month smile...hopefully!

#1 Post by letigrelady »

Day 1

Had my braces fitted at 4.30pm - about 4 hours ago. I have to say its better than I thought and worse than I thought - all rolled into one.

The dentist gave me some swanky goggles that played a DVD when you put them on - I watched the Pursuit of Happyness - quite apt title really- I didnt think this at the time - I just knew it was a film my boyfriend would never want to watch! however, I could not tell you anything about the film, my mind was drifting through 'what am I doing?' and 'Dont cry!'

I did however cry - when I went in and when I saw my braces - not because it hurt but because this is what I have been waiting for - well the end results anyway - and now it feels like it might actually happen - one day I might actually have straight teeth. Of course, I am a complete cynic and am convinced it wont work for me! ( please do braces!)

So the things that feel most bizzare - the bite bumpers - soup was manageable but the chunks of mushroom were not going to be ground any smaller by my teeth tonight - eek.. I hope I am able to chew! Just had to pop to the shop to buy all their soft food - mainly yoghurt!

Anyway - I feel like a cross between Ugly Betty, a 14yr old school girl and Jaws from the Bond film!! ha.

It';s strange to think this thing will be in my mouth for six months - but I am lucky that it is six months - so I have to think of that.
I keep trying to pull my top lip back down over the braces as I feel like my mouth sticks out a mile! really cant wait to see some movement and post some images - will post some photos this weekend if i can figure out how to do it.

So I'm a teacher in a secondary school and have to face my year 10 form tomorrow morning - They will notice - its discreet ish but most definitely there...and then another yr 10, yr 7, yr 9 and yr 8....should be an interesting day... I wonder what they'll say? I wonder if my newly formed lisp will be temporary...

Such a mix of emotions right now... If anyone is interested in my story, I'll try and post regular updates...

So excited about any movement - fingers crossed I get what I have waited so long for...

Congratulations on getting your braces!! Those goggles sound fancy, I have to admit I'm a bit jealous 8)

I'm sure you'll get used to your braces in a couple of weeks, and the lisp should clear up.

Keep us posted :)

First day at school/work

I'm up early today so thought I'd give a quick update...

School was interesting - all of the staff said they never realised my teeth weren't straight ( so I'm thinking - why am I having this done!? Then I remember...for me!)

My form yr 10 were lovely - they gave me some tips - don't eat apples... eat ice cream! haha. I told all of my classes at the start of the lesson - all were great - all were very interested and impressed that the brace is hopefully only on for six months.

One kid said ' what have you got in your mouth?'
I said ' I'll tell you in a minute'
He said ' Can I have some?'
I said ' well if you want a brace...'

I think he thought I was indulging in s quick piece of chewing gum and tring to conceal it in my upper lip!

Another boy went ' Show me'

I replied ' Why would I show you he inside of my mouth?!' He was suitably embarrased - so that put him in his place!

All of the kids were lovely and asking questions, telling me it would get better and to give it about a week or so.

The one thing thats so strange is the bite bumpers - I can't chew as my teeth dont meet - im living on soup, yoghurt, mash potato and soft fish.
Longing for a bar of chocolate and a glass of red wine! Still its going to be a good diet.

Anyone know how long bit bumpers are on for? is it about a month?

The brace still feels massive at times - but as im typing this im forgetting about it momentarily which is wonderful. My teeth ache alot and my gums are starting to get sore - especially after a day of talking in lessons.

Im proud of myself for doing this - Im a pretty self conscious person, I think if the kids hadn;t been so great I wouldn't have been able to do it. Four more days worth of classes to tell, then I'm a week into braces and they'll all know - and I can relax a bit more.

Can't wait to see some/ any sort of movement.... I'm so impatient!

Keeping my eyes on the prize so to speak! Straight teeth by next summer! :)
